Is my sitting room "old"? (I'm only 29!) PICTURE

NC for this.

Advice please... a friend of mine was over the other day and said my sitting room looked "old lady" Confused

I'm only 29! The curtains are crushed velvet which I understand to be very en vouge and grey walls which I thought were fashionable too?!

The furniture is expensive so don't want to get rid of it to fit the room to a tee.

It's lovely. Can we swap please?

HmmOkay · 11/02/2017 12:54

Springer, I mean like this kind of thing. Two curtains both pushed all the way back to the wall.

So the material does not obscure the glass at all.

It's like my parents house, they are in their 80s. Sorry.

jujubeanz · 11/02/2017 12:55

Yeah the curtains are too much imo, even without the tie backs, makes it look a bit like a hotel.

jujubeanz · 11/02/2017 12:56

Or (I'm whispering this bit)..a bit like an old people's home...Blush

doubleshotespresso · 11/02/2017 12:56

I really like it OP. Question is do you like it?

Surely thats all that should matter?

PunjanaTea · 11/02/2017 12:57

Don't comment that the friends flat looks a bit but to let, you may as well just say 'I'm much richer than you' if you want to sound like that much of a twat.

Your living room isn't to my taste but it's fine as it is.

diddl · 11/02/2017 12:58

If you don't like the throw then that would be cheap & easy to replace-but although I don't like it as a throw, I'd keep it folded somewhere to use as a blanket!Grin

Pigeonpost · 11/02/2017 13:00

Much better without the tie backs. I've never seen crushed velvet curtains before and think they are a bit ageing. I'd probably go for something lighter in colour with a modern print, maybe a bit Scandi to go with your grey walls. Your friend is just bloody rude though.

MrsSiba · 11/02/2017 13:01

I like the room. Agree it shows a sophisticated taste but what's wrong with that? You are very lucky to have such gorgeous Windows and personally I love fresh flowers. I have a 23 month old and a lively cat so don't buy them any more.

Oblomov17 · 11/02/2017 13:02

I think it's the curtains and tie backs. Change those and it will look lovely.

daisypond · 11/02/2017 13:03

We hang our curtains like the OP's - without the tie-backs - so six curtains, as there are three windows. Our windows reach all the way to the side walls, so if you draw the curtains to the edges it blocks out half the windows/light. When open, the curtains hang between the windows, so they block out less light. I think it's a great look, much better than drawing them to the edges.

mrsBeverleygoldberg · 11/02/2017 13:03

I love it, especially the velvet curtains. Although I don't like the tie backs. I did that in the noughties and late nineties.
I'm 43, so old...

Serialweightwatcher · 11/02/2017 13:05

There are no rules - whatever you like in your house should be enough - your friend is just rude!

viques · 11/02/2017 13:07

Absolutely fine as it is, if you wanted to update a bit you could dress the sofas with some cushions ( tkmaxx often have lovely ones) and maybe have a brighter rug, but other than that no need to change anything.

I am having window envy for your floor to ceiling windows, windows like that can take statement curtains in their stride so leave them alone!

20nil · 11/02/2017 13:08

TVs on walls are just awful. I'd go for shutters in that room. They will bring out the best in your beautiful windows.

HeyRoly · 11/02/2017 13:09

Ugh, forget the nitpicking about velvet and tie backs. It looks palatial compared with my small and grotty living room, strewn with toys and covered with shitty laminate.

MrsPeelyWaly · 11/02/2017 13:10

Your room is lovely OP and taking the tiebacks away just added a wee bit more loveliness to the room.

WhatchaMaCalllit · 11/02/2017 13:11

I think your living room looks comfortable, homely and warm and inviting. I don't think I'm an old lady (far from it). I'm not a fan of curtain tie backs though - how about having wrought iron curtain holders on the walls instead or is that too 'old lady' too?

Parmaviolets13 · 11/02/2017 13:11

I like it. If I had a house (that I can see!) like that at 29 id be very proud

HappyFlappy · 11/02/2017 13:12

It's LOVELY!

Yes - maybe it looks as though it belongs to an older person, but I think that the is because the stuff looks quality and nor like it came from IKEA (My house of full of IKEA BTW, as I am poor . . . )

If you like it, forget what your friend said. It's very stylish.

talkingtoclarry · 11/02/2017 13:12

I think it's lovely OP! Though I do hate many of the so called modern decorating trends - statement wallpaper on one wall, big fuck off tellys on the chimney breast, etc.

HappyFlappy · 11/02/2017 13:12

(PLEASE don't say it's all from iKEA. . . . )

sunshinesupermum · 11/02/2017 13:13

It looks lovely, your friend is being an arse. Her magnolia walls and brown leather sofa are so last century ;-)

SpringSpringSpring · 11/02/2017 13:15

Sounds rude of your friend but then you were as bad about her furniture.

It's the kind of room that could easily belong to someone much older because it's a classic style. I think it also looks older because most people your age can't afford that kind of look.

I absolutely love the windows and floor though.
