Is my sitting room "old"? (I'm only 29!) PICTURE

NC for this.

Advice please... a friend of mine was over the other day and said my sitting room looked "old lady" Confused

I'm only 29! The curtains are crushed velvet which I understand to be very en vouge and grey walls which I thought were fashionable too?!

The furniture is expensive so don't want to get rid of it to fit the room to a tee.

You seem to only care about what others think about your room...

  • you say that the curtains are 'en vogue'
  • the walls are 'fashionable'
  • you are bothered by what your friend says
  • you are asking us on here.

What do you like?

acornsandnuts · 11/02/2017 11:54

It's lovely and a big improvement without the tie backs.

diddl · 11/02/2017 11:54

I'm in my 50's & the curtains look old fashioned to me-because I'm old enough to remember them first time around.

Like when flares came around again!Grin

PerryCoxHair · 11/02/2017 11:55

I think it looks much better without the curtain tie backs. I would see what it looks like if you push the middle curtains out to the side to open up the window and bring some more light in.
I think you have a lovely lounge and your friend is probably jealous!

pinkyredrose · 11/02/2017 11:58

I've just noticed your cushions all standing lined up like soldiers! Grin

Iamastonished · 11/02/2017 11:59

Toddles off to remove tie backs from my curtains.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 11/02/2017 11:59

I think it's gorgeous. I would pay no attention to your so called friend. It's your room and if you and your DP like it as it is that's all that matters. It won't date.

All the people saying they'd get rid of the curtains - what about privacy after dark, and draughtproofing? If those huge windows aren't double or secondary glazed, thick lined curtains are a big help with keeping a room warm in winter.

Also notable that people have different ideas about what's 'old lady' style depending on our own ages and backgrounds. I'm 55. It's unpalatable but true that my taste is probably 'old lady' to someone in their 20s. Shock Grin

RobotLover68 · 11/02/2017 12:00

IMO the room looks timeless

I'm not being goady either, but I don't agree - we all have different tastes and the OP asked. I said sorry as I didn't want to be mean.

Doesn't mean I'm right and she's wrong or your wrong - just different.

Botanicbaby · 11/02/2017 12:01

It looks exactly like my 48 year old friend's sitting room from the colour scheme, the curtains, the flower vase and the TV stand. HTH.

Agree with others, why do you even care what other people think? What a horrible comment from your so-called friend Confused

CiderwithBuda · 11/02/2017 12:01

We all like different things. Different styles. The world would be bloody boring if we all liked the same stuff. Some people have no filter and just make a critical comment. But it's based on THEIR taste.

I think your room looks nice. Elegant and fairly classic. I agree the curtains look better without the tie backs.

Trethew · 11/02/2017 12:01

See what it looks like without the tie-backs

Feelthesame2 · 11/02/2017 12:01

The windows themselves are a lovely feature and the curtains definitely look better without the tiebacks. It may just be the photo, but everything still looks rather dark. I think a few splashes of colour would help lift it (not that I know anything, lol).

JustSpeakSense · 11/02/2017 12:02

I think it's gorgeous.

I think without the tie backs is even better.

SoupDragon · 11/02/2017 12:02

And where would we put the sound bar, PVR, DVD player and Freesat box without a TV stand?

Mine is on a vintage (1930's perhaps so appropriate for the house) dressing table.

MsJamieFraser · 11/02/2017 12:02

I think its lovely, however personally I would changed the TV stand.

TheNaze73 · 11/02/2017 12:03

You've taken years off of the feel by losing the curtain ties. Smile

If I'm honest, if I had to age the owner I'd say mid 50's however, that's not necessarily a bad thing, as I do like it

Feelthesame2 · 11/02/2017 12:04

If you hadn't asked for an opinion I would never comment though, and I think your friend was tactless to do so, unless you specifically asked for her opinion.

YouWillNotSeeMe · 11/02/2017 12:04

Better with the curtains in second photo.
I do like the to stand as don't like the metal/glass look, but that's personal opinion and I like to on walls because you actually have a better spinal shape for some sofas than looking down to to, should be sitting up looking straight ahead

pinkhousesarebest · 11/02/2017 12:04

Never mind the tie-backs, I would lose the friend. How rude.

RobotLover68 · 11/02/2017 12:05

I was struggling to define it, I think what it is, the whole room looks "heavy"

SoupDragon · 11/02/2017 12:05

friend lives in a flat with magnolia walls and gross brown leather sofas. Will comment on hers next time I'm there!

" it looks a bit 'buy-to-let'..."

boredwithabrokenfinger · 11/02/2017 12:06

I like it. It looks classic.

Who cares what she thinks? She sounds very rude.

user1485102013 · 11/02/2017 12:06

Do you have dcs? If so where is all the mess? I think it looks lovely. I'm 27.

justwanttoweeinpeace · 11/02/2017 12:07

Yep, without tie backs looks spot on Grin

The80sweregreat · 11/02/2017 12:07

It looks lovely. Mine could do with a makeover.
