Would this look ok at the side of the front door? Or one either side maybe?

I'm trying to cover up a hideous painted house number at the side of my door (previous owners thought it would be a good idea to gloss paint the number in huge letters at hip height!) and need something to go over it. These planters are perfect size, but will they look daft low down? I'm painting the front door, either red or green, I'm undecided at the minute, but these planters have a bit of each colour so would blend in.

Very festive looking.

Might look a bit odd at that height. Why not paint over it or put a small bay tree in front of it, grow a clematis/climber over it?

Also, odd numbers look better, three or five? ????

You could paint a neat rectangle and then fix trellis over it. Then you can have a planter on the ground and grow something like an evergreen clematis or honeysuckle or something? I think those pots will draw the eye too much, you probably want the door to be the feature if it's red.

If you live in a colourful area eg by sea then it would look lovely or outside the UK where houses are often lovely colourful. Othewise as SWEETandFULLofGRACE has said.

Thanks for all the constructive feedback; think maybe they're too bright, but I'm just desperate to hide this bloody number, having tried thinners and jetwashing to no avail! This is the first thing I've seen that is exactly the right size to cover the mess and I figured I couldn't make it any worse!!!

No, Trellis with a climber growing up is the way to go.

Get a new house number sign, one that you like, to put over the numbers.

How big are the numbers? What colour is your brick, and what colour is the paint?

The pots seem like a christmas decoration - I think with the power of mumsnet we can find better.

Number is 13 inches high by 9.5 inches wide (which is how wide the bit of wall is). It's painted in white gloss, very scruffily, and at hip height to the side of the door. Just on normal red brick, no other paint anywhere, so painting over it would look odd I think.

I'd thought about a planter with trellis, but they all seem too wide to fit where I need it to fit.

You can get narrow trellises, like this. You could perhaps back it with some sort of board rather than paint the bricks? Then it will look removeable to a possible future buyer...

I love that but it doesn't say how wide it is. All the ones I've looked at seem to be 12inch which will stick out at the side of the house.

if nitromors paint stripper hasn't worked then get some caustic soda from hardwear shop. Mix it into a stiff paste with some bog standard wallpaper paste and apply a thick coat to the painted number. Cover with polythene/plastic bag by taping it to the wall if it looks like rain. In the morning scrub off with warm water and a scrubbing brush. WEAR GLOVES!!!

Failing that I would either fix a narrow trellis to the wall or paint the bricks round the door white, or attach a length of wood to the wall, that is not quite the length of the door, screw in some iron brackets & bung a plant pot in

No that wouldn't work as there's a brick surround, then these numbers are painted on at the side on another bit of brick.

I've tried nitramors and it didn't touch it but I'll try that method :)

Have you tried wire wool and/ or a wire brush?

Alternatively, could you paint a white gloss background over the painted number and then plant infront.

They're quite bright and would detract from whatever plants you used unless the flowers were white, but you could have 3 planters on the number side, in a column, with lots of lovely petunias cascading out.

The trellis is a good idea, too.

I'd look into how to remove graffiti - councils etc manage this ...but not sure how ...maybe worth finding out? You might get some good tips?
