Wondered if hand holding for Sept newbies would be nice?

Just that really. Like an antenatal thread but for parents of children starting primary in Sept.

We have our taster afternoon in a couple of weeks - it all feels so alien. Haven't felt this out of it since I bought my 1st pack of nappies and got the giggles at the checkout!

Lt - nightmare! Do M&S delivery to wherever you are?

simpson · 27/06/2009 21:00

Oooh yes Rourke. Mmmmm...

Littlewoods direct seems quite good too and I got some discount codes on MN for delivery etc.

LtEveDallas · 27/06/2009 21:09

Tree - No, sadly they dont - M&S do have shops out here (Cyprus) but its all REALLY expensive, some things are like twice the price. I have looked at Littlewoods and like a lot of the stuff but it didnt say anything about BFPO deliveries so I have emailed customer services.

What I thought I could do was order it all and get it posted to my mums, but lots of shops only deliver to the registered card address - and of course my card is registered over here......

Adams do however deliver over here, so I'm going to have a nosy at their site later on.

(was very happy that shoesforkids will deliver here - not so happy that on their 'school shoes' page they had 2 pink pairs, so of course DD is now moaning because I said she had to have black )

treedelivery · 27/06/2009 21:19

Maybe your mum would buy the items for you and store them till you arrive? Or someother friend or relation? I have bought stuff at M&S and had it delivered elsewhere, but I don't know if the same could happen if your account is registered overseas.

The 3months to return is brilliant imo - it means I can get clothes in both sizes to allow for a growth spurt.

See now I know I am being childish but now I really feel stupid having been so roundly ignored.

LtEveDallas · 27/06/2009 21:37

I am thinking of asking her to do that, she likes shopping - so it would be fun for her (rather than hell for me!). Mind you she will prob spend all her time going 'ooooh thats so expensive, I'm sure Bon Marche will do it for half the price' and then get me what she thinks rather than what I want!

I have just discovered that Asda will deliver out here - pity I dont like anything on the website (sods law again) and Admas doesnt have anything out as yet.

I like the Littlewoods stuff best so far, so hopefully they will send out to me (or let me send to mums)

Right I'm going to take my stress head off to bed - didnt sleep till 2 last night worrying and was up at 0530.....bloody DH sleeping like a baby (...lion snoring)

Night all

simpson · 27/06/2009 21:40

yes and most of asda littleys school uniform out of stock. Grrr....

was looking earlier for boys age 3 trousers.

FatGirlThin · 27/06/2009 21:41

Actually I am geniunely quite worried about this. I really hate being alone. I know it is pathetic but I can't help it I have always worked until I had children. Now I work part time and to be honest can't manage any more in terms of work but stillll

LtEveDallas · 27/06/2009 21:41

Ohh fatgirlthin, wasnt ignoring you, was just up my own moany arse as usual going to bed now to dream about removals and packing and money and cars and uniforms and and and.......

FatGirlThin · 27/06/2009 21:42

Night, Dallas, sorry about your uniform worries. Sounds like you might be on the road to fixing them though

simpson · 27/06/2009 21:44

fatgirlthin - think I will be worse actually when DD (17mths) starts school than with DS as she is my baby and always with me iyswim.

Also I didn't go back to work after having her and won't work till she is at school.

FatGirlThin · 27/06/2009 21:45

I'm moving too, may actually be homeless (not sleeping under bridges homeless but camping out with relatives homeless) when new term starts! It's very llooooong and complicated but you have my sympathies. I can however buy uniform!

blametheparents · 27/06/2009 21:45

I don't think Adams do schooolwear any more, sorry

treedelivery · 27/06/2009 21:49

Sorry FatGirlThin!

I bet you get used to free time very quickly indeed, and the house will sparkle and smell of baking. I can send you round a 6 month grump if you find yourself at your wits end however.

OP posts:
simpson · 27/06/2009 21:54

yes and you can have a 17mth old grump too

lollyheart · 27/06/2009 21:55

My dd will be 4.10, she can dress herself, loves to write, draw, she knows her letters and numbers, the only problem is she cant wipe her bum, well she tries but makes a mess of it.

I sill have'nt brought her uniform, i better get a move on if shops are running out already.

She has had 3 visits and has 2 left.

She starts on the 7th part time, 8.40 till 11.45, my ds starts preschool on the same day, they both finish at 11.45, im not sure how im going to be in 2 places at the same time.

FatGirlThin · 27/06/2009 21:55

LOL! I'll take up the baking but I think I'm done with babies (except for when they are sleepy and snuggly, then they are irresistable)

FatGirlThin · 27/06/2009 21:56

Maybe I should start a creche?! Free childcare for stressed mumsnetters - payment will be staying for coffee with sad mumnetter, homebaked goodies as a perk

Problem solved!

swissmiss · 27/06/2009 22:00

Hi to all the newbies.

Tried DS's school trousers on today. Way, way too long (age 5) but good on the waist. I'll just have to save my sewing skills for turn ups!

A quick tip for using the taggits, the instructions say put the pin thru the garment label then the name tape on top then finish off with the washer. Problem is the pin is a clear plastic and quite smooth/flush but the washer is white/curved so it obscures any writing and is a bit rough to touch. So where ever poss. I've taken to using them in reverse iyswim with the pin head closes to the skin. Also where I don't want to fold the label, to have his whole name visible e.g. on his logoed reversible raincoat/fleece I've just stuck a taggit at each end. Works really well. If you get one in the wrong place just use some nail scissors to snip them off. Can you tell what DS and I were doing this afternoon!!!!

treedelivery · 27/06/2009 22:02

Excellent!

We could knit/make bunting/drink g&t's....

lollyheart your dd has had lots of visits, thats really good. Wish we had.

OP posts:
swissmiss · 27/06/2009 22:13

Sounds like a good plan FGT. Sod the knitting and bunting Tree, lets just stick to the G&Ts!

Like Lolly we have loads of settling in, every Monday am, 2hrs for whole of summer term! Mind you we only got a place mid-May so have only got half a term's worth (and it costs £5 per session) but I'm glad as I know he'll be well settled in. Also got the same issue with needing to be in 2 places at once. DS @ school and DD @ pre-school both at 8.45 but they are 3.5miles apart! I've spoken to pre-school who said that "big" school takes priority and DD will get there when I get there. Also in the afternoons I've only got 15mins between collections which will make for a mad dash back down the country lanes, only then for me not to be able to find a parking space near pre-school.

lollyheart · 27/06/2009 22:13

Those taggits look good, i might get some but the writing will be very small, she has a 6 letter 1st name and a 11 letter surname.

simpson · 27/06/2009 22:20

am being totally thick but how does a taggit work??

Do you have to sew them in?

Have ordered name tags for DS.

Another thing to tick off list

swissmiss · 27/06/2009 22:20

Lolly I've just done initial for first name plus last name. Actually I've done:
1st initial DD2. 2nd initial DD2/1st initial DD1. LASTNAME 1st initial DS.
(if that made any sense)all in caps - so no I'm not trying to shout!
I only need to fold the tapes depending on which child I'm tagging for and don't have 3 sets of tapes. It's not like with an 11 letter lastname her stuff will get confused with anyone elses name. I'm taking a bit of a risk as our lastname is not that uncommon but he's only at a small village school, which the girls'll follow him to.
