Is my sitting room "old"? (I'm only 29!) PICTURE

NC for this.

Advice please... a friend of mine was over the other day and said my sitting room looked "old lady" Confused

I'm only 29! The curtains are crushed velvet which I understand to be very en vouge and grey walls which I thought were fashionable too?!

The furniture is expensive so don't want to get rid of it to fit the room to a tee.

(I don't like the TV stand particularly, but overall the room is lively)

Somehowsomewhere · 11/02/2017 12:29

Lovely!

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 11/02/2017 12:30

I think it looks much better without the tie backs.

I didn't realise TV stands were out, what on earth am I supposed to I'd with the TV, Sky box, router and blu ray player? Also, what's wrong with brown leather sofas? We replaced our cream one with a chocolate brown one last year and I love it!

Knittedfrog · 11/02/2017 12:30

I love it. It's got style and class.

NameChanger22 · 11/02/2017 12:30

Beautiful windows, beautiful view. Light, plain curtains would brighten the room. I would also paint the room a much lighter colour.

Iamastonished · 11/02/2017 12:34

Yes, where do people put their TV accessories without a TV stand?

"because you actually have a better spinal shape for some sofas than looking down to to, should be sitting up looking straight ahead"

We look straight ahead to watch the TV from our sofa. We would have to look up if the TV was on the wall. We can also move the TV round if we have visitors so that everyone can the the TV from both sofas.

Fantasticmissfoxy · 11/02/2017 12:35

The tv on a glass stand and tie backs are a bit 'middle aged' - but if you like it then it doesn't matter a jot. Your home should be whatever makes you comfortable and happy

Notso · 11/02/2017 12:37

Curtains look better without tie backs but there's still too many of them and the cushion stack is odd.
I think the room looks like a picture from the Next catalogue, it's a bit impersonal and colours are all samey. It's nice enough and perhaps you have hidden stuff for privacy reasons.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 11/02/2017 12:37

It wouldn't work to have it on the wall in our living room as we've got a corner sofa (waiting to be told that's old fashioned!) so anyone sitting in two of the seats wouldn't see the tv.

honeyroar · 11/02/2017 12:40

I like it, especially without the tie backs.

As someone said, when you're young you don't often have the quality furnishings you have when you're older, and you do some dodgy experiments with "trendy" colours, resulting in strange looking, or cheap looking rooms.

tovelitime · 11/02/2017 12:41

I think it's beautiful and elegant, you've lovely taste. Ignore her

Somehowsomewhere · 11/02/2017 12:42

I didn't realise TV stands were out, what on earth am I supposed to I'd with the TV, Sky box, router and blu ray player?

We had an oak one made by a local furniture maker. All the TV accessories are hidden away. I don't like glass ones, but that's just personal preference. Don't know if they're 'out', I just don't like them!

MikeUniformMike · 11/02/2017 12:42

Much better without the tiebacks. The room looks very stylish. I would not expect it to be a 29yr old's but that's because it looks expensive and sophisticated.

BerylStreep · 11/02/2017 12:43

I agree the curtains look better without the tie-backs. To replace them would cost a lot of money.

I quite like the colours in the room. Can you take a picture from another angle?

Change your friend instead of the decor?

ijustwannadance · 11/02/2017 12:43

Those windows are stunning.
I have no issue with the curtains, but for me there is no colour in the room. I'd get rid of the old throw and get some nice brighter coloured cushions and accessories.

Cheesymonster · 11/02/2017 12:44

We have the same TV stand

tovelitime · 11/02/2017 12:44

I prefer it with the tie backs tbh

Not sure about the TV- if I'm being picky- but your home is elegant and v pleasant, OP. And looks untouched by kids or animals, which I personally appreciate- no bit of brightly coloured shite and lego etc everywhere!

GinIsIn · 11/02/2017 12:46

If you like it, that's what counts. Honestly, I think the combo of the crushed velvet curtains and the slightly clinical tidiness make it look a little bit like a branch of DFS.

The reason I think this might make you seem older because is doesn't seem lived in - a throwback to the days when people had a second 'lounge' that they kept 'for best'.

Megatherium · 11/02/2017 12:49

I think you need to brighten up the furniture. Can you swap the throw for something more colourful, and get some bright coloured cushions?

ScarlettDarling · 11/02/2017 12:50

op your room is lovely. Again, the only thing I'd change is the curtains...was going to suggest binning the tie backs, but I can see you've done that and it looks so much better. I'd also prob consider getting rid of the curtains on your lovely French doors altogether. It would less busy and let in more light if you only had the two sets on the windows.

Lovely room though.

thatone · 11/02/2017 12:50

It's a lovely room and the look is very elegant. It does look like on the more traditional side - maybe that is what she meant, was still rude though - but I would not say 'old'.

From your title I was expecting doilies and decorative plates.

AwaywiththePixies27 · 11/02/2017 12:53

Tell your friend to shut up it's not her concern. She's not the one living in it - you are and if you like it nothing else matters. Whether it looks old or not.

I'd never be so rude to point out someone's decor, I go to my friends to see them not to comment on their interior designing skills.

ChunderDragon · 11/02/2017 12:53

I think it looks understated and classic. Definitely sour grapes! (26 years old)
