If you live in a 3 bedroom house what size are the bedrooms?

We live in a terraced house with 2 large bedrooms that we're thinking of turning into 3. This would give us:

Mine and DH bedroom - 3.4 x 3.5m
DS1 bedroom - 2m x 3.5m
DS2 bedroom - 2m x 3m

Moving house isn't really an option at the moment as we want to stay in the catchment area for school and we love our location - this option would give the DS's a much needed room each - but is 2m too narrow for a bedroom? TIA

I think making two bedrooms only 2m wide wouldn't be a good option as they it would be a struggle to fit double beds in them? So essentially you'd be creating two single bedrooms. Maybe make one of them larger so it's a proper double and make the other a single room.

Not sure on the exact measurements but approximately
Bed 1 - 4.5m x 3.5m
Bed 2 - 4.75m x 3.75m
Bed 3 - 2.7m x 3.3m

Agree that two 2m bedrooms is too small. People expect 1 may only be 2made but more than that would put me off.

Bed 1 - 3.7m x 2.7m
plus a corridor bit with a fitted wardrobe in it that would be 2.1m x 1m if the wardrobe wasn't there

Bed 2 - 3.3m x 2.7m

Bed 3 - 3.3m x 1.8m with a corner taken out of it where the airing cupboard is

I would, without a doubt, especially as you're staying put and it works for your family. 2m is really small yes, but I would see if you can get a single bed width way in each room (i.e. along the 2m wall - a single bed is usually 2m long so you'd have to pick the frames carefully) and then they are 70cm wide. You'd had adequate floor space for drawers / desk. Also depending on where doors / windows are, consider the high / loft beds. You might be better a joiner in to custom make 2 for you to fit the exact dimensions of the rooms.

When you do come to sell, as long as it was a stud wall, you could go back to 2 bedrooms but in the meantime, your DSs have their own room which is really important.

FWIW, our 3 bed was 5m x 4.2m, 4.1m x 4.1m and 2.9m x 2.9m.

Hi namedchangedtoday15 yes we could get their single beds widthways in each of the rooms - thats the layout I was planning - like you say then there would be room for a wardrobe and chest of drawers each.

We could take the stud wall down if we ever wanted to sell and go back to a 2 bed without too much hassle (not planning to put radiators or electrics on stud wall)

We've got two doubles and a box, and the box is 197cm wide by 3m long. We've actually got a pull out double in there along with two bookcases and it works fine - obviously there's more space when it's a single but you can definitely use it as a double too.

If that set up works better for you then I'd go for it.

I live in a row of cottages similar size to your house and some people with children have done just this.
The rooms are fine for single beds and stops squabbling. Next door sold theirs as a 3bed to a family who needed three bedrooms however small

16'x10'; 13'x10' and 9'x6'.

We've done very similar but went from 3 to 4 bedrooms (were in a fairly cheap area). Modest master, approx 6x8 box, 12 x 10 ft original bed 2 thats now a 10 x 6 and by pinching a bit of the master an 8x7.

We needed to move to a very specific area to be near to family and thought about extending but actually reconfiguring the bedrooms and using bespoke furniture built in has ment the DC all love their rooms.

We have three bedrooms and the two smallest are both 2m wide. In fact I think one is 1.98. It is fine. As you say, a single bed fits across and both dc have wardrobes and drawers. It's small but, for us, infinitely preferable to a shared room. We had alterations to get three beds from the existing two. We don't intend to move unless we win the lottery so aren't really concerned about the resale aspect.

Feeling really old reading this as I can only visualise room size in feet and inches. I have no idea whether they are big or small. Makes me wonder what age people who measure rooms in metres are, when was the 'real' switch?

I can only visualise lengths in feet - I'm 41.

I'd get the room really tidy and take some nice pics in good light before you do anything, so you have them to show prospective buyers if you ever sell.

But I'd say this is a perfect example of a time when you should do what's right for you, not what's right for selling the house.

I only ever use metres. Am 38.

36 and only use metres. It drives me mad when estate agents' floor plans only show feet and inches.

On topic - could you do a loft conversion? We're just about to turn out two bed terrace into a 4 bed by doing one.

Would they have a window each? I'd say fine if they are proper rooms, nothing wrong with small.

We have 2 of our dc in rooms smaller than your small ones (2m x 2.5m). So I would say it's fine. You just need to be creative about how the room's organised. Assume each room would have its own radiator, window and power sockets.

Think ours would all be classed as double rooms.
Room 1:- 6.5m x 3.5m
Room2:- 4.3m x 4.3m
Master room:- 9.8m x 6.5m

Ours has two big doubles and a small single. Small bedroom is 3.05 x 2.32m, so very similar to your measurements.

DS aged 8 uses this bedroom and it is small. But what helps is a mid sleeper bed with small bookcases and a little reading space underneath. He has the tall Stuva wardrobe from Ikea so drawers and hanging space all in one - no need for separate wardrobe and chest of drawers. He has a small desk as well. So all doable but it is a tight squeeze.

Under bed storage/ play space is a must in such a small bedroom.

Oh and you can also look at shorty midsleepers if that would help!

I only use metres to compare size, square feet doesn't really mean much to me.

We've been hunting for a property go several months now, whenever I see a new one come on RM I'm straight to the floor plan checking out the metres squared.

If it's smaller than our current rented property I tend to glaze over & rule that one out!

Yes 4yoniD they would have a window each and a separate door to each room so a proper conversion.

That's the thing TurqoiseDress - every 3 bed house we look at has rooms of a similar size (or sometimes even smaller) that what we could get by converting our current space.

HidBandSil - our house was originally a cottage so we're already in the loft otherwise we would have done that already. Our current rooms are dormer bedrooms so sloping ceilings so we would be building up to full height at the front and back and converting the 2 rooms into 3 plus a new corridor so each room has its own entrance.

Metres is useful when are wondering if you can fit in furniture which is measured in metric.
