1st is a victorian terraced with a sea view but in a less "posh" area:

Second is modern detached in a naice area walking distance from the sea:

DH and I each have a preference so I turn to you to break the tie.

I hate no 1 sorry! The decor and layout are really horrible The 2nd house needs work but looks lovely and light. I generally love period houses but not in this case. The 2nd one could look great very plain and light.

sudointellectual · 20/07/2013 19:48

Agree that the interior layout is heinous in #1. But totally fixable...except for the restricted light issues, admittedly. You can't fix the outside of #2 or give it a sea view. I guess is the thing that is tipping people one way or the other.

myron · 20/07/2013 21:34

Location does it for me every time so number 2!

steppemum · 20/07/2013 21:46

I would find it hard to resist the sea view, and the extra bedroom.
But having not seen them, I suspect the second is more spacious downstairs, especially the kitchen

My Dad grew up in Crosby, and Granny lived there till she died, brings back memories Grin

Lizzabadger · 20/07/2013 21:51

No 1

Liara · 20/07/2013 21:56

Detached over terraced for me any day. I do have ishoos with neighbours and noise though, readily admit.

First is obviously better presented (OK, the wallpaper is hideous but it does look like it's been recently done up and taken care of) but I much prefer the layout of the second, I think it would be nicer to live in.

JugglingFromHereToThere · 20/07/2013 22:00

Probably no 1 as more character and closer to the sea, which would be lovely. Schools sound OK in both ?

cece · 20/07/2013 22:03

No1 is very tempting and I can see what someone would like it. Yes the sea views are fab. Yes the kitchen is lovely. However, for me what puts me off is the terrace location and also there looks like there is some sort of massive pavilion thing very close by at the end of the road. What is it? Obviously I have no local knowledge of area/schools which may sway a decision.

I would go for No. 2 out of the two properties shown. Mainly because it is detached and the rooms seem so much lighter and bigger. Plus the road looks 'nicer' to me.

Smartiepants79 · 20/07/2013 22:15

Very much depends on what matters to you.
House 1 has been done up to a high spec. Lovely views. Lovely kitchen extra bedroom.
But it has no potential to add value and no potential to make it 'yours'.
House 2 needs work but could be stunning and all 'yours'.
Good layout, good size, nice garden.
Do you want to do work or do you want to move into something done for you?

GettingVerySleepy · 20/07/2013 22:35

Cece that big building near 1 is the leisure centre with gym, swimming pool, etc.

Okay when I posted originally I was leaning towards 1 and that's the one most have said they prefer. Bizarrely, though, I have changed my mine to 2! Reasons are that it's detached so room to expand and make it ours plus would be nice and quiet, and has a big garden so room enough to add greenhouse, summer house etc in years to come. The sea view with 1 is stunning but its true there would be sand blowing about everywhere. And what if the council decided to erect a massive block of flats in front of 1 one day? After all we wouldn't own the view.

Mmm, I've always wanted a sea view.....but not sure I could live in a terraced house. Ok if your neighbours are quiet but if they play music loudly they'd drive you demented......I've been there!

How much time would you actually spend looking out the window/going and walking on the beach. Is it one of those things that the novelty might wear off after a while?

noddyholder · 20/07/2013 22:41

Good choice number one needs jut as much spending. The kitchen is horrible IMHO and the artex ceilings ad wallpaper stripping would take forever. 2nd one could be lovely and is very liveable as it is and just so much brighter.

noddyholder · 20/07/2013 22:44

Also no period features left in house one so no point having it really. Costs a lot to replace all the windows an doors etc with authentic ones.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 20/07/2013 22:45

The first one. Just because of picture 5.

Slainte · 20/07/2013 22:50

Detached would always win out for me.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 20/07/2013 22:51

Also number 2 is very close to the school. You'd need to check it out around drop-off / pick-up time to see if people park all over your drive.

willowstar · 20/07/2013 22:56

Number 2 because the rooms seem much bigger and overall it seems brighter.

Ponders · 20/07/2013 23:06

our house is mid-terrace & I would move to a detached in a heartbeat if I could! currently we have doer-uppers one side (hammer hammer drill drill aaargh) & previous residents there had a son with a massive stereo system aaargh

also I really like Formby, fab beach there when you want it & WAITROSE!!! what more could you ask for? those are decent-sized rooms & a nice garden (topiary things a bit weird but you could get rid Grin)

sea view ok on the occasional warm sunny summer's day but what about November-March?

NUMBER TWO!!!

cleopatrasasp · 20/07/2013 23:08

In all honesty I wouldn't pick either. Number two is rather soulless and number one seems to have a weird layout and little scope for adding value. Back to the drawing board might be the best idea.

xigris · 20/07/2013 23:10

I love Formby and have fantastic memories from there. That's probably not hugely helpful though! Personally would choose number 2

peggyblackett · 20/07/2013 23:16

1

SquinkiesRule · 21/07/2013 05:40

I'd say 2, detached and near good schools. Both need decorating and 1 seems odd. Nice to be able to walk right out to the water. But bitter cold in winter when the wind comes over the water and hits the houses.
I don't know the areas, but would go for schools and detached any day so long as the are a is a good one.

Mildpanic · 21/07/2013 06:24

No 2. I would go for detached if it was an option. Have lived in both and definitely prefer detached if could push the budget.
All the rooms look lighter and bigger in 2. The front in 1 seems a little claustrophobic to me.
Sea view is lovely when you go on holiday or out for the day, it would definitely lose it's appeal on a grey damp and windy day in winter.
2 seems to have a lot more scope for future improvement such as extension if that is something you may possibly want to do one day. 1 is pretty much limited, unless you went out the back to extend and house seems pretty thin any way.
Quirky is ok to a point, would it last over the years or would you feel it was an odd layout after time. We move into a house with "character" 6 years ago, against my gut feelings. 3 years and loads of work later I had to move as no matter what family etc said I bloodey hated the house. Could not cope with being it.
2 is pretty dated in cosmetic appeal so I think it has scope to look pretty amazing with a simple makeover in your choice of colours, fabrics and with your furniture in.
Would have to be 2 for me I 'm afraid.

buttercrumble · 21/07/2013 06:42

No 1 that view is amazing

Jaynebxl · 21/07/2013 08:00

I love period / character homes but number 1 isn't either of those things. We are just moving from a mid terrace Victorian house to a more modern detached and I can't wait. The only things missing from house 2 are the 4th bedroom (easily eemedied), the old people's decor (likewise) and the sea view (not a lot you can do about that!). I think house 2 is one you could easily make your mark on.
