Swearing in year 3 reading book

babyin2020 · 04/11/2020 17:58

My 7 year old in year 3 came home today with a new book for reading at home he opened the book and handed it to me. The first line of the book opens with swearing. Do you think this is appropriate?

Waiting with baited breath for the big reveal.

AnImposter · 04/11/2020 22:38

My moneys on 'damn' 🤞🏼

ktp100 · 04/11/2020 22:41

If you're not going to tell us what the word was, how can we have an opinion?!!

MoonriseKingdom · 04/11/2020 22:49

Most exciting and yet ultimately disappointing thread in the education section ever.

Please come back OP. Please, pretty fucking please.

SierraHotel · 04/11/2020 22:51

Some very funny comments here 😂

Mischance · 04/11/2020 22:53

I had a teacher friend who found their set book (secondary school) was a book by a Swedish author and it was called "Bonk the Dog."

She did struggle with it in a class of 14 year olds!

I don't think based on the comments OP wants our opinion anymore.
WhispersOfWickedness · 04/11/2020 23:01

Nearly drove off the road when my DC announced that their teacher had said that they were not to use the C word. Turned out she meant Christmas Grin

Saisong · 04/11/2020 23:05

The day DS reported a Y2 classmate had used the 'f' word was amusing - at least it was once we established that 'fart' was the offending term Grin

This?

Swearing in year 3 reading book
MiaowMix · 04/11/2020 23:09

This is nearly as gripping as the US election 😂
Reminds me of when our A level English teacher read a Seamus Heaney poem that included the line "the scraggy wee shits" - complete with terrible Irish accent.
That did for us. We were gone.

Could this be the book?

MintyMabel · 04/11/2020 23:11

Well that was a pointless post, wasn't it.

freddosfrogs · 05/11/2020 04:33

@Findahouse21

Reminds me, my dad once got baby dd a book from the library on their weekly visit 'can you stroke the fireman's hard black helmet' snort
Grin
freddosfrogs · 05/11/2020 04:34

@CompleteBarstool

My betting is that they were learning about new words formed by fusing together parts of existing words (known as blends);

Cockwomble
Knobjockey
Arsehole
Cocklodger

are all great examples

Compound words actually
BryanAdamsLeftAnkle · 05/11/2020 04:53

Was it this gem?

Mustbe3ormorecharacters · 05/11/2020 05:12

Sometimes I give posters a hard time for not including enough information in the original post but this takes the cake.

BikeRunSki · 05/11/2020 05:14

@OohThatCat

The Vicar of Nibbleswicke? Roald Dahl book where the Vicar keeps saying things backwards, including sip (pis) and park (krap)?

Found it in my school library as a kid and obviously thought it hilarious Grin

The Vicar of Nibbleswick is very clever, and quite subtly in jus it drops in the rude words. My DC found it very funny around 7-8-9.
Quisto · 05/11/2020 07:24

You really haven't lived unless your headteacher has telephoned to say " Bullshit". School has new reading books which my ds ( y4 hopefully humblebrag worthy Wink]) has started to read and found the word bullshit. He was very sensible, told the teacher, who informed the Head and they've pulled all the copies before anyone else found it. Gunslinger by Stephen King. We thought it was hilarious, but can understand it's not age appropriate.

JohnnyJohnnyYesMama · 05/11/2020 17:12

Seriously still no swear word ?!

ParadeOfRemotes · 05/11/2020 17:21

Come on to fuck, OP! I need to know what it was.

(Is that a different use of 'fuck'? It may be a local saying now that I think about it)

MooominMamma · 05/11/2020 17:29

Well, that was time fucking wasted going through that thread . . . what's the fucking word OP?!

@SummerHouse 😆😆😆

Harls1969 · 05/11/2020 18:00

This thread is hilarious! Very disappointed that I don't know what the swear was though.
