September 2016 school starters

Wondered if anyone else out there fancies a school starters thread for this September?

I'm feeling slightly pathetic about DTs starting Reception in September; they've been in nursery for years but I'm still prone to a little weep at my babies growing up when I peek at their uniforms!

Thanks catkind. Looking like DS should be okay to go back to nursery next week now, so we'll send him in with a cake/chocolates.

Been washing/labelling school clothes - his trousers are size 3-4 years, and still too long! Didn't think he was that small - that age fits fine for normal clothes.

Checking in!

My DC1 (DS) is also starting school but he is such a tall lad he looks like he will fit straight into Y2!

He is a December born and he has had 5 terms at the school nursery. Reception is literally next door, separated by a corridor and he has been well and truly ready since Easter.

My biggest shock has been school uniform. He has already trashed 10 pairs of jeans by skidding along the floor on his knees. Bets are on at home as to how long his school trousers will last although I have bought him shorts for the time being!

Village school; everyone knows everyone unfortunately and there are only 3 new starters that didn't attend the school nursery so in a way for him, apart from a uniform, new classroom and a new teacher, oh and a longer day, there is little change.

Currently bedtime is 7:45-8pm. That will soon change! When he started afternoon nursery he was falling asleep at 4pm because he was used to having an afternoon nap. So I am expecting to come home from work to find him fast asleep in bed!

Bigfam · 27/08/2016 21:24

My dd2 gets really irritable after a full day at nursery and until she gets into the routine of reception I think we will have a few tantrums (usually when walking home, she's been known to have full on meltdowns then collapse on the sofa)
Hoping bed time wont be too bad as dd1 and ds are going in to year 3 & 2 and are quite sensible so with any luck she'll follow suit 😆

catkind · 27/08/2016 21:45

We currently getting about 930pm bedtimes from both. Really hoping that will change. DD also wants to keep all her clubs going (or after school versions of them). We'll see how she goes and be prepared to make drastic cuts if it's too much.

ShelaghTurner · 27/08/2016 21:58

My DD2 doesn't sleep until gone 10 most nights. It's going to be a nightmare trying to get her to sleep earlier 😩

drspouse · 27/08/2016 22:05

We've had good results when the clocks change by doing it 15 mins a day if that helps?

slightlyglitterbrained · 28/08/2016 00:21

This may be the silver lining of DS being ill - he's been conking out around 7.30/8pm as opposed to more like 9.30/10 ish. DP doesn't start work till 10am currently so school is going to mean all of us getting out of the door earlier so wasn't looking forward to trying to shift his sleep cycle backwards.

Currently planning on going in and staying for a bit of breakfast club with DS (parents are welcome to stay and eat breakfast apparently) until he settles in.

Bigfam · 28/08/2016 08:48

Hope he's on the mend soon slightlyglitterbrained
We have a home visit booked for the 7th of september where her teachers will come out, get to know her & gather any more info they need before she starts. They know her pretty well having taught ds and dd1 when they both started in reception. This will be our third child they'll have with another 2 to come! Grin

LucyLastik · 28/08/2016 09:09

Didiplanthis we had identical twin boys in reception one year in the same class. They had their first initial sewn onto the front of their shirts and jumpers which really helped us and their friends.

drspouse · 28/08/2016 09:30

Tried on school trousers again today. At least 2 inches taking up needed!

AnnoyedByAlfieBear · 28/08/2016 09:34

Hi, my ds is starting straight in with full days on the 5th. It's a smallish village school but he seems to be in a freakishly small cohort of only 16. SmileHe's a July baby and although he has been going to a nursery or preschool since he was 13 months, he still struggles socially. I think he's excited though.

AnnoyedByAlfieBear · 28/08/2016 09:46

I'm really struggling with trousers for ds too. Age 3-4 are massive on the waist and age 2-3 are way too short. School trousers seem to come up differently to regular trousers. Even the 2-3 are slightly big on the waist. Confused

catkind · 28/08/2016 10:04

Different school trousers come out very different too. M&S generally have adjustable waists which can help. Some shops do make a slim fit. We need to find ones with high waists for DS or he gets builders bum!

Bigfam · 28/08/2016 10:48

I only learned last year about the ingenous invention of elasticated waists on ds' school trousers half way through year 2 Blush he's incredibly skinny.

Dd2 has a bit of a pot belly so her little pleated skirt is aged 5-6 years Grin

catkind · 28/08/2016 17:31

DD's tall and thin, 6-7 skirts required for the length, she's another one that would look quite at home in year 2. Or she would, except she chopped all her hair off this year(!) and wants to grow it out again, so it's now in mini sticking out bunches and she looks like an over-sized 2 yr old Grin
One thing we're trying to practice for school is leaving hair clips in. She would always lose them at playgroup, I don't think school will approve of the nose length shaggy mane look. So she's under threat of hair cuts!

Bigfam · 28/08/2016 17:53

catkind did she cut it herself?
Dd2 managed to cut hers a fee months back & even ended up with bald patches. She had a proper mullet hairstyle going on Grin it seems to have evened out now but still can't decide whether to have it trimmed/tidied up before she starts. What do you think? (This is one of her better hair days, sometimes it's just a complete frizzy mess piled on top of her head)

What gorgeous curls! It doesn't look obvious to me. Yes, DD took the craft scissors to hers too. Must be some kind of rite of passage! It took a very short pixie to rescue DD's efforts, she was quite thorough. I think we're leaving further tidying till it can all be pony tailed, the growing out fringe stage is messy anyway.

Fedupoftheheat · 29/08/2016 07:20

My ds starts next week too. He's only just 4 and I'm worried for him. We've just moved back from overseas where he's been in kindy for 5 days a week 7.30-12.30 so long hours really. I just think he's so little still. I wish they didn't start school this young. I shall be a wreck next week!

ceeveebee · 29/08/2016 08:06

My DTs start next week. They left nursery last friday and I've taken a week off work so they get a break before starting (they're usually in nursery 8-6 X 3 days while I work). We've chosen to put them in separate classes but unfortunately all of the 7 children coming from their nursery are in DDs class; DS knows no one. There's already a Facebook group going and we've arranged a meet up later this week so hopefully he'll get to meet at least one other friendly face!
Dd is really looking forward to school though.

ElodieS · 30/08/2016 09:05

I know what you mean about party invitations etc plant, I’d like my girls to form some independent friendships but I’m dreading the angst of different invitations, not to mention the stress of getting them to different places!

Glad to hear your DS is feeling better glitter, good idea with breakfast club too!

My girls have a 7.30pm bed time, which can be a struggle in terms of getting everything done after work, but they’re usually shattered and fall asleep during a story (probably my very boring reading voice!) so we might have to bring it a bit earlier when school starts, I’ll see how they go.

Sorry if I’ve missed it bigfam, but how did your DS get on at the dentist? Your DD’s hair is gorgeous by the way!

Can I put out a cheeky plug of a charity we’re supporting? Great Ormond Street Hospital is running a Back to School Campaign, and I’ll be sharing DTs’ first day experience next week as part of it. It’s a brilliant cause and you can help support GOSH to get more children #BacktoSchool by texting SCHOOL to 70020 to give £3, or by donating online.

Wow, 7.30. I wish that would happen here elodies Her hair only looks nice the first day it is washed and brush, after that I'm fighting a losing battle 😆
They couldn't do anything with ds' tooth as the abscess was so big, they drained it (which was awful to watch 😦) and he's now on his second course of amoxicillin, since then it has grown in size again, not sure the antibiotics are working but he goes back saturday. If by some miracle it's not still swollen (looking unlikely) they will pull the tooth with local anasthetic (if he lets them! If not will have to wait weeks for a referral to hospital) thanks for asking.

TooTweeOrNotTooTwee · 30/08/2016 12:53

1 week to go till school start here.... DD is settling in at after school club today, and with her after school nanny tomorrow (ours is a complex patchwork of childcare arrangements). And then last day at nursery. She will miss her friends so much, although I know she will meet new ones.

I would love to aim for a 7.30pm bedtime from when school starts. Right now it's usually after 8pm but she is tired and I have to wake her up in the morning.

Such a time if change! Has anyone else's childcare become a patchwork as a result of school start? Nursery was easier I must say...

Idliketobeabutterfly · 30/08/2016 14:40

Just tried my DS' uniform on him and thankfully went well. With sensory issues he's quite fussy on what he will wear but hopefully he'll wear it. Seeing him in it makes me want to have a little sob though.

Didiplanthis · 31/08/2016 00:43

Tried on uniform this weekend - now trying to shrink polo shirts and socks in hot wash and tumble as rather overestimated summer growth ! Oh and sort of forgot about Dd uniform in excitement of little brothers starting so hers is too small !! I have ordered little button badges in their 'colour' ( coded since birth !) With an initial on in case the hair/jumper/trousers thing doesn't make them look different enough. Short of tattooing their names on their foreheads I can't do much more !!!

Idliketobeabutterfly · 31/08/2016 02:33

Lol that must be so confusing to the teachers.
