Eek

We're moving into this house soon and the carpet is... noticeably patterned. We'll be knocking out a few walls next year so don't want to replace this carpet yet but dear god it's painful to look at. And it's in several rooms.

Is there any way to tone it down? At all? Maybe a lick of paint to the walls? Or the floor

Pannacotta I'll see what I can do. !

I'm in the camp that the living carpet could be a bold feature until you can change it if you styled the room right. Those curtains and the light fitting have to go - they are not helping at all. Everything else (apart from smal and intentional accessories)needs to be quite plain, smooth with minimal amount of flouncing. You could keep the serving hatch - maybe take the doors off it.

I'd rip it out of the bathroom and put down something else in that small area so that the living room could at least pass as a choice...

Or just spend more time in pubs...

I love that this thread has attracted over 50 posts!

I keep thinking about your carpet, OP. That is a very tragic statement in itself, and testimony to the profundity of my thought processes. My first impulse would definitely be to theme it in to a modern retro thing, but then i would end up spending just as much many on Ercol daybeds and white plastic light fittings as I would have on replacing the flooring. In fact, my kitchen ended up as dull as it is now because I incrementally changed things to cope with the expanses of red, and ended up obliterating the red and everything else a bit bland and dull.

So I'd be inclined to paint and style the room in line with your end vision, and just live with the carpet or cover it with a huge cheap rug from Ikea. It will make your teeth itch, but when the day comes and the bank manager allows it will all fall into place beautifully.

I've just realised that i didn't mention that we have kind of purply-aubergine coloured sofas. They will look awful with the carpet. Maybe some big cheap throws on the sofas and then continue with the previous plan for the carpet.

We have been in our house for 7 years now and are just about to remove the hideous green and orange tartan carpet from the lounge.

After we had lived with it for a while we became immune to its hideousness. We painted the stripy wallpaper in a creamy colour to make the room a tad more neutral.

I can't wait to see the back of it!!!!

If it's clean and not infested just put up with it - no one will think any the worse of you. Enjoy your renovations.

If you decide to go through the serving hatch and get stucknand need to ring the fore brigade, please make sure you do it in your swimming costume and post on AIBU Grin

TryDrawingAPicture · 02/09/2012 15:01

green and orange tartan ??? Heavens. If you could live with that then I'm sure I can deal with mine for a while.

when if I go through that hatch, I can be sure that dh will consider getting a photo to be more important than rescuing me when if I get stuck.

Mind you, our local fire brigade could do with a good laugh what with the cutbacks and all. If any of you fancy joining me for a little drunken serving hatch diving housewarming, I'm sure it'd make the local news be lovely.

You really will become immune to it! I no longer notice the holes in our sitting room walls, and really, that is surely more conspicuous than a carpet?

I'd save your money to cool your porridge, or whatever the old saying was.

TryDrawingAPicture · 03/09/2012 00:04
