Am I the only one who hates en suite bathrooms?

Why would you want you DH/DP to hear you going to the loo? I just don't get itConfused

minibmw2010 · 21/11/2010 12:35

I love ours, though I have had to encourage DH that if he thinks the room is going to smell afterwards to please use the main bathroom so we don't have a nasty smelling bedroom. We have seperate shower-rooms and that makes life very easy in the morning.

create · 21/11/2010 12:41

I don't have one. Ours is a decent sized 60's built house, so before they became popluar. Most people have squeezed on into a corner of the main bedroom, but it doesn't really work.

I'd never thought of the toilet noises (TBH I can still hear DH in the bathroom at the other end of the landing Shock ) but doesn't effectively showering in your bedroom make everything damp from the steam?

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 21/11/2010 12:48

No I don't really like them. They are a teensy bit try-hard. Agree about the damp & steam. I like rooms to be separate and distinct so they fulfill their different purposes. A dressing room is a much better use of the space (Le Corbusier said that it was total madness to dress in the same room you sleep in Grin)

That said, we still have an outside privvy. Blush

DaisySteiner · 21/11/2010 12:52

Don't see the need for one in our house as our bedroom is right next to the bathroom anyway! But as another poster said, we used to have a downstairs toilet only, so not having to go downstairs in the night is a luxury full stop.

Portofino · 21/11/2010 12:53

I'm not crazy on them either. In our last apartment the loo was about 3 foot from my side of the bed! In our current house, we have a loo downstairs, a separate toilet upstairs then a shower room with washbasin and a bathroom with bath and 2 washbasins. It is great combination and means that when we have visitors there is no fight over bathroom space.

mumblechum · 21/11/2010 13:00

We have an ensuite, but to the guest room, and we use the second biggest room specifically because, as dh charmingly commented, "Who wants to listen to the other person taking a crap before they come to bed for rumpy pumpy?"

In hotels, I quite often don't like the fact that the fan automatically goes on when you switch the light on, waking the other person.

Meglet · 21/11/2010 13:02

I wish I had one - and the bigger house to go with it.

My walls are so thin I can hear the toilet paper being torn off through my bedroom wall.

kittens · 21/11/2010 13:02

We have one with each bedroom!! Its fab you never have to use the same loo as anyone else. If you're ensuite has a window you leave it open and its gets rid of any unwanted smells and steam from the shower that the extractors can't cope with.
I couldn't imagine living in a house without one, it also means we can all shower and get ready together in the morning. I grew up in house of 9 people and 1 bathroom hence why we have so many bathrooms!!!

mousymouse · 21/11/2010 13:19

we have an en-suite showerroom and it is a bit silly as its only a two bed flat and has a quite large family bathroom already.
I admit having 2 loos is nice but I would rather have a laundry room or extra storage. we have to use the en-suite because the family bathroom hasn
t got a shower.

randomimposter · 21/11/2010 13:30

I have 2 sets of friends who have independently (they don't know each other) done a loft conversion with bedroom/bathroom combo. Nothing that unusual there you might think, except both chose to do open-plan bathroom facilities... literally no door separating the sleeping/shitting bits... (one had a slight split level, the other a low-level wall divider (but literally thigh height).... do I attract weirdos OR WHAT!!?? ConfusedHmm

Bunbaker · 21/11/2010 13:41

Ours comes in very useful, especially when we have guests. It is nice having two bathrooms and a downstairs loo.

I suffer from IBS and wouldn't even contemplate buying a house with only one bathroom.

Our en-suite has an extractor fan and a window that opens so the steam/smell isn't a problem. All we do is open the en-suite window and close the door from the bedroom.

We use the house bathroom for middle of the night visits as it doesn't wake either of us up. Also the en-suite has a cold tiled floor and the house bathroom is carpeted and is much warmer underfoot. The main bathroom has a bigger shower and also a bath so it gets used most of the time anyway.

I caught a nasty D & V bug from hospital once - DD had had it and passed it on to me. By remaining in the bedroom and en-suite I managed to contain it and neither OH or his mum, who was staying with us at the time, caught it.

Our last house had a two bathrooms, neither of which was en-suite, so I'm not bothered about the second one being en-suite, as long as there is a second bathroom.

notpartofthelifeplan · 21/11/2010 13:45

I would love one. I used to live with dh's family and there were 7 adults living in the same house with only one bathroom and it was hell. Once everyone left home they decided to add ensuites to the two main bedrooms, I wish they had done this before!

They have cut into the existing bedrooms and it looks fine it doesn't make the rooms look too small.

pirateparty · 21/11/2010 13:53

I'd love one. But we only have one loo which is in the family bathroom, so I'd pick having a downstairs loo over an en-suite. It would be so useful, but it would cost so much and mean digging up the kitchen floor.

WildPansy · 21/11/2010 15:31

I really hate them. I also think they've become a weird fetish in new builds. We looked round a 4-bed, 4-bath new house which had an ensuite hacked out of the corner of every bedroom except one. The 'master' bedroom didn't even have enough room for a wardrobe. The logic of that really eludes me.

franke · 21/11/2010 15:46

We have an en suite shower room. Could I live without it? Probably.

LornMowa · 21/11/2010 17:52

I am really pleased we don't have one. My husband gets up around 6 every morning and I would hate it if he showered (and the rest) just the other side of a thin partition wall, while I was still dozing.

Only really worth it if you live in a huge house with proper walls.

My dc's school just keeps on calling me Mrs Dc's name - even though every cheque, every note, every communication, every time I volunteer and that's a least once a week, my name is being used Ms my name not Mrs Dc's name.

After 3 years you'd expect them to catch on - maybe they're observational skills along with their listening and memory skills are poor...but part of me wonders whether they have decided they disapprove of my attention seeking, overbearing, aggressive, modern ways and have decided given they are a school they should teach me a lesson that my mother should have taught me a long time ago.Grin

Thankfully we've moved house and school now - and oddly the new school got my name immediately.

Laquitar · 21/11/2010 21:12

I would only use the shower.
I would tape or glue the loo seat down.

AnnoyingOrange · 21/11/2010 21:19

I like our ensuite.

The children use the main bathroom, dh and I use the ensuite

hifi · 21/11/2010 21:23

we have 2,the dds have one.we are very open about our ablutions in our house so don't mind.have another loo as well, its a major hoo ha on holiday when we only have one loo.

Quattrocento · 21/11/2010 21:27

I like en-suite bathrooms. Which is fortunate because every bedroom in the house now has one. It saves queuing for a solitary bathroom, the risk of bumping into guests on the landing late at night, everyone is assured privacy, everyone can have a shower AT THE SAME TIME if they want to. So hurray for multiple bathrooms.

Now I have my bedroom all to myself, I love my ensuite.

It wasn't so pleasant on Sunday mornings when ex-h used to bring me breakfast in bed then disappear into the ensuite for a noisy crap.

DisparityCausesInstability · 21/11/2010 22:07

Oops I posted on the wrong thread - please excuse Blush

Brasso4 · 21/11/2010 22:18

We don't have one. We have a family bathroom upstairs and a shower room downstairs. It works well for us. I like the fact that when we have visitors we can all use both bathrooms, without guests having to tramp through our bedroom (one less room to tidy and clean Blush) We have a sink in our bedroom, which is great for teeth brushing and face washing etc. I don't think I would swap this arrangement now.
