unconditional parents- how do you deal with reward systems in school??

ds1 is due to start school in september and on my big list of "things to worry about" is the kind of reward systems they may (or may not) use.

I have heard about schools using reward charts for good behaviour, and in some cases even having things like a smiley face chart on the wall where a child who "misbehaves" gets an unhappy face stuck up. or gets their name moved from a sunshine to a grey cloud.

I was just wondering how you deal with this really??? do your kids just accept that school have a different way of dealing with things? do you feel pressured to do it at home too?

It seems to be good to be visible though mg.

yep, you get more stickers!!!!!

sorry, but I can really tell when ds 1 has been 'interesting' at school. He gets stickers for a bit then they stop when he's being good.

sighs.....

I think this all goes to prove that stickers are not generally a good idea!

Another semi-accidental UP here.

My DCs love stickers- they stick them everywhere, I often get decorated in them, but we never use them as rewards (don't 'do' reward systems).

DS gets them at pre-school for things like eating his lunch or tidying up, but he'll do that anyway, because he likes his food and likes to be helpful- much better motivation than stickers, if you ask me.

I just want to revive this thread as I received my book today and am already onto pg 70 something and have to stop myself nodding in agreement - it has really consoidated how I felt but could not aritculate

Littlefish · 28/02/2009 09:06

Which book did you get Popsycal?

Tell us a bit more...

I've had a really tough week at school and could do with some positive reminders that the way we work will work!

Littlefish · 28/02/2009 09:09

Sorry - just realised I've posted this on the wrong thread - I thought I was on the positive re-inforcement thread. However, I'm still really interested Popsy!

Just reviving this thread cos I was wondering what UPers would think about this technique to stop biting DS is biting a bit ATM and I wondered whether to try it but don't want to confuse him by using too many different approaches and I have sort of been doing the UP approach for the last few months.
