Dd (4) starts school in September and we're in the process of sorting uniform

We'd found some skorts at sainsburys and I'd needed to buy size 6 in them, to find that they've now been discontinued in the grey.

Normal skirts don't sit right on dd and always ride up. I've tried a pair of shorts from next, but there was no give in them and no elastic whatsoever and mil said she looked weird in them and not like a "proper little school girl".

I've spotted some culottes on Sainsburys that we'll try next, but if they don't fit, I'm not sure what to do to be honest.

We don't have a big enough tesco in our town, so it doesn't have the clothes department, but I don't mind driving to the next town along if needs be, if anyone knows what they have available?

My dd wore those soft jersey school trousers...they more like leggings but still proper trousers iyswim...slightly looser fit than leggings but still soft material and no fastenings. I found them the best as easy to change for pe and comfortable. I'd get them in the supermarket but sometimes hard to find the right size as I think they got snapped up fast

drspouse · 07/07/2020 14:05

Sounds good. We found plain black cotton shorts hard to get but eventually splashed out on organic ones from ecooutfitters - they have lasted well for 2 DCs.

SleepingStandingUp · 07/07/2020 14:05

Another vote for trousers, it's to be red hot in Sept. And it it's warm, she can have less on the top half

pastapestoparmesan · 07/07/2020 14:05

I have no idea what teams on Instagram are, or why your mil’s opinion is relevant, but I suggest you dress your daughter in whatever you and she think are practical and comfortable.

Redwinestillfine · 07/07/2020 14:08

She's 4- just get her a pinnifore and tell her that's her uniform. Really not worth stressing over.

Iverunoutofnames · 07/07/2020 14:09

DD wore jersey trousers. As she said, she liked running and they were the best thing.

Because she doesn't like dresses. She's happy in shorts and trousers, so that's what she'll be wearing

I thought uniform wasn't a requirement in primary in the same way as secondary.
I used to send mine in wearing whatever dark bottoms and unbranded polo tops.

Didn't care which section I bought their clothes from, but then I get. my t-shirts, shirts, boxers, socks and hoodies from the blokes/teenage boys sections. Seem to be better designed.

formerbabe · 07/07/2020 14:11

I always found dresses and skirts ridiculously impractical for school, as if it's cold, they'll need tights and a four year old getting changed for pe will struggle with that.

canigooutyet · 07/07/2020 14:13

@pinklemonade84

I meant she'll go in trousers when the weather gets cold
Anything like one of mine and she will be demanding to wear the shorts in the winter as well 🤣
canigooutyet · 07/07/2020 14:16

Get Mil one of the reborn dolls for Christmas. She can dress her little girl in anything she wants. It will be the gift that keeps giving when you start foisting your choices on her for many years.

Or one of those dogs that wears clothing 🤣(I am not comparing a dog to a baby before anyone batshit thinks I am)

Asda?
They look good thank you, and the culottes at the side too. I'll have a drive to our big asda one evening this week to have a look as her size isn't available online Thank you xx

No a uniform isnt worth stressing a kid out over, therefore, like OP has done, the kid will wear shorts and tshirt and be stress free
Georgielovespie · 10/07/2020 22:18

The issues with the playsuits can be the extra material for the top, they tend to see that the bottom half has cleared their thighs and sit down not realising the rest of the top has fallen into the toilet bowl behind them.

Lots of shorts get dropped to the floor of the toilets when children pull them down, and trust me the floors are clean at the start of the day and not at the end. I have been in year 2 where there was just a poo on the floor in the corridor. I assume someone didn't quite make it in time and it rolled out of their pants Grin ah KS1!

Top tip, put a spare uniform into her bag, tights/socks, knickers, everything, that way if she has an accident or spills water on herself etc she has something to wear that she will feel comfortable in. Remind her it is in there too.

She looks adorable in the culottes!

bombaychef · 13/07/2020 23:38

The play suits are a toilet nightmare. DD refused them as they got covered in wee when she was in infants. She's always just worn Asda or next girls or boys shorts and trousers

I ask mine every year what they want to wear and get told skirts like the other girls and within the first month - they're begging to get back into trousers as their legs are cold!

I just buy the jersey style trousers from Asda or Sainsburys which are very soft and comfy and almost like leggings - usually one of mine start wearing trousers and then half the class follows! Wouldn't be worrying too much about skorts/cullotes/shorts at this point in the year - it'll be a short time till it's too cold and they'll be outgrown by the hot months next year!

tattychicken · 14/07/2020 20:44

M and S online do a sensory range, the name escapes me but it might be worth a look...no labels and flat seams.

pinklemonade84 · 14/07/2020 20:51

@Periodprob we were told in the reception zoom meeting that if they wanted to, the girls could wear the gingham uniform when they started

Have you tried M&S, they have a fantastic range of fits. It's the only place we can buy trousers that fit my son.

hellotoday27 · 14/07/2020 21:01

I've bought trousers from next in a lovely soft jersey material for my dd. Very comfy and good fit.

LunaLoveFood · 14/07/2020 21:39

Asda are great for uniform, they wash really well and have outlived the uniform I bought from next.

Soontobe60 · 14/07/2020 22:05

@pinklemonade84

I'd teach her how to go to the toilet and get herself in and out of it. If she's happier in a playsuit, then that's what I'll get her for when it's warmer
Oh god, the number of hours I've spent helping little ones get out of and back in a play suit in school! Most little ones leave it til the last minute to go to the toilet, so often have accidents as they can't get it off in time, or it falls in the floor into the wee, then they can't get it back in again. They look lovely but are a nightmare! When half the class wear them it's so time consuming, plus we're supposed to be keeping our distance in school. My DD had the grey jersey pull on trousers all the way through primary school, as she refused to wear skirts.
