Is my sitting room "old"? (I'm only 29!) PICTURE

NC for this.

Advice please... a friend of mine was over the other day and said my sitting room looked "old lady" Confused

I'm only 29! The curtains are crushed velvet which I understand to be very en vouge and grey walls which I thought were fashionable too?!

The furniture is expensive so don't want to get rid of it to fit the room to a tee.

Actually, I would not have the curtains like that, you are wasting your lovely windows by having them half covered.

FabulouslyGlamourousFerret · 11/02/2017 11:17

I think the curtains look 'chintzy' on the small MN app photo but they're actually crushed velvet and rather lovely imo :)

Ohyesiam · 11/02/2017 11:17

I think it's the curtains. Blinds would give a more modern look.
But it's your room, if you are happy, stick with it.

Cherryskypie · 11/02/2017 11:18

It's a lovely room. It is very grown up.

user1484830599 · 11/02/2017 11:19

That is very rude! Is she jealous, perchance?

I think it looks very elegant, it is a lovely room. And anyway, who cares so long as you like it!

Cocolepew · 11/02/2017 11:19

Looks lovely, very elegant. You can't take the curtains down in winter Confused they are to keep the heat in. I presume you pull them?

As long as you like it that's all that matters.

SoupDragon · 11/02/2017 11:19

Am I looking st a different picture to everyone else's because I'm seeing plain crushed velvet curtains, not floral or chintzy ones. The OP even says they're crushed velvet.

I think that people who comment about a room seeming "old" are probably sheep who slavishly follow trends. If you love it and are happy in it, who cares?

Iloveneighbours · 11/02/2017 11:19

I like it but I'm almost half a decade old. Shock

You're almost 5? ConfusedGrin

daisypond · 11/02/2017 11:19

The curtains aren't floral or chintzy. They're plain crushed velvet, it looks like. I think the room is lovely. The tie-backs are the only thing that perhaps make it look a little "old" - or maybe they're coming back into fashion?
I'd let the curtains just hang straight.

Spam88 · 11/02/2017 11:20

I think it's just the curtains that make it look a bit older, possibly even just the tie backs, everything else in the room looks very modern. I'm not a fan of curtains in general though, we don't have any in our house.

I LOVE your windows.

Ahardmanisgoodtofind · 11/02/2017 11:20

I'm a bit jealous looks lovely, although I agree with pp,the tie backs are the only thing I'd change. I'm 31 fwiw

OhTheRoses · 11/02/2017 11:21

I can't get the picture but you should have what you like not what fashion dictates.

My gardener said what I was planning to plant in the front garden (herbaceous genre) was "old lady". The house was built in the 1920s and is very quaint and quirky - two front doors quirky) and geometrically clipped euonymous (sp) wasn't going to do it.

I think Alan Clark said of Michael Heseltine that he was vulgar and a parvenu for having to buy his own furniture. I know who had the greater natural style.

ssd · 11/02/2017 11:21

I think its gorgeous, you have lovely taste

your friend is jealous and so am I!

Hulababy · 11/02/2017 11:21

It looks classic and elegant. More traditional than ultra modern but that's not a bad hing. It looks like a grown up, well put together room. What's more / if you like your room then keep it as it is. Ignore other people!

ohtheholidays · 11/02/2017 11:22

It is Gorgeous! and your friend doesn't sound very nice,I wonder if it's a case of the green eyed monster?!

MycatsaPirate · 11/02/2017 11:22

I love it (although I am 48). I think it's classy and understated.

Don't change it because someone else doesn't like it.

You live in it, not them.

MrsGsnow18 · 11/02/2017 11:23

Ignore her. It's your home so if you like it then that's all that really matters. Everyone has different taste. It seems rude to me that she would even say that to you!

tiredofhavingtothinkofnewnames · 11/02/2017 11:23

I think it is the matching tie backs- very 1980s. Get some different tie backs

Iamastonished · 11/02/2017 11:24

What is everyone's issue with tie backs?

Your living room looks far more stylish and put together than mine. Ignore the fashion sheep and naysayers. IMO a home should be welcoming and comfortable, not a fashion statement.

Olympiathequeen · 11/02/2017 11:27

Certainly not old ladyish but very classic and possibly a little boring?

Could do with a little fun added, but if this is your style then it's it's fine. can't stand those paper stags heads anyway

Eevee77 · 11/02/2017 11:27

It's the curtains.
I like it, it's to my taste and I'm a similar age to you. It I'd change the curtains.

Peregrina · 11/02/2017 11:28

No, old would be a flowery carpet in loud colours, stripy beige wallpaper with the stripes made up of flowers, a gas fire, and a big mirror over the said fire.

nc10 · 11/02/2017 11:28

Changed the curtains! Think it looks more modern now Smile

Thanks for everyone's opinions. I'd love to get new furniture but DP says no.

Sorry pictures are so dark - cloudy and snowing outside.

It's only the curtains that look a bit old-fashioned and what does it matter if you like them? We have an old-fashioned high back sofa exactly like my granny's old one because it's really comfortable.

Floggingmolly · 11/02/2017 11:29

It looks like a period room in what I presume is a period house? It's lovely, far nicer than the usual minimalist, paint everything white (or grey!) that's everywhere these days. They all look unfinished.
