Buying a house in Manchester - Hyde, advice please

Relocating from the south to Manchester. Been looking at houses in suburb areas around Manchester. Saw a really nice four bedroom detached on mottram road in Hyde, is priced at £475k. Been looking at reviews on Internet about Hyde area - mostly not very good ones. Is this too much price to pay in this area? Anyone can give us some advice?
We prefer suburb area but still easily drivable to Manchester centre.

Sure there are nice bits but I would't buy in Hyde! The nicer suburbs are to the south eg Heatons, Didsbury, Cheadle, Bramhall. Also Worsley to the west and Prestwich to the north.

That sounds like a lot for the area. I would suggest going visiting a few areas before even looking at houses, so you can get a feel for the place and decide where you want to live.

Manchester has many suburbs, with a big mix of nice and not so nice areas. Start with the areas christelle has suggested.

I think there are nice areas of Hyde - the Gee Cross side is a bit better I think. No idea where Mottram Road is.

Are you planning to drive in to the City Centre for work? Or train? Direct trains to Manchester also run through Bramhall, Cheadle and Wilmslow which are all nice on that side and then Marple, Strines on the other.

I think it very much depends where in Hyde it is. That house is a beauty. You can do a search for your requirements on Rightmove for Manchester as a whole then go and look at the areas where you like the houses for sale. Also factor in where you need to get to for work, etc.

You get more for your money outside the more-trumpeted and, imo, often overrated areas of Didsbury, Chorlton, etc. It does very much depend what you are looking for.

Where that particular house is quite nice - open countryside although the house is on a main road (although it is a bit near Hattersley which is a bit questionable (or was when I lived in Staly..)

I was going to say I thought the price was a bit steep for that house but on reading the listing you're actually getting two houses?

I think that property is priced as it is because it has the separate coach house. Hyde would not be on a list of "nice" suburbs. Have you visited? Obviously Manchester and the surrounding area is a huge area, but rightmove is quite dangerous because photographs can be deceptive.

Heaton Moor is lovely. Right next to Heaton Chapel Station, great links to town and afar. It is a nice place. Visit there first and take a look around. Good shops, pubs, schools & restaurants. (it's the first nice place outside of Manchester )

Went to Bolton to see a couple today. Saw a nice one in Radcliffe area..

I do feel the one in Hyde is but overprice compared to other houses in the same area. But like gemmateller said it comes with a coach house which is. Big selling point for my boyfriend as it gives us a large double garage and a self contained flat which can earn us bit of rental income I supposed. But again with this price range surely there r nicer hence "posher" areas?

Radcliffe looks nice and the house we saw again comes with some woodland which is a big bonus

I also suggest Marple/Strines area. Even out to Disley as straight up A6 to town plus rail links

Radcliffe has nice bits and godawful bits. I've seen some really good value houses round there though.

With that sort of budget I wouldn't be looking anywhere north or east of the city centre. Or in Salford. £0.02

CheeseBadger Worsley is in Salford and is lovely. Parts of neighbouring Swinton are very nice too. Don't write off the whole of Salford.

You're right of course. I just lack imagination. How are you feeling about leaving Manchester BTW? Don't think I could do it...

Just have to if it comes to it! I've told DP I want to be near amenities, etc. We're going to look around Milton Keynes to start with I think.

Just had a quick look OP and if you are looking up to £500k then Sale, Timperley, Worsley, Swinton, Prestwich, Chorlton, Whalley Range, parts of Denton are all worth a look.

Wowfudge I think we do similar jobs - are you relocating with work? My parents moved from Manchester to Northamptonshire about 20 years ago (about 20 mins) outside of MK. Have you figured out the grid system and taken your travel sickness pills for the roundabouts in MK ?!

Ha ha mandy - it's DP's job that is changing and he'll be London-based whereas his office base is Sheffield at the moment. It's going to take a few months to resolve as there are security checks to pass before he can formally accept. I have been through MK lots of times on trains, but haven't properly had a look around. Northamptonshire is a possibility.

With a budget of £475K I don't think Hyde is a good idea. I agree with a lot of the suggestions especially Marple, Marple Bridge, Bramhall, Disley, Wilmslow are all nice areas.

I wouldn't let the naysayers put your off straight away

Every thread on here about the North-West insists that the only decent areas are the boring old S.Manc/Cheshire staples - Didsbury, Bramhall, Hale, Wilmslow. Most people just wouldn't contemplate living elsewhere, and are pretty blinkered.

I work in role that means I travel widely in greater Manchester. Pretty much every one of the 10 boroughs has areas that I'd be more than happy to live in. The centre of Hyde is a little tatty, and not very cosmopolitan, but there are some nice suburbs bordering on beautiful countryside going out towards Glossop and Staylybridge.

You get much more for your money outside the S.Manc/Cheshire borders, and you can still find excellent areas with great schools.

Where's the Radcliffe House? There are some lovely roads there - Whitefield/Stand end - and Philips is a great school.

I couldn't agree more Volumnia. The OP can get a huge house for the price of a two bed garret in Didsbury. Slight exaggeration, but there are lots of nice places.

But its all about location location location . Radcliffe was quite bizarre, lots of new developments next to really awful areas. Sweeping generalisation but a school mum friend bought an expensive property in Salford just before the crash and it's still in quite significant negative equity. It hasn't got enough going for it to drag prices back up. Obviously there are better parts of Salford than others. The more expensive suburbs held their value in the crash (I think official stats showed that Trafford prices for instance only dropped on average by 8% and recovered very quickly and started increasing again) so overall, generally speaking those suburbs are a better investment.

Well I sold a two up two down in the centre of Swinton, so an okay, but not great area, at the end of last year. Prices were back to 2007 rates and appear to have increased since then.

Whether someone has made a good investment isn't purely down to the area it's in.

No I agree, its not all down to area and of course its down to individual circumstances of the transactions, but the "better" suburbs of Manchester outperform, in general, the not so nice areas. Its just another factor to bear in mind when considering where to buy.

I live close to hyde and can give you some info.

Town centre not great think charity shops and cash generators but transport very good to Manchester

Mottram road is very busy at the lower end , but that house is more towards godley end and quieter

There is loads of walks nearby /nature reserves and canals , a good park for kids but primary schools not brilliant in hyde but a good one in hattersley. Secondary schools good.

Gee cross is the nicer area.
That price is expensive but you are getting 2 houses but I would still offer less.

Overall its ok there are some rough people in the centre of hyde but there is a strong community which does help each other.

There is lots to do if you are outdoorsy and drive for a short distance
