Can you tell me what time your child starts school, what time he/she has breaktime and lunch and what time they finish?

DS's school has changed the timing of things and I am not that pleased about it:
The start and finish times remain the same (9am - 3.30pm) but they now have:

Breaktime (or Morning tea as they call it here) at 11am - 11.30
Lunch at 1.30pm

With a 'fruit break' at 10am and 12.30.

Not sure about this at all.

Do they need to eat every hour? We've been asked to send in more food for Morning Tea as Lunchtime is now an hour later than before.

Their lunch break is from 1.30 till 2.30.

That sounds very late for lunch.

Dd starts school at 8.45am
Morning Break 10.45-11.00am ish
Lunchtime 11.45am (don't know how long)
Afternoon break 2.30pm ish

If my kids were eating fruit at 12.30am they wouldn't eat their proper lunch then would end up be starving by mid afternoon.

The more I think about it, the more stupid it sounds.

MingMingtheWonderPet · 06/10/2008 22:26

Start at 9am (doors open at 8.45)

Break from 10.30 until 10.50 (fruit allowed)

Lunch from 12.30 until 1.30

Finish at 3.30

DS is in Y3.
In KS1 he had an afternoon break too.

VanillaPumpkin · 06/10/2008 22:27

Hmm, odd.

Start - 0850
Break - 1050 after assembly (20 mins?)
Lunch - 1200-1300
Afternoon break 1400?? (15 mins?)
School out - 1515

slayerette · 06/10/2008 22:27

Lunch seems really late!

DS starts at 8.40, has morning break at some point with fruit and a drink; cooked lunch at 12 pm; biscuit and drink sometime in the afternoon. If he's in after-school care, he has a packed tea at 3.30 pm (when school ends). The only food we have to provide is the packed tea; school provides the rest.

VanillaPumpkin · 06/10/2008 22:28

DD1 is KS1

goldilocksandmylittlebear · 06/10/2008 22:32

Have they given a reason as to why its like this?

As a teacher I can't understand how this works? It's a very broken day?

FrockHorror · 06/10/2008 22:36

DD starts at 8:45am, break time is at 10:00am. Lunch is from 12:00pm to 1:00pm and then they have afternoon break around 2:15pm for 15-20 minutes. She finishes at 3:00pm.

DD is in reception though and they do spend most of the time flitting between the classroom and the outdoor classroom area so she gets lots of outdoors time. They also have snack in the morning before break and again before afternoon break, which includes as much water or milk as they want.

I was just thinking.... my the time they have had break, fruit lunch etc in this way, they must lose over 2 hours a day!

At the most my class have 1 hour for lunch, 20 mins play and perhaps a learning break if they need it. At the most an hour and a half.

How do they get everything covered?!!

TheInvisibleManDidIt · 06/10/2008 22:55

ds's start at 9am. break at 10.20-10.40.

lunch 12.20-13.20.

finish at 15.00

pooka · 06/10/2008 22:59

Start at 9am.
Break at 10.20 til 10.40 (then eat fruit while reading in groups).
Lunch at 11.45 til 12.45
Afternoon break at 2.10 until 2.30
Finish at 3.30

So 1hr 40mins of breaks.

Quite nicely spaced too.

ja9 · 06/10/2008 23:07

our school:
9am start
10:30 - 10:45 break
12:15 - 1:15 lunch
3:15 home

so 1hr 15 breaks
5hrs lessons

ghosty · 06/10/2008 23:26

Thanks for this. Am gathering evidence - I have told his teacher that 1.30 is far too late for lunch IMO.
It used to be:
Start at 9am
Break at 11 - 11.20
Lunch at 12.30 to 1.40
Fruit eaten sometime in the afternoon in the classroom during a quiet time (story or something)

DS has NEVER ever managed to get past 12.30 without needing lunch.

The thinking behind it is the children flag from 1.40 to 3.30 so they wanted to make the lunch later.

08.50 start (class open from 8.30am)
10.30 - 10.50 break
10.50 - 11.00 fruit and milk
12.00 - 12.30 lunch
14.35 - 14.50 break
15.20 home

1hr 15 mins of breaks well spaced out.
As well as the fruit and milk break they take a healthy snack to have at break time (not sure if that is morning or afternoon break).

cory · 06/10/2008 23:48

No, I'm afraid I can't. I can tell you what time he starts, obviously, and what time he comes out, but am a bit vague on the bits in between.

I could try to excuse myself by the fact that ds is in Yr 4 so quite a big boy, but the truth is that I didn't really know these things when he was in Infants either. I sent in food and it got eaten. Most of the time.

Will I need to name change now?

Snap cory. I've got no idea when mine have break or lunchtime either. 1.30 does sound late though.

ghosty · 07/10/2008 07:23

tsk tsk

I don't think they need to eat so often, but one of the most effective teachers I have ever met (dd's year 3 teacher - now left to be a peripatetic music teacher so ds never got him - wahhhh!) used to send his class out to run round the field every hour on the hour. I think he could do it because he was sure he could get them back in again - I'm sure a lot of teachers might not have that degree of control!

MrsWeasley · 07/10/2008 07:56
