Spectacular floral carpet - Help me MN!

Eek

We're moving into this house soon and the carpet is... noticeably patterned. We'll be knocking out a few walls next year so don't want to replace this carpet yet but dear god it's painful to look at. And it's in several rooms.

Is there any way to tone it down? At all? Maybe a lick of paint to the walls? Or the floor

If it's clean I'd live with it for a year.

Devora · 31/08/2012 09:17

I quite like the bathroom suite! Retro chic.

gazzalw · 31/08/2012 09:22

I've seen a lot worse. It looks good quality and as long as you ensure that you don't do 'busy' and mega-coloured with the rest of your decor think you could grow to like it!

gazzalw · 31/08/2012 09:24

Kind of reminds me of how our house looked when we moved in although think ours was in a worse state. Our carpet was totally threadbare though and smelled of rancid dog so it went to the dump as soon as we moved in....

I think your carpet could be a winner though - but not with the blue bathroom - hmmm!

What type of state is it in?

IceCubes · 31/08/2012 09:30

Yikes! You could get some cheap wood effect vinyl? It looks just fine on a living room floor when on a budget.

MackerelOfFact · 31/08/2012 09:32

Aww the tiles in the kitchen are the same as the ones we had in our bathroom when I was a kid and they looked outdated then. Grin

I actually don't mind the carpet that much. I bet if you took it all up and went and sold it to some 'vintage' home furnishings shop in Hackney you'd make enough to fund replacing it with something you like more!

Devora · 31/08/2012 09:33

The bathroom suite would look great with some retro vinyl flooring, like one of these: www.zazous.co.uk/retro-vinyl-flooring.htm

Devora · 31/08/2012 09:34

I'll tell you what would look very LivingEtc: pull up the carpet and use it to line the walls. Then pour concrete on the floor. Artfully arrange a few sheeps skulls and an old motorbike and you're done Grin

Caerlaverock · 31/08/2012 09:48

Snort @ decora

GrendelsMum · 31/08/2012 11:09

I can just see the LivingEtc photoshoot!

Mandy2003 · 31/08/2012 11:36

I LOVE pub carpet!!! Never thought of googling it before, there are some beauties on there Grin

RustyBear · 31/08/2012 11:45

I can lend you my DD if you like - within an unfeasibly short space of time the floor will be completely covered with towels...

LulaTheOneAndOnlyMrsPistorius · 31/08/2012 11:50

Oh my.

I would be tempted to buy a load of paint and turn that carpet into a Jackson Pollock-esque painting!

Those kitchen tiles are the so-called "chicken" tiles by Johnson. They're quite sought after and go for around £5 per tile on Ebay.

LittleMilla · 31/08/2012 12:25

I don't think it's too bad, but I know what it's like moving in to somewhere new and feeling Hmm and multiple things but not knowing where to spend the ££

I'm currently carpet shopping and wondered what size your room is? If it's not too big you might be able to get an off-cut for

Dropdeadfred · 31/08/2012 12:37

Sorry but I would replace it as cheaply as possible

onesandwichshort · 31/08/2012 12:59

I clicked on this thread because I'm actually looking for a massively floral carpet (yes really) and thought that perhaps someone else was too. So you won't be entirely surprised to learn that I rather like it, even if it's possibly a bit bright even for me.

But I don't think I'm entirely on my own and I do think these kind of carpets will come back into fashion quite soon - Sophie Conran has just done some floral Axminsters for John Lewis.

I wouldn't go for a beige with that, but a slightly pinkier new plaster colour, plain sofa, a million patterned cushions in bright pink, brown and red. I'd be quite happy with that.

Sossiges · 31/08/2012 14:49

If you're feeling sick after one too many and want to throw up so that the room will stop spinning and you'll be able to go to sleep, then Google "pub carpet" images. That should do the trick, there are some real beauties on there. (I hasten to add, nothing like the OP's carpet which I rather like.)

mistressploppy · 31/08/2012 14:53

Me too, onesandwich! Blush

I quite like it, I think it's cool; like a room from Pulp album cover photo or something Grin. I'd go neutralish walls and mid century furniture of poss.

TryDrawingAPicture · 31/08/2012 18:56

Do you know, i think it's starting to grow on me. It's actually not in bad nick, quite springy.

So new plan:

  1. see if I can learn to love it once the walls are painted
  2. contact Living Etc to arrange a photoshoot
  3. use proceeds to redecorate

The mustard shagpile upstairs has to go though. No amount of cleaning will suffice.

I think changing the curtains and light fitting would really help with the carpet.

Are you going to add a photo of you getting stuck in the serving hatch soon? Grin

DorothyGherkins · 31/08/2012 19:09

Get black permanent markers and invite your guests to doodle on the carpet.

LadyHarrietdeSpook · 01/09/2012 02:25

That carpet is AMAZING!!!

But I can see how you're panicking with whatever furniture you might have (oooh maybe I shouldn't have said that...you were just focused on paint.) As much as I would love to explore retroness for a while, it would be insane with our furniture. And I suspect is with many people's these days...

The thing about the floor coverings is I agree it could draw attention to the floor as anopther poster said but you could consider some near furniture that the carpet doesn't match with AT ALL, if this applies...if you see what I mean...

oh I dunno, it's too late now.

Feckbox · 01/09/2012 02:43

I like that carpet!

Feckbox · 01/09/2012 02:46

B&Q do stick on black and white floortiles that are as cheap as chips, and look absolutely fantastic laid in a chequerboard pattern. You can cut them to size with decent scissors.

I've used them in 3 bathrooms; everyone admires them.

They'd look great in your loo if you replace the loo seat with a black one.

Pannacotta · 01/09/2012 08:51

Ohhh Feckbox those floor tiles sound good, any chance of a pic on your profile?

We have a little utility room and I was stuck on the flooring, but am tempted by your idea...
