September 2016 school starters

Wondered if anyone else out there fancies a school starters thread for this September?

I'm feeling slightly pathetic about DTs starting Reception in September; they've been in nursery for years but I'm still prone to a little weep at my babies growing up when I peek at their uniforms!

OP posts:

I dropped him off but now the house feels empty.

catkind · 06/09/2016 18:51

Gosh bigfam, I hope you weren't relying on school for childcare! Did they only just tell you the arrangements?

Bigfam · 06/09/2016 19:12

Luckily I wasn't (I'm a sahp looking after our 19month old & expecting our 5th baby in december, whilst dp works) I only found out this morning but it was probably mentioned on one of the visits to the school we attended when she was still at nursery (I expect it went in one ear and out the other for me Blush)

drspouse · 06/09/2016 21:10

Oh dear, Big, that's a bit rubbish!

I am supposed to be sewing up the hems of another pair of trousers. I think he can wear his shorts tomorrow again. Generally he's been OK but quite a lot of behaviour tonight...
I seem to have a new school mood on me too. I've been getting stuff sorted for an NCT sale and planning a major clear out and refurb of the attic. DH says we may as well get the other carpets done, they are disgusting. I'm spending my childcare savings several times over!

drspouse · 07/09/2016 09:48

I think I'm going to get away without doing the trousers till Monday. He's worn his shorts again today, he has PE tomorrow so that will be PE shorts or joggers, and it's own bottoms every Friday so he can wear one of his many colourful pairs of trousers.
Phew!

Any tried and tested tips for getting information out of your DC?

DD has now started but all I got yesterday is "I've forgotten everything we did" and "I don't remember"...

catkind · 07/09/2016 11:40

I found, "aaah, you sat staring at the wall all morning again" would often elicit a bit more info from DS. Or "did you meet any elephants today"? You can tell when they've had PE because all their clothes are on backwards.

Idliketobeabutterfly · 07/09/2016 11:57

lol my DS was so exhausted that he wouldn't get up this morning. had to try twice and even then i had to carry him down the stars

Pengweng · 07/09/2016 12:23

DTs went off this morning without a backward glance! DH didn't even get a hug from one of them haha. They are fine and we are taking advantage of the quiet to repaint our kitchen. We are so rock n roll Grin

Idliketobeabutterfly · 07/09/2016 13:03

Glad it went well Pengweng. Yep, rock and roll here too as i can do housework now DH and DS or out of the house

Bigfam · 07/09/2016 13:22

Waiting for dd2's teachers to come for the home visit then it's 7 days and counting until she's off to school Grin
She's currently teaching dd3 to pick at the carpet, I'm sure she's trying to tutor her to follow in her footsteps & be a nightmare Hmm no reprieve for me! When she does start it'll be just dd3 and I (for 3 months til baby arrives!) Hopefully in that time with only one around we can get on with the girls bedroom and make sure everything is on track for christmas. The kids already know we'll be putting the tree up on the 1st as baby is due the 9th and doubt I'll have the time (or hands!) to do it after she arrives Grin

catkind · 07/09/2016 13:35

First day done and dusted here, Dd seems to have had fun, I was more nervous than her I think!
We have a home visit tomorrow. Hope yours went well bigfam. What did they do? I'm not sure whether need to suggest something for DD to show them, or just leave them and her to it and see what ensues.

Bigfam · 07/09/2016 13:43

We're still waiting catkind I'm actually getting nervous about what dd2 is actually going to do/say Blush I 100% know she's going to show off in some way! Good luck for yours too Smile

Idliketobeabutterfly · 07/09/2016 14:11

we had a home visit last year for nursery and to be honest they are really fast and just to get the child comfortable. Lol I think all the children show off on them.

Bigfam · 07/09/2016 15:00

We had a visit with the same teachers this time two years ago when ds started reception (weird sense of deja vu, was pregnant with a girl that time around as well!) But ds couldn't speak very well then, he was discharged from SALT at then end of term last year though. Dd2 is a lot more confident than he was, she asked why one teacher had short hair and the other long, then told "the long haired teacher" "it doesn't look nice" Blush

catkind · 07/09/2016 15:24

Oops. Bet they had a giggle though.

drspouse · 07/09/2016 20:54

Everyone says you will never get anything out of them about school, ever, till they are 18...
First session at after school club, I went with him for about an hour, at least 8 from their class (double intake) have already been every day and were old hands so I didn't feel quite so cruel.
He must have been exhausted because DD was messing about and turned the light on at about 7.45 and he didn't wake up even when I didn't realise he was asleep and said "DS did you turn the light on" really loudly.

TooTweeOrNotTooTwee · 07/09/2016 21:57

Poor DD broke down in tears on the way home today, and when I asked what was wrong she said she couldn't remember what she had for lunch Sad. I hadn't even asked her! Poor thing was exhausted... August birthday, hope we did the right thing not to defer...

SpaghettiMeatballs · 07/09/2016 22:10

TooTwee if it helps my DD is 5 in a few weeks and she had bags around her eyes when I collected her and fell asleep on the sofa watching TV. I think it's just what starting school does to them rather your DD's age per say.

Idliketobeabutterfly · 08/09/2016 07:55

Lol v. Early September birthday here and he's really tired.

beanhunter · 08/09/2016 10:14

Mine had 2.5 hrs yesterday. Tears on drop off but apparently settled quickly and said it was fun. She was completely bouncing and had loads of energy but did sleep well.
Today she's got 3.25 hrs and then it stays like that for the whole of next week and then she gets 4.5 hrs for 4 days and then finally full days.
Taking her to soft play to run it off this afternoon!

tired dd, shes been waking an hour early last few days. june birthday.
unfortunately visiting cousins last week caused her behaviour to deteriorate. DN was slapping her so dd was slapping back and for some reason this then started spitting
Sad, and the spitting has continued when she is told no or told off. so annoying, not the best time for this to start. school is going to be a nightmare as she copies any bad behaviour.

catkind · 08/09/2016 16:02

Aw tired kiddies. DD says she is exhausted, but I'm suspecting it may be an excuse to watch DVDs as she's still happily bouncing around when the TV is off!

Teachers visited and DD duly declared various things to be her favourites that she has hardly looked at before (new library book for eg). Eh well, guess they'll get to see what she actually goes for in the classroom. She also tried her best to convince them she's having packed lunches. She's not! Not without giving school dinners a good try anyway.
