no, I think that you probably have a split-load (16th Edition) consumer unit.

Most likely (about) half the circuits are protected by an RCD, this will probably be the sockets and any outdoor or outbuilding supplies and electric showers, and the rest are just controlled by the main switch (probably the lighting, cooker, and possibly freezer).

Look at your CU carefully, and I expect you will find it has a main switch at one end, and a separate RCD. Or you might have two CUs.

Oh we just had a power cut! Master switch on fuse box just tripped but living room lights still on. Do you think our neighbours are paying for our electricity in that room (attached barn conversion). Oops

Oh, the whole of the wiring in (at least) the kitchen is fucked. Another bodged job from the guy we bought the house from - every time something goes wrong we uncover a disaster. Gah.

Any joy finding out what is wrong?

Not turning off sounds like it has a leak to earth... so be careful touching anything metal on that light fitting.

We actually had a faulty trip switch on our board. We had the whole house in darkness and no power to anything!

Do you have any table lamps? You can probably pop them on a different circuit if they aren't already. it sounds like something is going wrong with your lighting circuit but everywhere else is okay?

It won't feel like it, but at least this has happened in the summer when it starts getting light at about 4:30am.

okay, have got the lights back on now one in the kitchen won't turn off! Time for an electrician. Or exorcist. Thanks for the crisis help.

Have you got traditional filament bulbs that you can see if they've blown by close inspection?

Sorry I'm all out of ideas. Can you manage with torches/sit upstairs until the AM then call an electrician? Hope it's sorted quickly.

Anyone put up any shelves/ hooks or pictures downstairs recently?

All the lights are turned off - I have checked every one and the switches are all down. I have turned the power off and the switch goes up but then goes straight back down

Of course all your lights are off because of the trip switch.
But you can't push it back in the on position because where ever the fault is - that light is turned on.
Even though you are in darkness turn all your lights off.

Is there a little button above the switch that is down? Ours went at the weekend and we couldn't flick the trip switch back up until we'd pressed the 'reset' button.

BoBoo
If the light circuit wont stay on then something must be on
-it could be caused by a blown bulb, something with water in.
I know you say everything is off but perhaps it sn't or perhaps there is something you forgot about?
Good luck.

You could try turning the power off (the red one, then reseting, then power back on. It would take the load off the circuit whilst you reset.

The lights are already all switched off, the trip switch won't go back up so I cant turn them back on one by one

Not your laptop or your tumble drier then Grin

Switch off every light switch then switch each one on one by one. Find the culprit and leave it switched off.

Report
BoBoo · 28/07/2014 21:09

The tumble drier isn't on the circuit, only the lights

Anything wet? Fault with wiring somewhere.

BarbaraWoodlouse · 28/07/2014 21:01

Yes agree with others - something is faulty. Process of deduction is required hope it's not the laptop or your MNing days are numbered

If just the microswitch for light circuit it must be a light or cabling, so turn off all light switches, then try resetting.

All the lights are off, I can't get the switch to go back up so can't see what might be causing it

The tumble drier did this to me, once unplugged they stayed on.
