3+ 4+ 5+ 7+ support thread 2017

In previous years I have started these threads to help and support all those parents involved in the independent school admissions process.

I wasn't going to start one this year as I know I would not be able to check back on it as regularly as I would like, which then defeats the purpose of the thread.

However, after numerous positive PM's about the threads I think it would be a shame not to start one where at least the hand holding can continue. Flowers

There are many many people who have been through the process and 'live to tell the tale' . There are also other tutors I know who read this thread and it would be great if you all could help and support and share your ideas.

Yes, mail. I suggest to give them a call if mail takes a week to get to you.

mumteacher · 19/01/2017 18:51

Absolutely, please call the school and request results over the phone or email if you haven't yet heard.

How did NLCS round 2 go for everyone? What came up for your daughters (all over now hence asking)?

shopgal9 · 21/01/2017 00:00

We were called to nlcs for round 2 Dd was asked to describe a picture and was asked to do some physical exercises like hopping and skipping, she didn't tell me anything else, anyone else went for nlcs ?

LilaGrace · 21/01/2017 05:59

NLCS round 2- DD said she had to describe a picture too, did hopping and skipping, wrote her name. Sang some nursery rhymes.

Homely1 · 21/01/2017 13:29

Could anyone help? If DD has made some errors/could not complete a task in NLCS round 2, is that game over?

LilaGrace · 21/01/2017 13:59

Homely- I don't think we can answer that! They will look at everything she did and her overall performance, and compare all the girls and take the 40 they deem most suitable for the places. I'm sure they all make some errors. What did she do wrong (bearing in mind they aren't always very accurate when recounting what they did)?

Homely1 · 21/01/2017 14:10

Just silly errors :-(. And there was something that she said she could not do but tried. I've heard other girls say they did it no problem. :-(

shopgal9 · 21/01/2017 14:43

Ohhh Homely1 don't stress yourself my DD has been telling things she did in the assessment and trust me every 10 mins later she added a new task to the list hopefully they'll look at her overall performance n not just that one thing Smile

LilaGrace · 21/01/2017 14:50

Don't worry- it's out of our hands now xx Wine

Infopls · 21/01/2017 15:13

Does anyone have any info on St Paul's (Colet court) 7+ papers? DS found Maths, Story and Comp ok but did not finish both VR and NVR papers fully. What does this mean,,,,,should we assume game is over?
They said they will be posting the interview letters today.....should we expect to receive the posts Monday/Tues?

Infopls · 21/01/2017 15:31

UCS HM Mr Hayward made calls yesterday to all parents who have kids in UCS JB/SB currently and have siblings who have appeared for 7+ this year. He gave them results over the phone. Website says they will post results on 27th Jan. Seems like they have a strong SIBLING Policy which we were unaware of!

Butterfly3232 · 21/01/2017 16:36

Homely1 - I remember them saying at the open morning that the second stage is about looking at the girls readiness to learn. Based on this I would hope that they would not be looking at it so objectively and would look at the girls attitude, engagement with activity, interaction etc.

Swift16 · 21/01/2017 16:50

Hi infopls, interesting about ucs although publically they stated they do not have preferential sibling policy, at least not when it comes to exam results (rather than reporting). My suspicion is that sibling differentiation may have impact only in borderline cases but not enough to push someone "few points over the line"

Not sure specifically re st pauls but i woild also venture a guess that all the parts of the test are graded "on the curve": if the entire exam year struggles with a particular portion the required score is lower whilst if almost everyone cracks 100% a touch lower may be a failing score.. so would think its impossible to judge. In general the only thing that we heard consistently is that its better to hit 80% in everything than 100% in dome parts and 50% in others

Homely1 · 21/01/2017 17:30

Thank you so much. Just with a school like NLCS, you'd imagine that they'd favour a child getting everything right

Tenniswife · 23/01/2017 20:22

Hi all,

We went for round 2 at nlc last week, and my daughter didn't do any physical activity. She said they just sat at a table and did some work. This being sequencing, making shapes and counting.

Do you think they had different activities for different age groups? A little unfair also as my daughter loves doing physical activities and could have shown her potential there. Though no one in her group did it either...

Homely1 · 23/01/2017 20:38

It's so hard isn't it tenniswife.... I am absolutely agonising and as time goes on, I feel it's not good. I am hearing different things too but forvsame group too and I feel the same ie if she did x, she would have shown more potential than y. I thought they all did physical stuff though. I was hoping that my daughter is not telling me the truth the some things but she is being consistent...:-(

Did yours chat a lot?

How do they decide on final cohort?

Mummywow · 23/01/2017 20:54

My daughter told me v little about nlcs round 2 - just hopping and skipping (not her strength so worried about this - could it be a deal breaker?) and she said she was by herself with a teacher. She came out happy though but was the last one out.

LilaGrace · 23/01/2017 20:58

My DD said they did hopping and skipping first, then had one on one time with teacher. She was asked to look at a picture and talk about it, and copy some letters. I don't think any one thing going wrong would be a deal breaker. It's more about the overall picture they form of each girl based on many factors.

Tenniswife · 23/01/2017 21:02

Yes, my daughter is very chatty and told everyone what she did in detail. If she couldn't do something she told me. It did sound like it went well for her. Just worried there's been a mistake somewhere.
On various styles of probing, she consistently says she didn't do anything physical. Don't know what to think of it all. I guess it's out of our hands...

Really not sure on how they decide, but I'm going with the assumption that if she fits in, then she's in.

LilaGrace · 23/01/2017 21:04

Tennis- I think that's right- if they like her overall then she's in. Where else has she sat for?

Butterfly3232 · 23/01/2017 21:08

Tenniswife I agree with you totally!
