1st is a victorian terraced with a sea view but in a less "posh" area:

Second is modern detached in a naice area walking distance from the sea:

DH and I each have a preference so I turn to you to break the tie.

Eemedied?! Remedied!

I prefer Crosby to formby as an area, for people who don't know them they're both desirable, formby prob more exclusive but both lovely.

Eskino · 21/07/2013 09:16

Number one house!!

I can see the appeal of house 2 but I reckon you'd spend the rest of your days dreaming about a seaside house, fgs it has a garden onto the beach!

formicadinosaur · 21/07/2013 11:37

Initially I thought number one as the outlook is amazing. So lovely. On street view the road looks rough. I don't know how old your kids are but they may be walking to their friends houses aged 11. Alone. How safe is the area?

I'd go for number two. Lots of potential. extend, go into attic and create a seaside feel while you go.

MortifiedAdams · 21/07/2013 11:42

Based solely on the houses (dont know the area or whats expensive or not), House One.

I dont like the look.of the outside of Two, and love ONes proximity to the sea.

Sand in your garden.
Sand in your house.
Sand-blasted exterior during storms meaning you have to really keep up with your outside maintenance.
Sand in your eyes when you go out in the wind.
Accelerated corrosion of metal.

If you're prepare to put up with that then go for house number 1, but investigate house insurance first as sea-front properties can have clauses in that don't give proper cover in the event of sea-flooding or other sand/sea caused damage.

sunnyshine · 21/07/2013 13:23

First house.

GettingVerySleepy · 21/07/2013 13:25

Blown away by all the responses, thank you! I have only lived in the Merseyside area for a short while so don't really know what the neighbourhood around house 1 is like. Everyone says Crosby is a good area but house 1 is on the outskirts in Brighton le Sands which used to be part of Waterloo. Not sure but I get the impression Waterloo is a little rough. For better or worse DH and I are middle class and not from this country so will stick out like a sore thumb anyway no matter where we live. So the safety of the area is important to us.

I don't particularly like the look of house 2 but I ink any detached house in Formby within our budget is going to look soulless. Character and charm are expensive! But the more I think about it, the more I fear the novelty of a lovely view would wear off and we'd be stuck in a cramped narrow house with an awkward layout and no way to expand, potentially with noisy neighbours. See, I have completely turned around on 1!

I'd buy house no1 in a heartbeat. NOt only is it gorgeous, with those lovely views, but it's walking distance from my lovely friend's house.

Sadly, it's the other end of the country from me.

Totally agree with your last post Getting.

BackforGood · 21/07/2013 19:17

Don't know the areas, but from what I can see "cold" as it were, then House 2 without a doubt.
House 1 is a funny shape, and lacking natural light. It's also terraced.
House 2 is a much better layout, and DETACHED - I'd pay a lot more money to not have to worry about disturbing the neighbours with my family's noise. Admitedly you have 1 less bedroom, but, over time, you have options to make changes at hse 2, but not hse1.
I'd love to be able to walk to the sea.
So, unless you have about 8 dc, and really need the 4th bedroom, then that's the only advantage I can see about hse1.

ihearsounds · 21/07/2013 19:37

The first one looks small and dark. THe kitchen is small and dull. The garden looks small. Master bedroom screams that every time you go loo in the middle of the night, you will stub your toe on the bed because of a lack of space. There is no windows in the living room, the light source comes from the patio doors in the dining room. Don't even get me started on the ceiling.

Who cares really how either are decorated, surely I am not the only one that moves in and redecorates. The first room to go would be that nasty pink room in the first one. Quickly followed by the living room.

The second one. The garden is bigger. The kitchen is bigger, ok its dated but still better than the first one. The bedrooms are bigger and lighter, not poky little dark things. The walls are a blank canvas, in that nothing will need stripping. The living room looks bigger and has windows, thus a lot brighter.. The first one will be depressing in the winter.

Purplehonesty · 21/07/2013 20:09

Number 1 for charm and character and being near the sea and number 2 for family long term home.
There you go, very helpful!

allotmentgirl82 · 21/07/2013 20:11

i prefer the first one as it has more character and if to your taste wouldn't need decorating.

Jaynebxl · 21/07/2013 20:27

I think I must be looking at a different link for house 1 cos it doesn't seem to have much character to me. The character seems to have been removed!

underthemountain · 21/07/2013 20:38

The other sold houses in the street in formby are listed as leasehold. Are there any implications when purchasing?

Hamwidgeandcheps · 21/07/2013 20:43

Number one for the location it's amazing. It's a bit footballers wives the decor but the kitchen is fab and the second house kitchen is knackered and replacing a kitchen is a whack of an expense. I don't like the front of the second one either.

ShimmeringInTheSun · 21/07/2013 21:07

I see the first one at the coast has views of the Anthony Gormley installation 'Another place'...which I absolutely fell in love with when I went to see it. It is a rather open space there, and on the day I went there was a vicious icy wind (in July) whipping along the coastline taking the sand with it. Not pleasant at all!

Detached

JustGiveMeFiveMinutes · 21/07/2013 22:58

I'm torn on this one. I know the areas very well. Not sure I'd ever want to live in Formby to be honest. The village is nice but the people [ hmm] Havimg said that I prefer house number 2.

formicadinosaur · 21/07/2013 23:01

Just having a peek at right move and there Are loads of hides in formby booth semis and detached. Have you looked at many?

JustGiveMeFiveMinutes · 21/07/2013 23:02

JustGiveMeFiveMinutes · 21/07/2013 23:07
