Is my sitting room "old"? (I'm only 29!) PICTURE

NC for this.

Advice please... a friend of mine was over the other day and said my sitting room looked "old lady" Confused

I'm only 29! The curtains are crushed velvet which I understand to be very en vouge and grey walls which I thought were fashionable too?!

The furniture is expensive so don't want to get rid of it to fit the room to a tee.

I agree that it's a nice room but changing how the curtains hang would significantly change how it feels. I would remove the tie backs and try to have the curtains hanging vertically when open.

She did Chic. Yesterday. There is a photo and everything.

Why don't people at least read the OP's updates if they CBA to read the full thread?

Bangs head against a brick wall.

Purplebluebird · 12/02/2017 08:39

I really don't like the tv stand, and I think different curtains would be better. It does look a bit older than 29, but I think the overall look with the rest of the room is lovely :)

SoupDragon · 12/02/2017 08:42

Basically, all this thread proves is a true everyone has different taste in home furnishings and that you should just go with what you like because you aren't going to please everyone! :o

chicaguapa · 12/02/2017 08:46

Thanks savoy I've seen that now. I didn't notice there were 11 pages to a thread about curtains. Grin Looks much better.

Iam I hope your head's ok. It's probably not worth getting so worked up about though. Hmm I expect even the OP has moved on now.

nc10 · 12/02/2017 08:52

Thanks everyone. Cushions have been rearranged - my cleaner does them stacked up against each other so I follow her lead but I've changed them now to 'normal' arrangements. Might go buy some colourful ones as PP have suggested.

And for those asking about why there's no mess from DC (bits of lego on the floor etc), there's a separate playroom elsewhere in the house (I'm pregnant with existing DSC) and that room is a bombsite! Grin

My tv unit in the alcoves that I mentioned. It would be lovely instead of your glass one. Excuse the clutter!

Why do you have a pile of cushions on one settee?

It looks staged so, I suppose, unrelaxed/Next catalogue-like. Maybe that makes it look more traditional?

Itsmytemporaryname · 12/02/2017 21:14

Moving the right hand sofa away from the wall and both sofas slightly over the rug would make it more contemporary... If that's what you want.

I like it, it looks lovely. Wish I had windows like that.

echt · 13/02/2017 08:25

Lovely windows and so much better without tie-backs.
Telly oddly angled.

The coffee table/block thing would be better if replaced by something with legs. Seeing more, even carpet, makes a room look bigger.

parking2017 · 13/02/2017 09:51

Im 31 and I love it.

I would fill our house with crushed velvet if DP was accepting of it.

He's a designer though and loves all things mid century so we have a bit more scandi/minimal vibe going on.

Your's looks luxurious and comfy

diddl · 13/02/2017 13:13

" Might go buy some colourful ones as PP have suggested. "

Don't forget a throw!

I know I said that I didn't like the curtains or the throw-which obviously doesn't matter as it's not my room, I do agree with pps that it's lovely overall.

Our sitting room is just a hotchpotch of stuff we like which doesn't match!

Cream self patterened sofa, dull orange sofa with a matching footstool that it always in front of the cream sofa, gold Cintique chair...

lottieandmia · 13/02/2017 13:15

I think it's a beautiful room. Your friend is probably jealous.

Dowser · 13/02/2017 17:56

So much better with the curtains pushed back. They now open up the windows and with the tie backs gone looks lovely and modern
