If you had your house rewired, how much did it cost?

We live in a large 4 bedroom semi in NW London and are getting some quotes for a full rewire.
The highest price has been £14K, the lowest £7K.
Can anyone who has had a similar property rewired give us an idea of what they paid?

I'd be interested to know as well as looking to do this soon, my building surveyor has estimated £5k for full rewire (4bed semi in SE almost London prices) sounds like that might not be realistic

We've just had a full rewire of our 3 bed detached for £4K. We are in the East Midlands though.

We are going to have to live in the house and the £14K one also included moving everything but the bare essentials into a storage unit.

A bed semi in SW £5k. £14k sounds quite expensive

Ours was 5k for full rewire but not kitchen cos that had been done few years earlier

This was before we moved into the house so it was completely empty so didn't need to put stuff away each day or move anything apart from carpet and floorboards etc took him about 10 working days

This is NW London/Herts/Bucks area

This also was to provide new fuse box and plug sockets etc also 2 outside weatherproof sockets

We are in Herts/ NW London area. Our rewire starts next week. 3 bed semi excluding the kitchen, living room is £3k. I imagine the total will be roughly £5k in the end. We are doing this in 2 stages as rhe original quote does not include the extension which will include the kitchen and living room. Hope this makes sense/helps.

We have just had our three bed terraced house in SW greater London rewired for £3.5k but that doesn't include kitchen/diner which has been quoted at another £1500.

£7k for a four bed large house in London doesn't sound too bad if you think our small house will come out at £5k. I don't know what fixings you've been quoted for i.e have you picked nice plugs/lights etc?

There is a Which link that details rough estimates for having this work done although it doesn't seem to be in line with other figures quoted in this thread so it's either out of date or we've all been mugged Confused

The work also didn't take anywhere near as long (3 days work tops) as detailed in that link but our house was stripped bare anyway. The materials cost hardly anything and it's not exactly labour intensive so it did make us wince.

Friend of mine is having a large 5 bed done at the moment and it's costing 8k. We live in the south east.

Okay, that's all really helpful. I'm thinking the £14K guy really doesn't want the job!
Did anyone live in? If so, How long did it take?

£7k here for a full rewire in a large5 bed period detached property. South East. Lived in it but it is really messy work so you need to be prepared. You will pay more if you are living in it as the contractor will have to move stuff around and can't just crack on in multiple rooms. If this is part of an extensive programme of refurbishment you might want to consider moving out to temp accomdation if that is an option. You might then find more contractors more willing to take on the work and yes, in my opinion the £14k quote was a put-off quote! Good luck!

Do you have children OP?

Cos the floorboards will prob have to be taken up so could be dangerous for children to move around the house

We can't move out for various reasons. if we could, we would!
We have 4 kids, the youngest of whom is 8, so we are hoping we can exist downstairs for a week or so ( tents in the garden, perhaps?) while upstairs is done!
It's just a rewire, we aren't extending or anything.

We have grotty old carpet with old parquet flooring underneath it downstairs. We are not sure what we are going to do re flooring yet.

We lived in. It took 6 days. We made sure we were out of the house 8-6 every day so they could get on. It was a bit messy and dusty and we couldn't really use the kitchen properly. The floorboards were up in places. We stored a lot of our stuff in the garage. It helped that our electricians were really friendly and our son saw it as a bit of an adventure!

My Sister has bought a house (2 bed terrace in Midlands) and had it all decorated and some new plastering and all new floor downstairs.
They just found out they need to get a full rewire. The electrician has quoted £3K. They are going to stay at the grandparents as they have a 18 month old.
Will they need to make holes in walls and lift floorboards? If so, it sounds like it will cost more as they will have to do some re decorating too.

Midlands 3 bed semi £3800 including power to garage and outdoor sockets. Lived in, all carpets removed before rewire. £200 to get plasterer to finish walls.

We had this done earlier in the year. They didn't do the kitchen but did do everything else. Ours was straightforward because we only had two carpets and every floor was floorboards.

They will have to lift floorboards. They will also make holes in walls if old sockets have to be removed and new ones put in in different (higher) positions. There will be channeling into the walls. In short, there will be a lot of cosmetic repair work afterwards. They will definitely need to do some plaster repairs and redecorating.

We had full house rewired, 10 spotlights added, sockets added and fuse box moved for £3600 around 6 years ago. Ours was a 1960s house.

Ours is a 3bed 1930s semi in SE London. It costed is around £3500 in 2013. Our electrician was EXCELLENT. PM me if anyone wants his number.

How do they deal with the floors if its concrete floors and not floorboards which can be lifted up.
For those who had carpets lifted, were the carpets condemned or could they be reused?
Has anyone had a recent quote for rewiring in NW England or can recommend a qualified & reliable electrician please?

4.5 k for a 5 bed house but it was empty of furniture and it was to be redecorated afterwards and rented out so simple electrics installed. One electrician took around 2 weeks to do this.
