waitrose vs tesco - shock!

this week i ordered my first waitrosedeliver order, I compared my tesco delivery bill with this waitrose bill for the same items.

tesco worked out as £64.88...waitrose as 62.75 for the same branded and own brand products. what was interesting was that the tesco prices were cheaper for most products but were they were more expensive (8 products) they were a LOT more expensive.

if i changed one branded product to an own brand product (babywipes) then the tesco bill did come down to £58.76

I did use the waitrose code for £15 off your first two shops for new customers....its save15

(and the delivery charge at tesco was only 25p cheaper but the waitrose frozen stuff was still frozen!)

it really surprised me how similar the prices were over a whole shop despite tesco trumpeting their value for money credentials. I didn't buy any of waitrose's expensive ready meals though maybe that's the rub?

OOh, thats interesting, as I have been wondering whether to use my Ocado codes and have been put off thinking it would be too expensive...

Interesting. I've always felt that if you only buy raw ingredients rather than ready made up food then Waitrose is the same as Tescos pricewise and (at least round here) a lot nicer to go round. But I found Ocado more trouble than it was really worth.

What did you find troublesome about Ocado Mrsqboring?

I only use Ocado as I found the customer service and delivery standards of Tesco so poor (really badly packed and delivered by surly bugger who dumped stuff on my doorstep despite obvious pregnancy). The Ocado staff practically put the stuff away for you.

I was told by a friend that Ocado/Waitrose have said they will match/beat Tesco for prices of branded goods (eg Vanish, Persil etc).

I've used both Ocado and WaitroseDeliver and been really happy with both. I always used to think Waitrose were really expensive, but I pricechecked with Sainsburys before we swapped (after some disastrous Sainsbury's orders, including them turning up with only half the shop on 23rd December one year!) and there wasn't a lot of difference for what we were buying. Waitrose online is cheaper than going to Waitrose shops because you don't get tempted to spend ££££s on tasty looking quiches and dips and stuff!

ocado don't deliver here but waitrose do. I shop with tesco though because A I have never had any problems with their deliveries etc, and B their site has been made specifically accessible - I am registered to the access portion of the site which means no graphics etc to confuse my screenreader.

Waitrose is completely inaccessible and in fact is one of the few sites I know of which just isn't accessible and I therefore refuse to use them on principle.

ocado price match tesco, it tells you next to the product if they are tesco price matched. It changes weekly so one week you buy something for £1 as its price matched but the week after it could be back to £1.50 as its not price matched that week

I'm sure I could have been more efficient setting up shopping lists and a routine of booking slots, but I just found it a huge pain finding slots and booking them, and also ordering fruit and veg. I had their box once which was good but packaged up to the nth degree. I found the vast number of plastic bags dispiriting.

I do agree that Ocado are very helpful at bringing in the shopping etc.

I now use Abel and Cole - box comes once a week and you don't have to be in. I have my milk, bread, cheese and eggs for the week on regular weekly order and a rolling regular order for meat and fish. All I have to do is put the boxes out on a Mon evening and put the shopping away on a Tues morning and there's virtually no packaging. It's a bit dearer because all organic, but I buy organic meat and dairy anyway (and use it as a discipline to use less)

Wish I got clubcard points though. But going round Tescos sets my teeth on edge - the store is massive and full of jangly advertising. Never tried the website.

Mrsq I use abel as well on a weekly basis and order from Waitrose once a month for other staples - I find it a good balance. Ocado take their plastic bags (from the last delivery like A&C) away with them when they deliver now.

If I were organised, Bigmouth, that's what I would do too - with a regular list for cereal, cleaning stuff tins etc. But DS actually likes going to the shops it turns out so I don't. Also, would probably die of shame if I saw this family's monthly cereal intake laid out in one place.

I know they take the bags back now, but AFAIK they don't reuse them (for hygiene reasons) but just recycle them which still strikes me as a bit wasteful.

Waitrose are currently cross with Ocado for doing the Tesco price match on branded goods - it's brought the prices down to below what they are in Waitrose shops.

John Lewis owns only 28% of Ocado, so they are free to discount like that, but it makes the Waitrose people at John Lewis a bit cross.

Apparently Ocado want to expand into areas where Waitrose Deliver is currently operating, lots of friction there too.

Have wondered how Waitrose Deliver and Ocado were hoping to co-exist.

Four big advantages to Ocado ime. Comes from warehouse, so nice long shelf-life. Will tell you immediately if an item is not available so you can make your own substitution, Tesco price-match for lots of items. Delivery free or very cheap if you can be flexible.

So why would I want to change to Waitrose Deliver? But, as importantly, why would John Lewis want Ocado to continue?

Well apparently Ocado has the right to convert Waitrose Deliver customers to Ocado customers.

The thinking is that Waitrose Deliver will do areas that Ocado doesn't cover - because Ocado is warehouse picked, but Waitrose Deliver is picked in store, there are lots of areas that have a local Waitrose but aren't covered by Ocado.

Ocado has a very different business model - they worked out that the bulk of the transport costs involved in food delivery are caused by the last leg from warehouse to store. So by delivering direct from the warehouse, they can offer savings on Waitrose goods, if that makes sense?

Have just done shop online with Ocado, found it harder to get around site, but with 15% discount very reasonable and loving that the delivery slot was an hour window!
I am stupidly excited now.....

i love waitrose, my shop does work out cheaper than with sainsburys. the quality of food is so much better. i love their sandwich ham its the same price as sainsburys but doesnt have any added water (sainsbuys were 30% water), i have a pregnancy craving for it. the waitrose delivery people are more help an they are well packed and they take all my bags away to recycle.
i like that the online shop is smaller as i dont have to go through loads of stuff to get to what i want. they have loads of local fruit and veg as well.

If you get there 10 - 11pm slot on thursday evening it is free and they always come at around 9.50pm so you don't have to stay up so you save £5 on getting shopping from Sainsburys or Tesco that way as you don;t have to pay a delivery charge!

Whenever I've tried Ocado they don't sell stuff I use lots of (or they're out of stock all the time), or it's a more expensive premium range (eg chopped canned tomatoes, water-free ham). So the shop ends up costing more. And I don't want their freebies.

If I book the Tesco 9-11pm slot a couple days in advance they always turn up at 9 or earlier (after phoning), and they always carry everything into my kitchen and help unload. I get the delivery without bags, too.

Could just be the local chaps being helpful - the local Sainsburys delivery is useless!
Might use Ocado again for delivery of fancy food for Christmas - most people in our fmaily get booze and chocolate for presents!

If you speak to someone at occadro they normally will chuck in a free bottle of wine!

Also once you have ordered from them they send you mails with special offers just for you ie half price lou rolls that you bought last time, less than half price eggs I bought last time plus normally get a vocuher for some thing free next time with each shop
