Am I the only one who hates en suite bathrooms?

Why would you want you DH/DP to hear you going to the loo? I just don't get itConfused

LOL, I had an ensuite in one house I lived in, and it was at least a decent size (converted "dressing room" in an older house, I think) but yes, you're right, mostly you can smell hear what's going on. I do prefer a separate room, tbh.

Goingspare · 20/11/2010 22:44

Ours is sandwiched between our bed and DD1's (3 separate rooms, obviously). DD's head is about 3 feet from the en-suite loo when she's in bed. Modern house, too many rooms for the space. Over-rated.

lalalonglegs · 20/11/2010 22:47

Don't get them, refuse to have one. Just about acceptable if it is an existing room that is converted but unforgivable when it eats into the corner of a really well-proportioned period room or a room that is much too small for one in the first place.

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 20/11/2010 22:48

well I don't have an ensuite - but DS1's bedroom is right next to the bathroom and he can hear everything........

llareggub · 20/11/2010 22:48

I have one and I hate it. We rarely use the loo but do use the bathroom. If it wasn't for the fact that an extra bathroom is so handy I'd rip it out and enjoy a bigger bedroom and more storage instead.

llareggub · 20/11/2010 22:49

Gah, I meant we rarely use the loo but use the shower.

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 20/11/2010 22:52

Mind you, it was handy being so close to the loo the day I discovered that the "cranberry juice" I had been drinking for cystitis was actually 50% apple juice (which gives me the shits...)

TMI, sorry. Blush It was a hellish Saturday afternoon, though, curled up in bed with a hot water bottle.

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 20/11/2010 22:52

I don't get it either.

Unless it's huge, well sound proofed and you've got a massive house.

Even then, either you'll be woken up by the sound of your DH closing the door in the middle of the night, or by the sound of him peeing.

So on conclusion..... no.

GrantchesterMeadows · 20/11/2010 23:06

I think they're pointless. We never use ours during the night. I would much rather have a seperate additional bathroom/shower room.

Clayhead · 20/11/2010 23:07

I love ours

[feels lonely]

TheNextMrsDepp · 20/11/2010 23:10

I love ours too (but there is a little "lobby" between the two rooms so no unappealing sound-effects).

Having lived for 11 years in a cottage with a solitary downstairs bathroom it's an absolute luxury not having to stumble through the whole house.

NoseyNooNoo · 21/11/2010 09:17

We're in our new house that has an en-suite. I've never liked the idea. It is nice in the morning for linking the washing/dressing parts of the getting up process. However, I seriously do not want to hear my husband farting on the loo of an evening (and vice versa) so we tend to use the loo in the family bathroom if the other is in bed.

So here's a vote for 'over-rated'.

ChasingSquirrels · 21/11/2010 09:30

I like having one.
Never bothered me about using it when ex-h was in bedroom, or him doing so when I was.
Also have downstairs loo and loo in main bathroom - I rarely use either of those loos, mostly come upstairs to my en-suite.

ragged · 21/11/2010 09:40

I hate them too, I don't want to share the sounds of my business with others, either! They make the bedroom steamy and probably smelly, it means the household as well as visitors quite often traipsing thru your bedroom just to use a toilet (if other one is out of commission or in use, which let's face it, they often are). Stoopid idea, imho.

Dolittlest · 21/11/2010 09:42

Not a fan, either.

SpotSplatterSplash · 21/11/2010 09:49

Ooh I love ours, but it's not near any other rooms and has a good thick door Smile

DisparityCausesInstability · 21/11/2010 09:49

We've had one in previous houses and we have loved them - the main bathroom rarely got used.
We're about to put 2 into our house, one for us and one for the guest room.

purepurple · 21/11/2010 09:52

I don't like them either. I really don't need to hear DH in the loo, and he really doesn't need to hear me.

CerealOffender · 21/11/2010 09:52

we have one, but it is more of a bathroom that happens to come off the bedroom tbh.

i have always thought they were nuts but now if we have guests it is nice to have the privacy and our own bathroom

Appletrees · 21/11/2010 09:53

I hate them too! So bourgeois.

BeenBeta · 21/11/2010 09:54

They are a real godsend at night if you have a dodgy bladder but DW does tend to see our ensuite as her sanctuary as me and DSs wander about desecrating every other bathroom in the house during the day.

lillybloom · 21/11/2010 09:55

I love mine.Like Nosey, i think it makes getting dressed in the mornings easier.

Itsjustafleshwound · 21/11/2010 09:57

I love ours - there is a formula of 1 bathroom per every 2 rooms and we converted our loft into a bedroom, walk in cupboard and bathroom. If we didn't do this it would mean that we would have to run downstairs to shower or bath.

I spend very little time in the bathroom - 30 mins max a day, and really what do you think happens behind closed bathroom doors???

piscesmoon · 21/11/2010 10:05

I love it-would hate to be without.

trixymalixy · 21/11/2010 12:30

I love ours. Was especially good when pregnant and getting up in the night to wee
