Something shorted out. Could be a lamp holder.

Can you use table lamps, torch until it is daylight?

BoBoo · 28/07/2014 20:53

Doing this on tablet with no lights, not going well. All the downstairs lights have gone off, but everything else still working. The trip switch is down, but when I flick it back up it won't stay up and seems to spark.

If you turn all lights off, re-set switch, then put lights on one by one to check which is causing the problem

Quangle · 28/07/2014 20:56

this happens in my kitchen often despite rewiring less than 4 years ago. I have to go round switching everything off, even things that are not being used (dishwasher, radio, oven and hob etc etc) and then it will switch back.

Blowitout · 28/07/2014 20:58

This happened to me recently. Turned out that the microwave was faulty. It was plugged in at the time butnot in use. Once the plug was taken out of the socket the trip switch sent back up. Perhaps try unplugging all your appliances?

Panzee · 28/07/2014 20:59

The tumble drier did this to me, once unplugged they stayed on.

BoBoo · 28/07/2014 21:01

All the lights are off, I can't get the switch to go back up so can't see what might be causing it

If just the microswitch for light circuit it must be a light or cabling, so turn off all light switches, then try resetting.

BarbaraWoodlouse · 28/07/2014 21:01

Yes agree with others - something is faulty. Process of deduction is required hope it's not the laptop or your MNing days are numbered

Cindy34 · 28/07/2014 21:02

Anything wet? Fault with wiring somewhere.

Panzee · 28/07/2014 21:04

You have to do it one by one. :( start with the tumble dryer. :o

BoBoo · 28/07/2014 21:08

This is the switch if it makes any difference

The tumble drier isn't on the circuit, only the lights

OP posts:
BarbaraWoodlouse · 28/07/2014 21:11

Not your laptop or your tumble drier then Grin

Switch off every light switch then switch each one on one by one. Find the culprit and leave it switched off.

BoBoo · 28/07/2014 21:14

The lights are already all switched off, the trip switch won't go back up so I cant turn them back on one by one

You could try turning the power off (the red one, then reseting, then power back on. It would take the load off the circuit whilst you reset.

MrsTaraPlumbing · 28/07/2014 21:16

BoBoo
If the light circuit wont stay on then something must be on
-it could be caused by a blown bulb, something with water in.
I know you say everything is off but perhaps it sn't or perhaps there is something you forgot about?
Good luck.

CankieYandle · 28/07/2014 21:20

Is there a little button above the switch that is down? Ours went at the weekend and we couldn't flick the trip switch back up until we'd pressed the 'reset' button.

MrsTaraPlumbing · 28/07/2014 21:21

Of course all your lights are off because of the trip switch.
But you can't push it back in the on position because where ever the fault is - that light is turned on.

Even though you are in darkness turn all your lights off.

BoBoo · 28/07/2014 21:28

All the lights are turned off - I have checked every one and the switches are all down. I have turned the power off and the switch goes up but then goes straight back down

Anyone put up any shelves/ hooks or pictures downstairs recently?

BarbaraWoodlouse · 28/07/2014 21:35

Sorry I'm all out of ideas. Can you manage with torches/sit upstairs until the AM then call an electrician? Hope it's sorted quickly.

MisForMumNotMaid · 28/07/2014 21:35

Have you got traditional filament bulbs that you can see if they've blown by close inspection?

BoBoo · 28/07/2014 21:35

okay, have got the lights back on now one in the kitchen won't turn off! Time for an electrician. Or exorcist. Thanks for the crisis help.

Do you have any table lamps? You can probably pop them on a different circuit if they aren't already. it sounds like something is going wrong with your lighting circuit but everywhere else is okay?

It won't feel like it, but at least this has happened in the summer when it starts getting light at about 4:30am.
