There is a man painting my kitchen right now and I hate it :(

I have the decorators in.

I picked out a nice pale green to go well with my oak units. But the green's not pale, it's fucking vivid. And now it's all over my walls and I want to cry.

It's ruined my lovely new very expensive kitchen. It looks cheap and nasty.

I can't return the paint because it's one of those companies that makes it up for you so it's not off the shelf.

I want to cry. I hate my life.

I've wasted loads of money because it need re-doing again, immediately Sad

Yes Johnsons paint looks completely different when dry.

SuchHysteria · 28/02/2017 11:10

What colour is it?

Can you repaint it yourself?

VaginaSuprise · 28/02/2017 11:13

Take a deep breath. It can be sorted. Tell the decorator you don't like it and not to give it another coat. Are you paying him by the hour or the job? Rebook him to come another time. Go to B&Q, get them to mix you some tester pots of Valspar and start again.

Floggingmolly · 28/02/2017 11:14

Mix some white through it.

Bluntness100 · 28/02/2017 11:14

Often thy dry very different to the wet color. In addition you may find it's just the change that's throwing you and in a couple of days you might actually love it. I'd let him finish and just give it some time.

AshesandDust · 28/02/2017 11:15

Ask him to add some white paint to tone it down - it can't make it any worse.

Lweji · 28/02/2017 11:16

If it's too vivid, could the decorator buy some white paint and mix it?
And you could keep the rest for retouches, or even try to sell it on.

blueskyinmarch · 28/02/2017 11:16

It will probably look different once it has dried. If you can manage to get a picture we can give you our group verdict on it? If you really hate it then stop him after he has done the first coat and as him to reschedule for another time once you have bought new paint. If you can’t do this or afford it right now then you need to suck it up and re paint it in a few months time. You might grow to like it!

HouseOfGoldandBones · 28/02/2017 11:18

OP, I'm sure it'll be a problem with the paint. I had Johnstones make up a colour for me, which was supposed to be slate grey, and it was only when the painter commented that it was a lovely green that I got suspicious.

He stopped at one coat & used it as the undercoat, and I just bit the bullet & got it done by Crown & re-booked him, because I knew I would hate the room every time I walked in it.

Bluntness100 · 28/02/2017 11:21

I'd caution against adding white. I did it once and where as we stood for ages mixing it and shaking it, and it looked 100 percent thoroughly mised, the reality was once dry we saw little white streaks all over the walls. Had to re do the bloody thing.

AprilLudgateDwyer · 28/02/2017 11:22

Oh god I had this and turned out the paint people had sent me the wrong paint! Tell th decorator and see what he thinks!

TheRealCurlySue · 28/02/2017 11:22

I'm sure you aren't the first person to do this and won't be the last, we once painted a room three different colours before we liked it!

SleepFreeZone · 28/02/2017 11:24

I bet you once it's dried and accessorised you can make it look fab. Paint is always scary as it's going up.

Vermillioncomfyshoes · 28/02/2017 11:24

It will look much paler when it dries, and when you get a bit more used to it.

Robinkitty · 28/02/2017 11:28

I had similar when we replaced our carpets, it looked a lovely silvery grey in the shop I was really looking forward to it being put down.
Came back home whilst they were half way through and it was vile, it looked like the underlay. I'm still not convinced it wasnt a different carpet. We couldn't afford to replace it so it's still down 5 years later, it's grown on me - a bit.

Vegansnake · 28/02/2017 11:29

Nip to homebas, get new paint a lighter colour to go over the top of the one you have

RightyWho · 28/02/2017 11:29

The colour's the right one, it matches the colour chart. The first coat's dry and looks shit.

I've just had a word and he's buzzed off to Johnstone's to get another batch for me made up to a F&B colour that I like.

Here's hoping for more success with this colour. I'll post pictures in a sec.

Sorry for the epic panic!

That's good. At least he listened to you and has agreed to get more paint. Hopefully you will like this colour. What F&B colour have you gone for?

ShowMeYourWellies · 28/02/2017 11:34

Definitely tell them to stop now

RightyWho · 28/02/2017 11:34

I've gone for Tunsgate Green. Subtle (I hope!)

ArseyTussle · 28/02/2017 11:35

Ooh, what F&B colour did you pick? And what colour are your units? I love a paint thread!

suzyrut · 28/02/2017 11:36

No advice as everyone upthread has it right I think about telling him to stop now, but you have my sympathy. It's so exciting when you think you're getting to the end of a project and see paint finally going on the walls, the dissapointment is awful if you think you got it wrong. I had a similar feeling with tiles in my last kitchen. I kept them in the end and got used to them (they were bloody expensive marble from fired earth so I had to really). At least paint is easier to replace.

One of my best friends is a decorator and she has this frequently so don't worry, it's all in a days work.

TheAntiBoop · 28/02/2017 11:38

The paint charts are rubbish - I ended up with 10 samples on the wall before I found the right one - the cards made the colours look slightly different but on the wall they were massively different

Good luck!!

suzyrut · 28/02/2017 11:38

Ooh just seen your update. What direction is your room facing? That looks like it has quite a lot of yellow in it which might come our if it's a very sunny spot?

wobblywonderwoman · 28/02/2017 11:42

Good you're getting it sorted op.
