Oh god we've started getting the Kipper books and even I have no idea what the story is!

We've got the Getting Up book from Oxford Reading Tree and we are meant to talk about each page and tell the story without words. I am clueless.

The end is that it's the dads birthday and a load of randoms are in the garden but the beginning and middle seem to involve a dirty top getting clean and while the kid trashes its room the parents seem happy. At the end you see the father's back so obviously the characters that seemed like the parents weren't the parents as they look nothing alike.

It's basically a trip with no LSD.

Floppy barked and barked and barked. The neighbours must have been demented!

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 29/09/2017 08:13

The next door neighbour is a perv.

Fekko · 29/09/2017 08:14

Why the daft names?

Gileswithachainsaw · 29/09/2017 08:18

Cos although they are somehow old enough to go to well known dogging spots on their own and having a dad who is to stupid to look after them they were too young to pronounce the names properly Hmm

Fekko · 29/09/2017 08:30

Bob, Kevin and Chris?

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 29/09/2017 08:33

Kipper is Christopher, but I always get the other two wrong.

I've just checked.

Biff sounds like it should be Elizabeth, but she's Barbara. Chip is David.

We used to be given the teachers' notes. Just as well as I had no clue what the stories were about either.

SleepFreeZone · 29/09/2017 09:36

God I can tell I am walking into a sinister underworld of kids books here. I'm going to have to read the links on this thread and get myself clued up for what's coming Confused

The daft names were voted on by children in various schools. I have a friend who was one of the children. I did ask her what she was thinking, but apparently she didn't vote for those names.
They also voted on whether to use mummy, mum, mother etc.

I think the only one worth reading is the one where the horse gets drunk. I mean who thought that was suitable! It's better than a lot of spoof "children's books".
Thankfully dd1 and dd2 were reading way ahead of the books they got from school so I let them read them to themselves and they read more interesting books of my choice to me.
Ds read them all with such an expression of disgust all the way through that they gave up giving them to him and found books he was interested it. Unfortunately "Fighter planes in WWII" in various forms I didn't find the most interesting, but I could drift off while he read them. That is until I got "mummy, mummy, look" Isn't this the best plane ever? It's the Spitfire mark VII-look it has 5 parts to the propeller and can go at speeds up to 500mph... Mummy, do you think I could have one in the garden..." (no corrections please I made the facts up)
They're doing WWII at school this year (year 6) He's disgusted with them again. Apparently they're doing boringly easy bit like "The Blitz" and not even talking properly about the really interesting bits (ie the planes) when there's so much more to find out.

Standardpubquizname · 29/09/2017 20:07

Their real names are

Beth (Biff)
David (Chip) Hmm
Kipper (Christopher)

I have no explanation...

Fekko · 29/09/2017 20:27

Kipper will always be a dog on our house.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 29/09/2017 21:31

Barbara for biff

Standardpubquizname · 29/09/2017 22:13

Oooo Barbara's even better than Beth Grin

showergel1 · 29/09/2017 22:17

Oh Floppy, no Floppy, oh Floppy, Oh Floppy, Floppy!
I also take to saying 'It's the weather said Mrs May' every time it's windy.

stargirl1701 · 29/09/2017 22:38

The reason for the names is that skipper couldn't say David and Barbara when he was little. He said Chip and Biff, and it stuck.

It's in the old ORT Teacher's Book from many moons ago.

stargirl1701 · 29/09/2017 22:51

Kipper not skipper.

"And then there's speculation on the biggest mystery of all - just what are Biff, Chip and Kipper's real names?
"Elizabeth, David and Christopher," says Mr Hunt."

Alidoll · 30/09/2017 11:41

Whoohooo, DD finally moved on from these...now onto real books with chapters and everything!! AND some of them are even non-fiction (book on dolphins last week).

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 30/09/2017 11:55

Oh Floppy, no Floppy, must be high up on the list of the worst early reading books ever written. Second maybe only to the look Book from 'Ginn'.

tobee · 30/09/2017 12:16

Dd (now 22) used to get this. Interspersed with Bangers and Mash, who were monkeys, and not much better.

Scentofwater · 30/09/2017 12:26

I hated the Kipper books so much when I was a child I refused to read them. The teachers were obsessed with them and I wasn't allowed to read anything else for a whole term. Luckily my mum agreed with me so she helped me sneak in other books inside the kipper ones.

I can't believe they are still being used, is there really nothing better by now?
