School trousers for VERY slim waist

NegroniMacaroni · 24/07/2025 09:13

DS has just turned 4 and starts reception in Sept. We've always had trouble finding trousers that don't fall down as he's so slim (probably more of a size 2-3 on waist). George, H&M and M&S trousers are all too big. Zara sometimes fit, but they don't have a school line.

Any recommendations for very very slim waist? He's not keen on a belt, though we may need to persevere with that...

Sainsbury's have an adjustable waist that you can pull in quite a lot.

Uponastarr · 24/07/2025 09:38

Asda do slim range and the waist bands have the button elastic to adjust

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 24/07/2025 09:40

This thread might become a Cancel the Cheque affair.
But, yes - M&S school trousers have adjustable waists, and a very useful ‘secret hem’.

BellissimoGecko · 24/07/2025 09:42

Next slim fit school trousers with adjustable waist.

Hercisback1 · 24/07/2025 09:43

M&S Skinny fit with the adjustable waist.

NegroniMacaroni · 24/07/2025 09:45

We bought an adjustable waist and an elastic waist to compare from George and the elastic one was smaller overall, but still too big... However, I've just found that M&S do school trousers in 2-3yr size and longer length, so fingers crossed that might work...

On an aside - is it most common for Reception kids to wear proper school trousers, or do you find joggers common too? The school allows joggers instead, and we may find it easier to get joggers that fit, but I wasn't sure if he'd be out of place.

My DD has this problem so we have to exclusively buy trousers with the adjustable button waists. She's luckily not particularly tall or it would be even more of an issue. Her school trousers are a mixture of Next, Sainsburys and M&S. Mostly from the boys section.

Can't comment on joggers as theyre not permitted at her school sadly.

Kuretake · 24/07/2025 09:52

We had this DS was teeny. You can get school trousers for nursery age (for posh prep schools I assume).

If they allow joggers I'd go for that though!

I feel your pain though, we couldn't even buy pants small enough when he was potty training!

Hercisback1 · 24/07/2025 12:28

Are you sure the elastic waist is smallest? Those adjustable ones close to almost nothing on the closest setting. I've got a tall (99th centile) height and 20th centile weight 5yo and the adjustable ones pulled fully in have stayed up, wheras elastic joggers fall down.

IkaBaar · 24/07/2025 12:32

My friend has this issue for her ds. She buys Asda ones, but still needs to cut a chunk of material out and sow them back together!

We couldn’t get the elastic ones to go small enough for DD, she had to wear a pinafore instead. Which still looked like it swamped her but didn’t fall down!

LikeABat · 24/07/2025 12:37

We always got the extra long M&S ones. If school allow joggers then that's probably easier in reception. Threading elastic through the waist works well to adjust the fit. Can also use this method for pyjama bottoms.

Next. Skinny waist slim leg - or is it slim waist skinny leg? Either way, all the skinnies. Literally the only school trousers that fit my ds.

justmeandtheclan · 24/07/2025 12:38

Amazon do a brand called lister school wear - I found them because they are autistic friendly but they have adjustable waits ect and my boys are both small too

RavenPie · 24/07/2025 12:43

I used to get M&S long length a few years younger (obviously might not work with a 4 yo). You can get skinny leg long and extra long age 2-3. My ds was shorter than average and v skinny (his waist is currently 26in at age 22 and 5ft9) and M&S always came up trumps.

Hmm interesting. Maybe I’m doing it wrong, will have another go!

We had an identical issue with my son when he started the school preschool class (where they wore uniform) as he has a tiny waist and little legs. We tried so many brands and ended up keeping M&S slim fit slim waist (which is a couple of cm "thinner" than the "standard" fit ones) in aged 2-3 years. We then had to make them shorter to fit him. Like others have said we also had some luck with the Next slim leg slim fit ones, but they had a metal fastener and zips which he found tricky whereas the M&S ones just pulled up.

If he can wear joggers then we found the ones from Primark to be the best fitting, again in aged size 2-3.

You can pull the elastic far more than you think you can!

Liliwen · 24/07/2025 13:39

M and s is the way. My son has always been skinny with very long legs. He has the slim leg stretchy ones that are in his age but extra long length. I have to massively adjust the waist but he says they’re comfortable. He’s quite specific about what he will wear too. He won’t wear the non stretchy ones as they have no give. He’s 12 though so not sure if they have the stretchy ones in the smaller sizes.

Didntask · 24/07/2025 13:41

Morrisons Nutmeg do a good slimfit school trouser. My ds is tall and skinny. He can still fit into the waist of 5/6yo clothes, but needs 12yo for length (he's 9yo 😅). Only pain is they're now only in store, so its a bit of a mission to find them.

Sounds similar to my DS. He likes the Hollister 26" waist jeans.

SneakyScarves · 24/07/2025 17:09

Like others we get M&S longer length 'extra long' (not just 'long') for our very slim DS. Only ones we’ve found that fit, and they have an adjustable waist so you can take it in some more if need be.

Even though trousers in his actual age size might stay up if we pulled in the waist to the max, they would bunch a lot in the back, which really doesn't look great. We've found the smaller size with longer length much better.

Omggg I'm so stupid. I didn't realise the elastic pulls out.... Aghhh! THANK YOU

Unfortunately DS is eyeing them very suspiciously now and refusing to try them on. Says they're uncomfortable. Sigh.

Go for joggers if he’s allowed, they’re much more comfortable and easier for him to get on.
im sure he won’t be the only one for those reasons but even if he is, reception kids don’t care what kind of trousers each other have on.

Have you adjusted the elastic bit from both sides equally? If you only do it from one side, they are uncomfortable. Even doing it from both sides, slim children will have to have the waist quite bunched up. Joggers would never have been an option as I never found any that even remotely fitted - always had to have trousers with the adjustable inside to get them small enough.

Ours came from the school shop but the brand was Trutex and they were always fine on my very slim children. However, they only had to wear trousers from 7 (had to be shorts before then, which made it much easier because I could just size down for the waist as the length didn’t matter as much).
