Am I the only one who hates en suite bathrooms?

Why would you want you DH/DP to hear you going to the loo? I just don't get itConfused

I thought I was the only one who didn't like them. When I was househunting this time last year, we saw so many houses with small bedrooms, zero storage space, in order to accommodate ensuites. One newly refurbished four-bed house we saw had FOUR ensuites - all carved out of already modest bedrooms. I made a comment to the estate agent, who responded sniffily: "I've never heard anyone complain about too many bathrooms". Can that be right? Apart from the space issue, who would want to have to clean all those toilets?

higgle · 22/11/2010 11:01

Wehave en-suites to our main bedroom and the guest bedroom. It is great for your guests to have their own facilities and with 2 sons at home all our 3 shower/bathrooms get plenty of use. I really hate going to stay with friends when their is only a family bathroom as I'm really relucant to use it in case I'm inconveniencing them.

Bunbaker · 22/11/2010 12:51

MIL only has one bathroom and no extra loo, and she always bathes or showers in the morning. There is always one of us who is sitting with legs crossed tightly by the time she gets out

Ormirian · 22/11/2010 12:55

I just think it's daft when they are building a house on an already tiny plot, to reduced the space even more with 2 bathrooms.

NorbertDentressangle · 22/11/2010 13:01

Its interesting that so many people don't like them.

I've never had one and never wanted one.

I always presumed though that other people liked them as they're always made such a thing of in estate agent details and even pokey little new-build houses squeeze them in.

SuePurblybiltByElves · 22/11/2010 13:07

Hate them. Poky little poo holes next to your bedroom, yuck.
I'd rather have a main bathroom and a downstairs loo.

brimfull · 22/11/2010 13:11

Love ours , tis a decent size shower/bathroom and not close to bed really and the door shuts so I can't hear anything .

A godsend when there are guests staying.

Bunbaker · 22/11/2010 13:17

"Poky little poo holes next to your bedroom, yuck."

Ours isn't. Our en-suite is as far away from the bed as possible, has its own extractor fan and window and is large enough to accommodate a shower, loo, wash basin and two built in wardrobes. Bedroom space isn't compromised by the en-suite as it is built over the entrance lobby in a part of the house that juts out.

In any case it is the main bathroom and downstairs toilet that are used mostly. The en-suite loo only gets used if we have a house full, but it is nice to have and came in very useful when I picked up a basty D & V bug and didn't want anyone else to get it.

stringbean · 22/11/2010 13:48

I don't really get them although have never had one. However, either dh or I are always up early for work, so an en-suite would be really intrusive. We had a downstairs loo and shower put into our old house and it made much more sense. We could shower without disturbing anyone else if we had an early start, get the kettle on, dress in peace and quiet. We've moved house now and need to put in rooms upstairs (it's a bungalow), but have been discussing whether we actually want an en-suite for the reasons given above - and I think the answer will be no.

higgle · 22/11/2010 15:06

And another thing! I work in the care sector and the lucky older people who do have them have far more dignity than those who have to rely on a commode - which some poor person has to carry around and empty for them!

WildPansy · 22/11/2010 15:18

I think if I lived alone I would revise my views -- definitely the idea of getting ready in the sanctuary of one's bedroom has its appeal. I just don't want someone else doing it Grin.

bunnymother · 22/11/2010 15:22

We had one and loved it - could chat while getting ready, quick dash for post coital shower. What's not to love? If any nasty bombs needed to be dropped, used the main bathroom.

PuppyMonkey · 22/11/2010 15:29

You are all loons! Grin

Are you really so hung up about pooing and weeing???

StealthPomBear · 22/11/2010 15:35

What do you lot do when you stay in hotels?
Although I do agree with them being the new big thing in housebuilding - our last house was TINY, didn't have a cupboard but did have an ensuite Hmm

Indith · 22/11/2010 15:40

Not keen on them either, I odn't really understand this new build 3 bed, 4 bath plus downstairs loo and an extra guest bath crammed in somewhere thing. I wouldn't complain if someone would shift some walls around and give us an upstairs bathroom though instead of downstairs and all the way through the house to the end of the freezing extension though!

nickypomtimes · 22/11/2010 15:43

I hate them.

My old house had a dressing room instead of an en suite.

I don't want the stench of dh's shite wafting through the bedroom.

ApocalypseCheese · 22/11/2010 15:48

My brother has four bathrooms and a loo downstairs they had installed when their dd was small, really don't see the point, their was only him, his wife and dd living there at the time, and now it's him and his girlfriend. Although his house is large, the thought of cleaning all those loos makes me shudder.

He's the same with phones, he has 8 of them (4 for the rooms downstairs and 4 for upstairs) get off ya arse and walk I say

RubberDuck · 22/11/2010 15:49

I love mine.

But then I have two sons whose aim is terrible, so it is my sanctuary - the one bathroom where I don't have to be awake and wary about puddles.

brimfull · 22/11/2010 15:53

they must have a window in them
and not be miniscule

hmmSleep · 22/11/2010 16:00

I don't think I would buy a house without one, but then I'm very lazy. Can't believe people would rather go traipsing round the dark cold house at night just so their Dh doesn't hear them wee! I also love having a bathroom that is just for Dh and myself, I am obviously lazy and selfish.

fruitful · 22/11/2010 16:03

I don't like them in houses that clearly need the extra space - you know, 4 beds, 3 baths, but you have to take it in turns to stand up in the bedrooms.

And I'd much rather have 2 bathrooms than a bathroom and an en-suite bathroom. I suppose the en-suite one is nice when you've got guests, but these days all my guests have small children so we all sit around in dressing gowns watching cbeebies and drinking extra-strong coffee for about 3 hours before making it to the shower (at 8am) anyway. Privacy and small children don't seem to mix.

My main gripe with housebuilders' obsession with bathrooms, is all the cleaning. If a house has 4 toilets, people will use them all, and guess who will have to clean them all? Pah! I'd padlock 'em ...

notyummy · 22/11/2010 16:05

I like them, and it was one of the factors we looked for in our current house. It is tiny and has bath and shower. We also have a family bathroom and a downstairs loo. We often have family/friends to stay, and it is nice that everyone isn't waiting to use the facilities in the morning. Obviously we would cope without - both of us grew up in a house with one bathroom....but tastes/aspirations change I think.

fruitful · 22/11/2010 16:05

StealthPom, the ensuite in our last house used to get used as a cupboard. Boxes in the shower tray, stuff piled on the loo seat.

You couldn't actually use the shower at the same time as the one in the main bathroom anyway, 'cos the boiler couldn't produce enough hot water at one time.

WildPansy · 22/11/2010 16:12

Yep, the boiler thing often seems to mean you can't use them at the same time anyway. At my parents' place you have to shout to check that it's OK to use one of the showers. Otherwise you find yourself standing there in the buff, about to turn the knob, and then MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM, you hear the pump going because someone got there first, and have to just stand there all goosey silently cursing them.

mousymouse · 22/11/2010 16:25

or the washing mashine running at the same time.
if I want a spa treatment, I go to a spa not my shower Grin
