Is my sitting room "old"? (I'm only 29!) PICTURE

NC for this.

Advice please... a friend of mine was over the other day and said my sitting room looked "old lady" Confused

I'm only 29! The curtains are crushed velvet which I understand to be very en vouge and grey walls which I thought were fashionable too?!

The furniture is expensive so don't want to get rid of it to fit the room to a tee.

Cross-post before the new photo - that's much better Smile

Minniemagoo · 11/02/2017 11:30

I have a much younger SIL who has this style. IMO its classy and elegant. Beautifully put together and not old lady at all.

Dragongirl10 · 11/02/2017 11:30

Lovely welcoming living room op, not old fashioned at all....

JoJoSM2 · 11/02/2017 11:31

I love the windows... The room looks elegant. I don't think there's anything old fashioned at all, just classy. A bit unusual for someone in their 20s as people tend to imagine young first time buyers in shabbier flats furnished with Ikea and hand me downs.

eurochick · 11/02/2017 11:31

That makes all the difference.

museumum · 11/02/2017 11:31

Much better curtains. I don't think the vase of tulips are helping the look tbh. They are a bit older lady on the mantle like that.

BreatheDeep · 11/02/2017 11:32

I was going to say the tie-backs age it too and can see that the new picture proves that. Looks lovely now!

Chickennuggetfeeder · 11/02/2017 11:33

I love it! Id say its not old ladyish at all just very stylish

ArriettyClock1 · 11/02/2017 11:33

So much better without those nasty tie backs!

I'd go one step further and lose the curtains completely 😬

But I am not a fan of curtains.

OhTheRoses · 11/02/2017 11:33

Hides tulips on mantle Grin

TondelayaDellaVentamiglia · 11/02/2017 11:33

it's the tiebacks...i agree with weeinpeace

also I think it would look better if the curtains were puddled a bit on the floor, and although i like crushed velvet it does make them look overly busy

and I would try and hide the wall between the curtains, make it look more as if the window was full height and width...maybe tack/clip the non leading edg of the curtains together?

Other than that....it's your sitting room, and she can bugger off :o

VestalVirgin · 11/02/2017 11:35

It is your sitting room. As long as you like it, where is the problem? You have no obligation to make it suit another person's tastes.

As others said, it looks classy.

Too modern for my taste; if I had the money to afford a house with fireplace and all the furniture I want, I think I would have a very "old lady" sitting room, and I'd be totally okay with that. Grin
(I'm 30)

TondelayaDellaVentamiglia · 11/02/2017 11:35

hah...cross posted, see, it's MUCH nicer without the tiebacks!

Crumbs1 · 11/02/2017 11:35

I'm older and not sort of sitting room for oldies - few key things mark it out as younger persons.

Rug is not large enough for room so not yet in position to have heirloom type rug.
The throw thing on sofa
The thing you put your feet up,on - not sure what you'd call it - but not suggestive of age or buying for life.

Looks like an aspiring younger person - which is not a criticism, in fact opposite.

pieceofpurplesky · 11/02/2017 11:36

I am 47 and it looks a bit old to me - like my mum's house. It is beautiful though

But each to their own - my lounge has dark green and purple bits and lots of people think it weird ...

pimmsy · 11/02/2017 11:36

Much better without the curtain ties!
Looks great.

Iamastonished · 11/02/2017 11:36

"a gas fire"

Oh, heaven preserve us! Gas fires are old fashioned now Hmm

We are on mains gas. Our house is heated by gas, and we have a gas fire (rarely used) in our front room. It comes in very useful if we have a power cut.

Believeitornot · 11/02/2017 11:37

Is this a stealth boast?

nbee84 · 11/02/2017 11:38

I think what makes it look 'older' is that it looks classy and the furniture looks good quality. A lot of people in their 20's don't have the money for quality furnishings. Certainly when I was furnishing my 1st home it was Argos and Ikea stuff. It's only as I've got older and my wages have improved that I've been able to upgrade my things. I like it (but then I am nearly 50 not an old lady Grin)

BlueFolly · 11/02/2017 11:38

Yep, was going to say loose the tie backs! Much better now.

VaginaSuprise · 11/02/2017 11:39

You don't need to make any changes based on the opinions of others. It's your room, have it exactly as you want it. Personally I think you have excellent taste. It's a lovely room.

Itsmytemporaryname · 11/02/2017 11:39

What's going on with your cushion arrangement?

RedSauce · 11/02/2017 11:39

I was gonna say only the curtains looked a bit dated, but you've changed them now and the whole room looks much better! Not an old lady room at all.

Although... I'm an ancient 31, so what do I know?

Badcat666 · 11/02/2017 11:40

Lovely room with lovely furniture that won't "age" as you go along. As others have said I'd call it "classic". At least it's not full of stuff that will be out of fashioned in the next 30 seconds.

Old lady to me is mad coloured carpets, high back chairs in green "slip on" covers and "arm covers" and clashing curtains with horrible dark brown nest of tables (covered in old copies of "The People's Friend") Grin

RobotLover68 · 11/02/2017 11:40

I'm nearly 50 and I wouldn't have it, sorry - I do think it looks old lady, yes
