3+ 4+ 5+ 7+ support thread 2017

In previous years I have started these threads to help and support all those parents involved in the independent school admissions process.

I wasn't going to start one this year as I know I would not be able to check back on it as regularly as I would like, which then defeats the purpose of the thread.

However, after numerous positive PM's about the threads I think it would be a shame not to start one where at least the hand holding can continue. Flowers

There are many many people who have been through the process and 'live to tell the tale' . There are also other tutors I know who read this thread and it would be great if you all could help and support and share your ideas.

Exactly!! We also did the Orley Farm assessment. Different schools in style, but we believe she could thrive in both.

Homely1 · 23/01/2017 21:20

Tenniswife, what did your daughter say she was asked? Did she elaborate on closed questions or did she stick to answering?

Homely1 · 23/01/2017 21:22

..... and what did she say she could not do... so sorry, I'm going stir crazy

Mummywow · 23/01/2017 21:25

Homely don't worry I am not convinced the kids report back accurately at all!

LilaGrace · 23/01/2017 21:27

Mummywow- they don't, do they! Sometimes they tell you what they think you want to hear, and other times I think they deliberately say things to annoy us!

Homely1 · 23/01/2017 21:30

True but you know what, her story has not changed and I'm sure she's telling me the truth 😰

Tenniswife · 23/01/2017 21:33

I think you guys are right, as convincing as she is, I'm still not 100% on whether it happened.

Butterfly3232 · 23/01/2017 21:35

My daughter is April born and she says she did hopping/skipping and reading a book. She hasn't gone into any detail at all about questions etc
She did tell me she was in a big group first and then with one other girl only!

Mummywow · 23/01/2017 22:37

Nothing more any of us can do now. Good luck all! X

Dearesttwo · 24/01/2017 11:45

results from Orley Farm are out in the post today

Homely1 · 24/01/2017 12:39

Good luck to those who did Orley Farm!

holepunchkid · 24/01/2017 13:06

so jealous of you lot who are done
Habs 5+ doesn't start for two weeks

horsemadmom · 26/01/2017 10:20

To all the NLCS 4+ parents-
I'm going to answer your PMs here all at once because they had the same general theme-
Your DDs are 3 or 4 years old. Their memories are selective and clouded by Penguin bars and juice boxes. It doesn't matter what they told you and they certainly do not possess the subjective judgement to inform you of what parts of the assessment were important or definitive .
If you are worried that your DD 'made a mistake' or feel disappointed in your DD. Stop NOW! This process is clearly way too important to you and you are communicating this to your DD. Nobody 'fails' the 4+. If your DD doesn't get a place, she did not 'fail'. She was either not suited to the school or not ready. This is not about YOU either. Tutoring makes zero difference. Your expectations make zero difference. If you give your DD the message that they failed, you will be storing up an expectation your DD can't meet and crushing her self esteem. And what will you do if she gets a place? Will you analyse ever spelling test? Grill her every day about what she could have done better? Constantly question her teachers about whether she is top of the form in every subject? You will not endear yourself to the school. You'll just look insane and the teachers will be stuck clearing up the mess you have made of your DD's self worth.
Just tell her at the end of the process where she IS going and not where she isn't. Rant over!

2LoveleyDD · 26/01/2017 10:25

hello all , Does anyone know if NLCS and HABS send emails first of the result ( yes or no) and then follow it with the letter or is it always only via post? As the second round notification came via email so wondering if the final offer is also like that?

holepunchkid · 26/01/2017 10:39

final offers by post. you're looking for an envelope at least A5 size - normal letter size isn't a good sign.

LilaGrace · 26/01/2017 11:14

Thank you horsemadmom- was hoping you'd appear on this thread at some point 😄

I think all schools send out letters with the final result- whether it's yes or no. They send them on Monday 30 January to arrive on Tuesday 31 January. Some then send an email by the end of the day on Tuesday so that those with slow post aren't disadvantaged. South Hampstead told me we could call them if we didn't receive a letter on 31 Jan.

shopgal9 · 26/01/2017 12:06

Thank you horesemadmom you are right :)
Lilagrace thanks for the info, so don't want an A4 envelope :(

2LoveleyDD · 26/01/2017 12:13

thank you, both.
Yes wouldn't want an A4 :(

LilaGrace · 26/01/2017 12:14

No- A4 would be good. A5 would be good. Smaller than that wouldn't.....

shopgal9 · 26/01/2017 12:22

Oops sorry for getting confused Confused

Homely1 · 26/01/2017 16:25

Thank you horsemadmom!

Do you know if they count round 1 and 2 and the school report?

Preschooler55 · 26/01/2017 16:45

Hello all, hoping someone can help!! We've done the rounds for St. Albans, Habs and NLCS. does anyone know which of these schools ask for references from the preschool?!

holepunchkid · 26/01/2017 18:53

I'd imagine all of them. Unusual not to ask.

Dearesttwo · 26/01/2017 23:29

Habs does not ask for a reference from preschool at 4+ or so it states in their letter they sent out with the assessment date.

Homely1 · 27/01/2017 04:47

Do you think that schools consider it in their final decision or just look if borderline as too overactive to read each and every one.
