School trousers for VERY slim waist

DS has just turned 4 and starts reception in Sept. We've always had trouble finding trousers that don't fall down as he's so slim (probably more of a size 2-3 on waist). George, H&M and M&S trousers are all too big. Zara sometimes fit, but they don't have a school line.

Any recommendations for very very slim waist? He's not keen on a belt, though we may need to persevere with that...

DS can't even wear joggers. He's 9 and in age 3 swimming shorts.

M & S super skinny, extra tall. Size down on the waist and they'll be fine in the leg because of the extra leg length.

You can only get online. DS is 9 and he's in age 7 with the waist tightened.

For PE, he has running leggings.

I always found Asda really good for school trousers for my tall and slim sons. Their lengths are good, and I never had to resort to cutting extra notches in the elastic to slim them even more...

I would go for joggers if they allow

Much easier to wash and not have to iron and definitely more comfortable

NegroniMacaroni · 25/07/2025 19:02

Yes, we may go for joggers as he's complaining the trousers aren't comfy.

Is there such a thing as joggers with an adjustable waist (not just draw string)..? Can't seem to find any.

I think you’ve already found the answer but we fixed the exact same problem with DS many years ago with M&S, sizing down and going for the long length worked for us.

Next skinny fit with the adjustable waistband work beat for my skinny son.

We bought an adjustable waist and an elastic waist to compare from George and the elastic one was smaller overall, but still too big... However, I've just found that M&S do school trousers in 2-3yr size and longer length, so fingers crossed that might work...

On an aside - is it most common for Reception kids to wear proper school trousers, or do you find joggers common too? The school allows joggers instead, and we may find it easier to get joggers that fit, but I wasn't sure if he'd be out of place.

I was going to suggest getting them in a smaller size but the M&S ones with the additional hem extension to make them long enough.

M&S slim fit slim leg with adjustable waist. You could also look at sizing down but going with the longer leg option if they have it.

RandomMess · 25/07/2025 20:38

George used to do extra long so I went down in age by a few years on their slim fit ones.

LikeABat · 25/07/2025 20:43

@NegroniMacaroni Buy some elastic. Cut to a length a bit longer than his waist. Secure with a safety pin and use another safety pin to thread the other end through the waistband. Use safety pin to hold ends together and check fit. Sew ends together.

Also works on most pyjamas bottoms but may need to unstitch a seam to get access.

We got some from a school uniform shop who did tiny sizes, they had some trousers with a fully elasticated waist like joggers. Like these. https://www.schooluniform247.co.uk/Boys-Full-Elastic-Pull-Up-School-Trouser-2-8-yrs

(Edited with correct link, Zeco was the brand IIRC)

DongDingBell · 25/07/2025 21:11

Yes, as many age ranges down as you can, extra long, M&S skinny fit. Put the suspicious looking trousers through the wash a few times to soften them - DS2 will only wear DS1's cast offs because they are softer!!

We never found joggers that fitted.

I know Lindex do adjustable waist leggings so it might be worth looking on their site.

Next slim fit skinny trousers, my skinny son wore them for years.
