Joined it recently, but might have to leave - so depressed at the level of incompetence! This weekend I've seen threads from a teacher of 30+ years who says that phonics is to blame for all her non-readers in Y2, a teacher who wants to know how to collect evidence in Y2 for explaining writers' use of figurative language (don't bother - you're reading the Y6 interim framework, love Wink) and a teacher who wants advice on dealing with 'figgity' children. And loads if threads asking to be spoonfed to plan EVERYTHING down to the last detail. Or threads that say 'do we have to teach such and such? Where can I find out? Thanks in advance.' READ THE BLOODY CURRICULUM!

And breathe.

I'm in the EYFS groups and they are equally ridiculous. There's been several incidents of people posting negative remarks about their school/ SMT with a public profile and the school listed as their place of employment!

Whatever happened to common sense.

Feenie · 11/12/2016 17:29

Aaaaaaaarrrggghh!!!!!!

Thank you. I needed that.

It's in response to another ridiculous twinkl thread, btw, not you ninnypoo.

Someone's getting told off for daring to suggest we have better things to do with our time than decorating classroom doors. :o

RandomDent · 11/12/2016 18:53

Actually that raises a really good point re displays. We had a couple of students last year and I had received some posters from our local NUT branch re the 24 tasks. I asked them if they needed one and they looked at me blankly. Their uni had not even mentioned them, they had no idea of all the admin tasks we are not really supposed to be doing.

ninnypoo · 11/12/2016 21:04

'So I have brought my class 4 selection boxes, the ones with like crunchie, dairy milk, buttons, fudge etc but I want to do some maths work with it as well. Has anyone got any good ideas for year 5? I was thinking about measuring the area and perimeter of the bars or doing a bar chart of favourite chocolate?'

Why not teach your class what they need to learn in maths rather than finding a tenuous link to chocolate?

ninnypoo · 11/12/2016 21:04

Random I've never heard of the 24 tasks Blush

maizieD · 11/12/2016 21:10

They were detailed in the 2003 Workload Agreement. I think the 'agreement' was mostly quietly ignored.

Here they are:

toomuchicecream · 11/12/2016 21:26

The first summer I joined the Twinkl group (plus a couple of others) I felt myself getting increasingly panic-struck when reading how much others were doing to set up their classrooms and prepare for September. It wasn't until I hid the groups that I could properly relax and start to recharge over the holidays. I'm, er, mature, have been teaching for a good 12 years and am an SLT member so somebody obviousy thinks I'm ok at what I do. Yet seeing pictures of lovingly prepared classrooms, along with lists of "bargains" bought to equip said rooms, made me feel really insecure about my teaching. What on earth must it be like to be newly qualified and reading all that over-excited nonsense about perfect classrooms and fun fun fun activities???

You sound rather judgemental. If you've nothing positive to contribute to that particular forum and you seem a bit of a know it all anyway maybe you shouldn't be on there.

mrz · 12/12/2016 06:19

You can't make positive contributions when adults are precious little snowflakes who can't take constructive criticism they only want replies that say how wonderful they are!

Feenie · 12/12/2016 07:23

Who are you talking to, bumbleclat? Although that's quite funny - telling someone how judgemental you think they are is a bit, er, judgemental, no?

OP posts:
Bumbleclat · 12/12/2016 08:48

Op I'm talking to you. I am judging you yes. I am not however, on Twinkl Key Stage 1 group being mean spirited and using it to make myself feel superior.

bretonpuffin · 12/12/2016 09:13

As a parent who has joined the group, I don't think people on here are being mean spirited at all. I expect they just feel utterly exasperated at their counterparts.

As I said before, the literacy levels of teachers on there are concerning. Most of them seem unable to think for themselves and are often only interested in ideas when they are going to be observed. Obviously I'm not saying this to feel superior as I'm not a teacher myself.

It worries me to think that DD's teacher could be bumbling along without a clue. I'm glad however that there clearly are another calibre of teachers as seen on here.

Feenie · 12/12/2016 10:54

I am not however, on Twinkl Key Stage 1 group being mean spirited and using it to make myself feel superior.

That's right - you're not. And as such, you are in no position to judge the advice I give, which is actually a good mixture of positive advice and redirection towards statutory documents and or correction of myths that teachers cling on to.

Bumbleclat · 12/12/2016 11:04

Well, sounds like you're having a barrel of laughs so- enjoy!

insancerre · 12/12/2016 11:20

I've had to hide all the EYFS groups as they were making my blood pressure soar
I actually joined the twinkl early years group on the recommendation of my ofsted inspector friend
What was she thinking?
I'm in a managers group
A big debate at the moment is how to stop children running inside
We've had lots of replies suggesting sticking cut out feet on the floor
I am resisting the temptation to post "just bloody tell them to walk!"

Feenie · 12/12/2016 12:33

No, I'm not bumbleclat - some of it is very frustrating. Some teachers are not interested in incidental things like teaching to the curriculum or making sure every child can read.

OP posts:
Bumbleclat · 12/12/2016 12:39

I just keep an eye on and remain reflective of my own teaching practice. I try not to pay any mind to that of others.

Feenie · 12/12/2016 12:58

Yeah, who cares about those non-readers? Not my problem. Hmm

OP posts:
RandomDent · 12/12/2016 16:51

Ach, it's no different from the TES posts of old, not just poor old Mrs Cole! Wasn't there a legend about two people doing the same interview lesson because of advice given? Or two identical job applications. Some sort of cautionary tale from Middlemarch or TheoGriff anyway. :o

There does seem to be a lot of posts about the icing instead of the cake. Hopefully they're just new and keen, and work-life balance will emerge eventually.

mrz · 12/12/2016 16:57

So it doesn't bother you that children are being let down by these teachers Bumble? Because it damn well bothers me!
