I'll start.

A kitchen island.
A hall console table.
A corner sofa.
New rugs.

I am thinking of getting a plumbed-in Miele coffee machine.

MIL has Flotex carpet in her kitchen, circa 1989. She's having a kitchen revamp later this year and is looking to replace it.

With some new Flotex.

ThatBloodyWoman · 29/03/2015 22:45

Ouiji board, tarot cards,or a history of being used in acts involving the occult.

trixymalixy · 29/03/2015 22:56

I like metro tiles too, I had them in my last flat. Although that was ten years ago.....

YoullLikeItNotaLot · 29/03/2015 22:58

I have so much of this stuff!

In fairness, I hate the laminate floors but I'm not getting them replaced until I get some building work done (to reverse some if the open plan I had done a few years back - personally I'm a great fan if open plan but as the kids get older it'll not work as well).

I have big fuck off flowery wall paper too that I have grown to hate - it's not the flowery wall paper - I think some people even now would like it but it's been up 8 years or so and I can't wait until we replace it (in a few weeks).

Things I'd hate...yeah, not keen on conservatories. I don't like kitchens with wooden doors when the exposed side of the cabinet is white (as in what the inside of the cabinet also looks like) rather than paying the extra for the matching end piece - most kitchens in eastenders are like that.

I don't like slavish devotion to a style or era. Mix it up a bit - you can have a fabulous piece of art or light fitting in a period house.

I hate themed rooms - as a pp said, seaside themed bathrooms are ack.

I don't think there's much else I feel strongly about - I'm more certain about what I like than don't like if that makes sense?

MaraThonbar · 29/03/2015 22:59

I'll be furious if kitchen islands become the avocado suite of our generation. Our kitchen is crying out for one and it would be the perfect way to add storage and an extra worktop to a large space which is currently wasted.

Devora · 29/03/2015 22:59

I agree with Mintyy. I LOVE these threads - funny and fascinating - and I don't support many of us DON'T find things we love cited on here, but most of us take it in good humour. I know my house isn't to everyone's taste - it's not hugely to my taste, come to that - but I do feel my life is a little bit richer for knowing that some people have an aversion to new rugs, or red kitchen accessories, or green paint.

Mind, I don't take offence when my kids' names are slagged off on baby name threads either. Or when I read that my style is 'mumsy'.

marshmallowpies · 29/03/2015 23:01

Oh carpet tiles - yes I suppose I have seen those in kitchens.

A friend of mine works at the BBC and was being moved to a new office being renovated for his dept. BBC cutbacks being what they are, though, the renovated building was floored with OLD carpet tiles taken from another building which were all stained from many years of BBC coffee spills.

The tiles were all put down any old way, though, so none of the stains matched up any more. Somehow the thought of all these stained tiles in a random arrangement bothers me more - if they'd tried to match the stains up as they originally were, it would at least look like they'd made an effort....

HerRoyalNotness · 29/03/2015 23:05

My mother

lostmymarblesbutfoundthewine · 29/03/2015 23:07

I'll add bucket fulls of absolute crap.

a woman can dream....

marshmallowpies · 29/03/2015 23:08

There are lots of things on here I would not choose for myself but I can see why others like them a bit like tattoos - I don't really like wallpaper but done well it can look amazing; never say never!

I have a friend who has a seaside themed bathroom - but then she & her partner are keen sailors and it's all stuff that actually means something to them from their travels rather than random seaside tat. I would t do the same, but I like the way they've done theirs.

Amethyst24 · 29/03/2015 23:08

What is it about conservatories? I hate them but I can't work out why. They just seem so vulgar somehow Blush Round here (SE London) there are LOADS of houses with dreadful conservatories tacked on to the side return or the back of the house. What were people thinking? They look awful.

SoOverItNow · 29/03/2015 23:14

Anaglypta wallpaper
Plastic ceiling tiles
Draughty sash windows
Swirly carpets
A ' garden room'
Mice

All here when we moved in!

SnowPetrel · 29/03/2015 23:15

Log burning stove (don't understand it in houses with central heating - they're already adequately heated so that makes it a hobby and burning wood is not one I choose to have)
Air fresheners of any kind - what's wrong with fresh air & why pump extra chemicals into your home
More than one TV

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 29/03/2015 23:22

I have some beautiful Anaglypta

They're not all the same, you know Grin

PigletJohn · 29/03/2015 23:23

kitchen islands:

Not enough room in my current kitchen, but I saw a fantastic prep bench that was on (concealed) large industrial wheels and rolled out to the middle of the room for cutting, slicing etc. It had shelves and drawers for oils, spices, knives, and a built-in waste bin. However it could be pushed back to the wall, or turned as an L-end or breakfast bar or wet bar or sideboard.

It was not wired or plumbed, though. I can see how to do it, but it would be tricky if someone moved it while connected.

I think I know who the designer was so I might ask.

In a previous house I had an "L" with drawers and cupboard doors on both the kitchen side and the family side, which I was pleased with. It had no unsightly back. The extra doors did cost a fair bit.

Devora · 29/03/2015 23:25

Now, I like the idea of a wheely prep bench. And a walk-in larder to store it in [dreams]

Clairej81 · 29/03/2015 23:29

Uneven floors, lived in a 1920s house and it was solid and everything was straight and level. Moved to a newer house and the floors slope in every room. Also don't like brickwork that has been painted.

NoelHeadbands · 29/03/2015 23:30

Like many people have said, I have loads of these.

And there are also things I agree are naff, but secretly hanker for Blush I put this down to having grown up dirt poor, in a dirty horrible house, envying things in other people's homes....one friend had thick green carpet in the bathroom, that went up the side of the bath! Shock fancy having thick expensive carpet somewhere that couldn't even be walked on- the DECADENCE!

Grin

Anyhow, if pushed I'd have to say I don't like conservatories, gloss kitchens and brightly coloured splash backs

Didactylos · 30/03/2015 00:00

I just want a house!

and then I am going to get naff letters that can be rearranged to spell out live evil vole on the mantle

RulerLenska · 30/03/2015 00:04

OP - thanks for clarifying that I wasn't worrying about anything important Smile but I find it hard to take you seriously anymore as you tell me "I prefer my ancient rugs because they LAY flat on the ground, the ends don't curl up, and they continue to look good". How can someone take their home furnishing so seriously but can't master the basics of the English language?

Disclaimer - I know I am a pedant.

Why do people not know the difference between LAY and LIE, SIT and SAT?? You have touched a sore point so I need to bow out.

Plug in air fresheners or any freshener infact. They all smell awful!

Microwave, bidet, artex, lament floors, woodchip wallpaper, kitchen island, a kitchen too small for a dining table, a shell shaped hand basin, lots of ornaments , too much stuff and carpets.

GuiltyAsAGirlCanBe · 30/03/2015 00:26

Leather sofa
Corner sofa
Glass furniture of any kind - coffee table, tv unit etc
Anything "modern"
Pine anything
I also hate "feature walls"
Twigs and pebbly shit
Stupid signs/words as above
Fairy lights - except at Xmas
I also really hate reed diffusers - come under the same category as twigs and shit IMO

GuiltyAsAGirlCanBe · 30/03/2015 00:38

Metro tiles - and a nice sign reminding you of what the bath ought to be used for ... www.housetohome.co.uk/room-idea/picture/traditional-bathrooms-10-of-the-best-1/6

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 30/03/2015 00:54

Exposed beams - I've got a slight phobia about them.
Ensuite.

PigletJohn · 30/03/2015 00:55

is there a sign over the WC?
