Hello

I thought I'd set up a new thread for those sitting 4+ in 2024 for September 2025 start date.

Any tips for prepping?

What schools are people considering?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Blacklabsonly · 13/11/2024 07:10

Sorry I got myself confused, Sally Hancock is still pre prep head

Ramen2021 · 18/11/2024 16:37

Does anyone know when we are expected to hear for round 2?

LionBrodie · 19/11/2024 10:11

We still haven't heard about SHHS round 2! I don't know if no news is bad news...

NwLdnmum · 19/11/2024 10:34

The admissions office for SHHS has said that they will be in touch by the first week of December, so still a bit of a wait I’m afraid :(

Ramen2021 · 19/11/2024 14:04

Thanks! I heard Highgate had an extra one yesterday for kids that were sick etc. So December makes sense

Blacklabsonly · 19/11/2024 17:59

An email from Highgate today says they will announce results before end of November

sel0401 · 20/11/2024 14:35

Anyone here doing JAGS / Alleyn's ?

NwLdnmum · 22/11/2024 16:33

Highgate results are out

Blacklabsonly · 22/11/2024 17:20

No second round for us at Highgate

notatigermom · 22/11/2024 18:30

Same here. DS did not get through the second round at Highgate. Does the school provide any feedback?

This was the first assessment of the season so definitely makes me feel a bit uneasy. Even though I know that the entire process is silly and I have ensured that I do not put any pressure on DS to “prepare” for these “assessments”, I can’t help but feel a little bit disappointed.

NwLdnmum · 22/11/2024 18:32

My understanding is that none of the schools tend to provide any feedback for the 4+ stage unfortunately

LionBrodie · 22/11/2024 22:20

I think it’s totally natural to feel disappointed and good for you for being honest about it. I’d feel exactly the same (we didn’t apply to Highgate so not had any results yet). But I do know plenty of people in other years who didn’t get Highgate then got fantastic offers elsewhere. It does not mean anything.

VividRaven · 22/11/2024 23:18

Very disappointed DS didn’t get through either. Now I’m wishing we had applied for some less selective prep schools, does anyone know of any good independent schools still accepting applications?

Wondering if we’ve put DS at a disadvantage by not sending him to a nursery like Broadhurst/Hampstead Hill. I also wish I knew what a four year old who gets a place in these selective schools is like - how impressive they must be!

Lapmum123 · 23/11/2024 05:45

DD didn’t get a second round either. She is a September-born child and extremely eloquent, confident, and outgoing. She has been attending an academic pre-prep school for the past two years (the current head was at Highgate). She is able to write her name, numbers, and all the letters of the alphabet. We didn’t do any tutoring. She said that she played mostly and then the teacher read a book and asked questions. She was happy when she got out, and was disappointed to leave.

Two kids from her class last year were accepted into Highgate, and a dear friend’s daughter didn’t get into Highgate, North London Collegiate, or South Hampstead, despite attending Broadhurst School and having a full year of tutoring.

I’m baffled and also disappointed, but I accept that maybe the school saw something in my daughter that wouldn’t match what they are looking for, and perhaps it wouldn’t have been a good fit. Basically, there are so many variables that there is no winning formula. I want to hope for and trust the teachers in the selection process.

Our kids will be okay either way! Good luck to all the children and parents, and I hope you all have a positive experience

mumof2northwestlondon · 23/11/2024 13:31

There are so many other variables they take into consideration I think. It may be they have too many siblings similar abilities for September born. They also need to have diversity in the class in terms of ethnic background. And yes some kids may or may not be ready or may have just had a bad day. Your daughter sounds amazing and super ready for reception! I am sure she will find the right school.

Hi! The admissions manager at SHHS said they will be communicating with parents end of Nov…

NwLdnmum · 27/11/2024 20:18

Apparently SHHS will email the results Friday 29 Nov in the afternoon.

YellowBathView · 29/11/2024 16:54

Results for SHHS are out

Cocktail201 · 29/11/2024 17:25

Hi guys! I got the results for the 4 + and my DD didn’t get called back for second round at SHHS. Am I really pathetic for being disappointed about it? I can’t help it but I am. She’s now got St Christopher’s which has always been my first choice but I feel so demotivated and feel like pulling out :( Also they don’t give feedback so I don’t really know what I’m working with :(

I think it’s totally normal to feel disappointed. The 4+ is a tough process because these children are so little, and them not making it through second rounds or offers is in no way a reflection of their ability IMO. Also SHHS is one of the toughest as there are very little places, and from my understanding, St Christopher is generally easier to get in compared to SHHS, NLCS, Habs.
They will be absolutely fine in the end, but it is very tough for us parents!

Thanks, Made me feel better on this cold miserable winter night 🥺
She is my first child going to school, By the time I got round to applying I missed a few deadlines and I don’t know many prep schools around me so I’ve only applied to 3. Anyone know of any good independent schools? So far SC and Devonshire are the ones I’ve applied for.

St Margarets, St Marys, The Village Schol, Sarum Hall, NLCS, Habs Girls, Francis Holland,

Nishmum · 10/12/2024 23:10

I am new to London schooling scene so wanted to ask something.
Having visited quite a few schools earlier this year for my DD (and quite a few mentioned in @NLseneca’s msg - thanks this is a great list), there seems to be quite a gap between top schools and other ones.
Like NLCS, Habs have really great extra-curricular facilities and offer variety of opportunities to kids while St Margaret’s, Village Prep in comparison are very (area, class area, etc) and dont seem to offer much beyond decent education. I am not saying these are not good schools but are there no in-betweens as such in NW london - schools which might not be top tier but still have decent outdoor space, good mix of extra-curriculars and education?

Maybe Orley Farm?

Highgate is perhaps the only school with great facilities but its hard to get into
