If I get round to posting individual rooms in my house (preparing for sale) would anyone be interested in coming on and bluntly telling me 'that bit looks shit, tidy it or fix it' Grin

Ok, different problem. The kitchen. Dh just painted it white today. It's not been cleaned, none of the stuff has been put back apart from the kettle (and I'm currently making dinner)

It's VERY dated.

What would you leave out on work surfaces?

What would you put on the window sill?

Is the canvas thing going in the garage too, or do you have 2 linen categories?

HamaTime · 23/01/2016 18:48

I think the kitchen is ok, just have as little out as possible.

SwedishEdith · 23/01/2016 18:48

What's the market like where you are? I was going to say that you should dress the room as a bedroom but remembered that we bought when one room was dressed as a study and know someone who has just sold in same circumstances.

LaurieFairyCake · 23/01/2016 18:48

No other linen apart from the spares that are in the tumble dryer, already changed the beds.

The linens I've put away are mostly extras, cushions, table cloths, Christmas linens (I had 3 Christmas table cloths and 20 linen napkins)

Kitchen isn't anywhere near as bad as I thought from your pre-picture post!!

Work surfaces- literally the basics. Kettle, toaster, microwave. Tea, coffee and sugar and that's your lot.

Window cill- flower/plant with a bit of colour or something in the middle and that's it.

I'd also see to the hinges on that cupboard door next to the washing machine.

tryandtryagain · 23/01/2016 18:50

I personally only have a kettle and jar of utensils on my work surface. All condiments and food stuff in cupboards. Only have tea coffee sugar out if the canisters are pretty to look at and immaculately clean. If not in a cupboard. A plant in windowsill or herbs. In pots. Absolutely no washing up liquid / cloths on show on the windowsill or drainer. But I think the kitchen looks a good size and could look beautiful in photos a real selling point.

LaurieFairyCake · 23/01/2016 18:52

Yep, cupboard door came off when the pipe under the sink went a month ago . Think it just needs re tightening

Ok kitchen - clear EVERYTHING off the work tops except kettle toaster and maybe a fruit bowl.
The cupboard door under the sink is it just open because there's to much stuff in there for it to close or does the door need fixing? Whichever it us fix it!
Personally I would buy a blind for the window to make it look more welcoming and brighten up the kitchen

Get rid of the bottles on the butchers block (?)in the picture.
Clean clean clean- everything!

LaurieFairyCake · 23/01/2016 18:55

There is a blind, was taken off for reprinting

The kitchen is 15 foot by 10 foot

The thing I saw first about your kitchen was the door hanging down, can you fix that easily? One thing that rings true was a programme I saw that said if buyers see a lot of little maintenance tasks haven't been done they worry about the large ones being neglected too.
And then get everything off the surfaces you can (leaving kettle, toaster).

RJnomore1 · 23/01/2016 18:56

The kitchen isn't so bad. Nothing on work tops except the kettle. Is that a trolley at the right. It goes. It makes it look like there's not enough cupboards.

Laurie I do t mean to be cruel but you have a shitload of stuff and you need to get shot. No one needs 4 Xmas tablecloths and 20 linen napkins.

When did you last use a linen napkin?

You have a nice and from the sound of it large home there but it's full of stuff you don't need. If you really can't bear to part with it out it all in storage while you sell.

LaurieFairyCake · 23/01/2016 18:56

Swedish - market buoyant. No others for sale in our close. One was sale in September, sold in a day

Kitchen is nice but every single thing save perhaps toaster must be off countertops. A blind, valance or cafe shutters for the window.

scrivette · 23/01/2016 19:00

Instead of buying a bed can you dress the spare room as a study? Move an existing PC or laptop into there etc?

In the kitchen clear as much stuff off as you can, just the essentials should be out (tea, coffee, kettle, toaster etc).

LaurieFairyCake · 23/01/2016 19:00

We used all the linen napkins at Christmas - 2 meals, 10 people.

And I made them myself out of antique linen - I'm a crafter Grin And when I move I'm getting a 20 foot craft room (building a shed in the garden)

So not getting rid of anything. Hence renting a garage - doesn't go with the house

LeaLeander · 23/01/2016 19:05

I love vintage linen; don't feel you have to get rid of them. (And I have built both a large shed and a greenhouse in the past two years and not regretted a single penny! Had to work like a dog on side jobs to afford it but trust me you will love your shed.)

Quodlibet · 23/01/2016 19:30

You've got the same kitchen cupboards as me!

LaurieFairyCake · 23/01/2016 19:33

Ok. I've got an idea about the bedroom. What about if I use this teal iron French thing I have in my shed

Yes, put that in spare room.

Get rid of the canvas thing.

Kitchen - as little as possible out, and get brand new t towels just for 'show'

RJnomore1 · 23/01/2016 19:36

That's perfect.
