3+ 4+ 5+ 7+ support thread 2017

In previous years I have started these threads to help and support all those parents involved in the independent school admissions process.

I wasn't going to start one this year as I know I would not be able to check back on it as regularly as I would like, which then defeats the purpose of the thread.

However, after numerous positive PM's about the threads I think it would be a shame not to start one where at least the hand holding can continue. Flowers

There are many many people who have been through the process and 'live to tell the tale' . There are also other tutors I know who read this thread and it would be great if you all could help and support and share your ideas.

Turned our our nursery reference must have been ok. 4+ offer from JAGS just arrived. DH was so happy he burst into tears. Lol. Thanks for the thread everyone.

I have to move house into the Barnes/Putney/Fulham area this summer. My daughter would be 3+ in September but obviously we missed the boat. Which schools are still worth applying for [3+ or 4+] and where is best to keep the daughter for better prep. Are there nursery more focussed on 4+ than others?
Do you know if any schools would still consider candidates at this stage for 3+?

Mary21 · 05/02/2017 18:38

For 3+ it might be worth contacting Falcon school for girls. 4+ Putney high is competitive entry so worth contacting now. Hurlingham is 1st come 1st served so maybe full but maybe ok. Give them a call. Sorry don't know the nurseries. Oh there is also Harrodian

Mrs2013 · 06/02/2017 21:20

Thanks Mary21!

Bluestarrysky · 07/02/2017 17:15

Hi zombiedmummy my daughter has also received offer for jags . Are you already living around that area . Would be helpful to connect with you if that's alright .

Looking for clarity on 11 plus schools Vs 13 plus schools. DS is in a decent pre prep, bright, good in music fairly sporty. After preprep - there seems to be two options. One being prep schools that go up to 11+/13+ ( Shrewsbury House etc) and other being schools that go up to sixth form/ A levels ( KCS/ St Pauls/ Hampton). Option 1 feeds in to option 2 at 11+ and 13+ among other schools.. Naturally, option 2 is preferable, but also is very competitive option.

If choice 1 is exercised - question is how competitive is it to get in at 13+? ( in to choice 2 schools) Does it get harder that at 11+ or vice versa? Are we contesting for lesser seats than at 11+ ? or are the boys selected at 11+ and have offers but move to those school at 13+ ? ( definitely not the case for SHS as mentioned on their website). Thanks!

Hi mumlife. This thread is for 3, 4, 5 and 7 plus assessments. You might get more response by posting in secondary education or starting a. We thread about the schools you're interested in...

LilaGrace · 08/02/2017 10:17

Shopgal- have you heard about a place for your DD from the waiting list yet? Should be later today if not... good luck to you and anyone else waiting for places xx

shopgal9 · 08/02/2017 10:33

Hi lilagrace just heard from nlcs it's a no, they have filled their places 🙁 so will try again at 11+ again congratulations to every one who got it and thanks for your help n wishes x

LilaGrace · 08/02/2017 10:38

Oh no, that's a shame. I'm sorry 😢 What's your plan B?

shopgal9 · 08/02/2017 10:49

I know thanks Lilagrace :(, she'll continue to stay on the wait list till Sept for NLCS, in case a place becomes available, still waiting for St helens to come back....but not holding my breath....Plan B is she stays at her current nursery/prep school- St Hildas in Bushey and we try again at 11+.

LilaGrace · 08/02/2017 10:57

Did they tell you where on the waiting list she was? Obviously the higher up she is, he more chance of a place. St Hilda's is a great school though (but I totally understand your disappointment Sad) xx

shopgal9 · 08/02/2017 11:02

No they didn't, they said they haven't used the reserve list this year as all the places they offered have been taken, I did tell them, there were 3 possible places which weren't taken, she said yes but apparently they always overestimate a little and send offers, in this instance they had guessed right.... yes St Hildas is a good one too, she did say don't feel discouraged and do apply at 7 +.....

MrsMarigold · 08/02/2017 11:05

Oh shogal9 crossing my fingers for you. However, these things have a habit of working out for the best.

shopgal9 · 08/02/2017 11:08

Thanks MrsMarigold :) very kind of you, you are right now is not the time for DD to be there....

LilaGrace · 08/02/2017 11:33

Oh interesting- so none of the reserve list was used. Mrs Newman told me they over offered slightly- so maybe by 3-5 places. I know 2 people who turned down NLCS but hasn't made any difference due to over offers. As MrsMarigold said, things usually work out for the best xx

shopgal9 · 08/02/2017 11:35

Agreed LilaGrace

mickmills · 08/02/2017 12:15

It's an awfully long time to be in that NLCS environment, from 4 to 18.... in my opinion, if it's the right school, they will be successful at 7 or 11. I am an Old North Londoner, was there from 7 to 18, so speak from experience.

LilaGrace · 08/02/2017 12:27

Mick- did you enjoy it...?

mickmills · 08/02/2017 12:40

Yes, I had a good experience there, but it was a different school then (we are talking 30 years ago). I have not chosen to send my own children there.

FunnyBear · 09/02/2017 21:44

We live in South London. Our daughter is summer born approaching 4, and very happy in her current prep school nursery. We target Habs girls, Channing, NLCS or SHHS for our daughter at 7+. What proportion of children are accepted from non obvious feeder schools. Is there a path we could follow?

PrepSchoolMum2017 · 09/02/2017 22:06

Funnybear I wouldn't get hung up on feeder schools. My DD goes to a tiny pre-school that no prep school will have ever heard of. She's just been through 4+ & got offers from every school (inc NLCS). At assessment they're simply looking for bright, curious girls. I had worried about the feeder school thing while we were going through the process but I honestly don't think it matters. If she's bright & you encourage her to be inquisitive & interested in things, she'll do just fine!

FunnyBear · 10/02/2017 23:03

@PrepSchoolMum2017
Thanks, that's reassuring. Congratulations. Inspirational parenting & pre-school teaching. That is magic.

mumofthreegoingmad · 12/02/2017 23:21

Well done everyone and am sure your littlemail ones will blossom and be happy wherever they go!
I have 2 at nlcs and 1 a t habs and about half the girls in the class at nlcs are getting tutored even though they are in the school.

LilaGrace · 13/02/2017 04:14

Hi mumofthree. I've heard of many girls st NLCS being tutored throughout the school. Do you mind if I ask how old your girls are, and what age the tutoring started? My DD is starting in reception at NLCS in September. Would you say the tutoring was as prevalent at Habs, or not so much?
