Dd (4) starts school in September and we're in the process of sorting uniform

We'd found some skorts at sainsburys and I'd needed to buy size 6 in them, to find that they've now been discontinued in the grey.

Normal skirts don't sit right on dd and always ride up. I've tried a pair of shorts from next, but there was no give in them and no elastic whatsoever and mil said she looked weird in them and not like a "proper little school girl".

I've spotted some culottes on Sainsburys that we'll try next, but if they don't fit, I'm not sure what to do to be honest.

We don't have a big enough tesco in our town, so it doesn't have the clothes department, but I don't mind driving to the next town along if needs be, if anyone knows what they have available?

Have you considered a pinafore dress? DD has sensory issues, she is very fussy about clothing. She will wear a dress with leggings underneath. She’s refused all skirts and trousers. I bought this Asda dress which she will happily wear. It’s Jersey so very soft.

OptimisticSix · 05/07/2020 13:16

Maybe boys school shorts would fit her better? One of mine wore her brothers shorts and found them more comfy

pinklemonade84 · 05/07/2020 13:17

She's not a big dress person either. She much prefers to be in shorts, joggers or leggings. It's partly why I'm so frustrated about the skorts being discontinued as I told her they were shorts Wink

M and S do some lovely girls trousers. We use John Lewis boys’ shorts for dd when it’s very hot, but they don’t tend to need summer uniform in September so I’d just stick to the trousers.

sleepismysuperpower1 · 05/07/2020 13:20

is she allowed to wear a pinafore? That might be worth a try. Or a skirt like this, where the waist is fully elasticated?

Firstly it has nothing to do with MIL so please ignore her opinion.

My DD wore shorts for every day of primary come sun or snow. Mixture of boys and girls, mainly from Tesco, Matalan, Next, M&S, Sainsbury. Have a look online. I'd say the Matalan range was the best overall in terms of how well it wore.

pinklemonade84 · 05/07/2020 13:20

@OptimisticSix I might try the boys section if needs be. These were the shorts from next, the fit wasn't too bad, but with there being no give or stretch, I'd prefer her to have something else

Asda have some great shorts for girls. I've got grey shorts and gingham culottes for summer.
hope this works!

SandieCheeks · 05/07/2020 13:22

Shorts or trousers are fine, surely?

GetUpAgain · 05/07/2020 13:22

n.b. the boys always had better pockets that the girls ranges. At age 4 there is no difference in the fit. By the end of primary there is a difference in waist/hip ratio.

pinklemonade84 · 05/07/2020 13:23

Mil's idea of fashion for her is tartan dresses, chunky tights and boots, just not dd at all. I think because mil only had boys, she was desperate to be able to dress dd up in all the girly stuff

I really appreciate all of the suggestions so far, thank you so much

There are some really nice, smart school trousers in jogging bottom material about.
I think I got them in Asda but m&s do them too.
My kids changed their minds so often about what they liked to wear. One wanted trousers but didn't wear them and one didn't but asked for them when the weather changed.

EmperorCovidula · 05/07/2020 13:28

Do you have a sewing machine? You could see bike shorts to skirts. Should solve the riding up issue and hopefully be more comfortable for her without compromising on movement.

feliciabirthgiver · 05/07/2020 13:29

Next do a good range of girls school trousers (although my non skirt wearing 4 year old surprised us all by wearing a pinafore dress on her first day of school). I can also recommend Matalan school uniform.

GreenTulips · 05/07/2020 13:34

Next also do skorts for school

StylishDuck · 05/07/2020 13:48

I've definitely seen playsuits in the schoolwear section of M&S before. But I would just go with trousers if that's what she's happiest in. (I would also ignore MIL - not up to her!)

PerspicaciaTick · 05/07/2020 14:00

Does the school not allow trousers?

Longtalljosie · 05/07/2020 14:03

Who’s more important, MIL or your DD? Mine is the same and for the same reasons. She repeatedly buys DD1 dresses which stay in the wardrobe and are then transferred to the loft ready for DD2.

Zoflorabore · 05/07/2020 14:04

My friend’s dd has skorts and shorts from Asda school uniform, they have a huge selection of stuff and are very reasonably priced. She doesn’t dislike skirts or pinafores, my friend just bought them for a change.

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 05/07/2020 14:05

M&S have culottes and all school uniform is 25% off at the moment

bluebluezoo · 05/07/2020 14:07

Asda do plain grey school shorts. Trouser style, but knee length.

It’ll be trouser weather by the time they go back though won’t it?

HappyPunky · 05/07/2020 14:07

I got DD some trousers from sainsbury's. She also has a couple passed on that are George at asda that have a little charm on them.
I've not bothered with skirts or dresses because they're less practical for running around and DD finds trousers easier than tights when she goes to the toilet.

Greggers2017 · 05/07/2020 14:08

My dd is now 12 and wore colulottes, skorts or trousers all through primary schools. Now it's just trousers. She's never worn skirts or a pinafore.
Dsd is the complete opposite. And is skirts and trousers. Annoying when they're the same size.

anon5000 · 05/07/2020 14:12

Not sure what it has to do with your MiL,but just buy your DD trousers?

Nat6999 · 05/07/2020 14:14

TU have the checked culottes school dresses in, have you looked at Matalan, their school stuff is generously sized. Tesco school range is also good.
