I haven't seen another thread similar to previous years, so thought it would be beneficial to start one as exams are now 1 month away.
I think SHHS, UCS, KCJS and WUS are all in October.

Also - Curious to see if number of applicants are down this year, with Labour's VAT raid.

Any idea how many are sitting for SPJS this time?

i would hope it’s nearer 300 like Kings.

San2023 · 17/11/2024 17:54

Are there indirect feeder schools for SPJS too?

Congratulations @Pbhar @2minutesplease @Choberia @Mama252 @Powerpray where do you all live? We hear Kings doesn’t picking kids who live too far. Wonder if that played a part in DS not making it past activity morning/interview…,.

We also live around NW, so I am not sure how much of a factor distance plays in the decision.

San2023 · 16/11/2024 18:11

Fellow mums with DS already achieved success in 7+/ 8+, do you think 7 mins for 15 math questions is realistic as per EPP test papers? What’s the average time your child takes for a similar task?

For the one stage and simple 2 stage questions (which I think most of the actual exams have been), DS is usually fine with this time.

Mama252 · 17/11/2024 18:05

one step and simple 2 step questions*

Thank you. We are still SW London, but definitely not close to King’s. It will be a long bus ride for DS unless we move. He is up for it though.

My DS received an offer for 7+ whilst we currently live over 12 miles away from KCJS, so hopefully it is still based on their performance and less so on their home address.

mertonmama · 17/11/2024 18:24

If you possibly can I'd strongly suggest avoiding a long journey. My two DS were at KCJS and we live/d locally. They're so busy and so little that a long commute makes life so much harder.

Save a longer journey for senior school.

Last year's newsletter said close to 400 sat the 7+. With VAT, I suppose this year should be 350 or below.

San2023 · 16/11/2024 19:24

Yes EPP test papers- mental arithmetic.

7 minutes is not possible. We did that before (the EPP). More like 10-20 minutes, depending on the paper. But accuracy should be 90% or above.

SWLondon001 · 17/11/2024 18:39

Someone asked about the dictation for SPJ above. The dictation: very, very, very slow. So focus on punctation and spelling.

2minutesplease · 17/11/2024 19:02

Caps0218 · 17/11/2024 17:35

Yes - but nevertheless at least half the kids come from these 2, so 24 to 30 places on offer for kids at other schools, which is not a lot!

Used to be true but not any more. A couple of years ago just 2-3 boys came from Rowans. Squirels as many know send about 20 kids every year and that was true 2-3 years ago too.

We live about 15 minutes drive, but we know a few boys who travel from Central and even North London. But I saw the map at SPJS with their boys’ locations and they were WAY wider.

SWlondonmum123 · 17/11/2024 19:53

We too unfortunately didn't make the second round of KCJS 8+ I can only assume that they ranked the boys based on their exam marks with those scoring the highest being offered the places, in compliment with positive feedback from the interview and activity day. It does become a bit of an emotional rollercoaster once you get that close but anyway onwards to SPJS. Hope everyone's preps are going well for those who do have exams left to prepare for.

San2023 · 17/11/2024 19:58

yeh we are not able to do within 7 mins. max we could do in 9 mins- EPP mental arithmetic tests.

Sorry to hear this. Good luck for 8+ SPJS. Finger crossed.

So sorry to hear that. I can only imagine how you must feel especially for 8+. Your DS has done so well already getting to the second round. Good luck with SPJ, crossing my fingers very tightly for you.

With mental maths, don’t they read the question and you have 10/15 seconds to answer it and then the next question is read?

OP posts:
San2023 · 17/11/2024 21:47

@Caps0218 no these are paper based and comes as many sets of 15 questions and time allowed 7 mins.

Caps0218 · 17/11/2024 21:58

@San2023 But the mental maths part of the exam at SPJS, I thought it was read out and you had to write the answer without any working?

We don't have SPJS specific practice ones.

Caps0218 · 17/11/2024 22:04

interesting, because other companies that do mental maths, do it with audio and you get an answer sheet to write your answers, and it’s roughly 10 seconds per question. Not sure EPP have the correct format?

OP posts:
Caps0218 · 17/11/2024 22:07

Just to add, we did an EPP mock exam and their mental maths section was 15 questions and they were read out and you had 10 seconds to answer each question.

Which company? Might be helpful to know.
