Dd (4) starts school in September and we're in the process of sorting uniform

We'd found some skorts at sainsburys and I'd needed to buy size 6 in them, to find that they've now been discontinued in the grey.

Normal skirts don't sit right on dd and always ride up. I've tried a pair of shorts from next, but there was no give in them and no elastic whatsoever and mil said she looked weird in them and not like a "proper little school girl".

I've spotted some culottes on Sainsburys that we'll try next, but if they don't fit, I'm not sure what to do to be honest.

We don't have a big enough tesco in our town, so it doesn't have the clothes department, but I don't mind driving to the next town along if needs be, if anyone knows what they have available?

I've ordered shorts from Sainsburys and M&S for her to try so far. I'm going to check out Asda and Matalan next

Just wanted to say thank you so much for all of the suggestions, I really appreciate it. Obviously I don't want to be dragging her round the shops to try things on, so these suggestions have been a massive help

If you've already got the playsuits and are getting trousers for when it's cooler, I wouldn't get a 3rd set of bottoms for in between. Jersey all the way with trousers and pinafores. Trousers on PE days.

Rather than tights we went for dark knee length socks for most of primary.

Breadandroses1 · 06/07/2020 13:00

M&S do jersey school trousers- voila! School joggers. I also got DD some nice school shorts in there.

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 06/07/2020 13:12

DD wears the Asda jersey school trousers most days, just for practical reasons. Warmer, reduced risk of grazes when she falls over running around! Her school actually recommend the soft jersey trousers for the reception and KS1 kids as they're better for playing in. Asda school uniform is good, cheap and cheerful but wears pretty well.

Shorts and playsuits are not ridiculously strange stuff Confused

dd2 wears trousers shorts and playsuit to school. Even chose the "boys" trainer style shoes over the mary Janes. Anyone who thinks that's odd can replace the shoes every five mins should they wish...

Whats actually ridiculous is other peoples obsession with dressing girls in girly stuff all the time and would rather they trip over their floor length maxi dresses on a climbing wall in the park requiring rescuing by strangers than let them wear something practical least when it matters.

Why do you care what your MIL thinks. Its your dd that has to wear it.

Next do nice shorts

Have you considered telling your MIL to fuck off??

pinklemonade84 · 06/07/2020 13:38

My friend has actually just grabbed me one of these to try on dd from Asda. I'm definitely going to be getting her trousers for winter, loving the Jersey suggestions, thank you

If MIL is so concerned about what her GD wears, she's more than welcome to purchase all her clothes from now on, surely? Grin

I'll be buying dd whatever she's comfortable in, so mil is going to have to lump it, as she's certainly not going to like it 🤦🏻‍♀️

Dd is happy with shorts and trousers, even the one skort we have from sainsburys that fits, and she loves her playsuit (so I'll spend a bit of time making sure she can use the toilet without dropping it on the floor). The main thing for me is that she's comfortable, whilst fitting in with the uniform requirements

@Myneighboursnorlax

Bit of advice with the play suits, make sure she has plenty of practice taking them off for using the toilet. Especially if she’s wearing a jumper/cardigan over the top.
Yes. I was going to say this. The teacher won't always have time to help especially if it is urgent.
GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 06/07/2020 13:57

My DD has sensory issues and won't skirts or tights. She wears trousers in a soft, jersey material. They're probably less smart but she's 8 - her bring warm and comfy is far more important!

CaptainMyCaptain · 06/07/2020 14:01

Trousers are perfect for Reception age girls. Easier to get changed for PE for one thing, most girls that age struggle with tights. They are warmer for outside play and more suitable for sitting cross legged on the carpet. (ex Reception teacher)

My daughter wears the shorts and trousers from the "boys" section on Sainsbury's and gets lots of compliments on how cute she looks. She also wears skirts but the shorts look much smarter on her. We don't tell her they are "boys" shorts - they're just shorts. Lots of the girls in her reception class wore trousers.

mocktail · 07/07/2020 07:24

DD (now 9) has worn boys' shorts and trousers ever since reception. They fit really nicely and look good. Never had a negative comment about them, and they're much more practical than skirts.

sirfredfredgeorge · 07/07/2020 09:25

DD has worn shorts - almost always boys as they are the only ones that fit, I wouldn't necessarily bother with trousers btw, DD has never worn them when she has the choice, just in the early days when we didn't have enough shorts for every day during the winter, school was way too hot for trousers.

viques · 07/07/2020 10:35

Another anti play suiter chipping in here! The problem with play suits from a school perspective is that if a child has an wee/poo accident, as they do, then the whole thing has to be replaced, ie you have to find a top and bottoms for the child to wear. Whereas if a pair of trousers or shorts get wet then it's clean knickers, clean trousers off you go. Sounds a minor thing but after a few weeks in reception the spare clothing drawer gets a bit depleted.....

Note to new parents, please wash and return school emergency clothing ASAP. And also consider donating school clothes and decent underwear your child has grown out of . At one point we got so desperate we actually marked underwear with the school initials, it sort of worked in that we often saw them again - as kids got changed for PE!

BikeRunSki · 07/07/2020 13:15

Another thing about play suits is that if the child’s back grows, the whole thing is too small. Whereas shorts/skirts/trousers and a polo shirt/blouse can be replaced seperately, and dresses can just get a bit shorter.

pinklemonade84 · 07/07/2020 13:51

So, the shorts and culottes from sainsburys were a hit. The shorts from M&S have no stretch, so I'm sending them back and didn't even try them on her. I think she looks adorable in the shorts 😍

I don't get why you aren't buying her shorts for summer and trousers for winter?
My DD has a few dresses for mega hot days but she's just as comfy in cotton shorts. Trousers for winter.

She'll go in shorts when the weather gets cold. But for now the shorts will do

My daughter doesn’t like skirts and wears trousers. You can buy various types usually - more formal ones with buttons/hooks, or pull on jersey styles with elasticated waistbands. DD prefers the latter.
