DD starts reception in Sept. Is very clear she doesn't want trousers. So have got:

3 x dresses
3 x polo shirts
2 x skirts
2 x jumpers
2 x cardigans
Lots of socks and tights
2 x pe shorts
2 x pe t shirts

It's the ironing I think of when buying uniform. So each dc gets at least 5 shirts/blouses, I do a white wash on Friday night and iron all the uniform for the week on a Sunday

LibrariesGaveUsPower · 23/07/2015 21:33

My DD wears summer dresses with tights some times - though cold summer days not winter.

I am Shock that any school prescribes cardies for girls and jumpers for boys.

Based on DD1, DD2 has:

  • 2 x pinafore
  • 2 x skirt (both came in two pack. She wanted a choice).
  • 6 x polo shirt
  • 3 x cardie (DD1 has 2, but in reception there was mud /glue/paint/lunch on it every day)
  • 5 pack tights. Ditto socks.
  • one set of pe kit.
LibrariesGaveUsPower · 23/07/2015 21:35

Oh and some hand me down summer dresses. Wouldn't have bought for September as may have grown by next summer. Smile

EugenesAxe · 23/07/2015 21:55

I don't iron personally. I may once a term and get the pleats nice and tight again.

For DS I coped with 4 polos, 4 jumpers or equivalent; I ended up buying enough trousers for the week. I would have at least 5 tights/ socks.

My DS' polos are light blue so are flexible - they can cope with going in the lights wash or the bright blues. Same for jumpers - royal blue but OK in the darks wash if I'm desperate and that's the next one to be ready. This way I usually clean the clothes for the 5th day during the week. Often you'll get another day out of a polo if jumper hasn't come off. Sometimes you get lucky with jumpers and lunch.

If that's the policy for PE I agree you should have a spare - I could easily forget to wash over the weekend. On the other hand I could easily say fuck 'em - they'll never know I haven't washed it....

Aaaargh. Thank you all but now I am so confused! Presumably specialist school uniform shops will have stuff year round if I need to buy more?

OP posts:
reni1 · 23/07/2015 22:08

Marks have the stuff all year round. Just the supermarket cheapies tend to sell out.

LibrariesGaveUsPower · 23/07/2015 22:10

Our asda and sainsbury have stuff all year. Summer dresses will be everywhere at easter.Smile

RoganJosh · 23/07/2015 22:12

I would think you could add a polo shirt, add a skirt and lose a jumper and PE kit.

tobysmum77 · 24/07/2015 06:27

You need as many cardies as polo shirts imo, they get utterly gross after a day.

redskybynight · 24/07/2015 07:42

You can order school uniform on-line all year (at places like M&S, BHS and the supermarkets) even if it's not in the shop.

passmethewineplease · 24/07/2015 07:54

I'd keep the other PE kit, DD has two. One gets brought home to wash every weekend so the spare goes with her that week and it alternates like that.

I agree on more polo shirts and socks/tights honestly I bought loads and still need more. I used to buy white socks but they got so filthy I switched to grey. Much better.

DD has two cardigans. Seems to be enough.

bingandflop · 24/07/2015 08:39

Eek I'm worried now. I've got

2 x summer dresses
3 x polo shirts
2 x skirts
3 x trousers
1 x cardigan
1 x jumper
5 x socks

I haven't gone with tights as I think late Spring born dd would struggle with these.

I do tend to do washing every day. Haven't even thought about PE kit argh!

redskybynight · 24/07/2015 08:43

bingandflop you might not need PE kit in Reception - not all schools do.

As for PP, I suspect you need fewer skirts/trousers and more polo shirts. Or go for a pinafore which protects the polo shirt more!! Of course this also depends on your school colours - if your polo shirts are dark blue/green they will probably last better than white ones!

TheFlyingFauxPas · 24/07/2015 08:51

More polos!

I bought ds 2 sweatshirts in reception then floundered about on day 3 when run out - clean one needed every day!

LibrariesGaveUsPower · 24/07/2015 08:52

Also depends if the polo shirts are logo ones. Expensive logo ones and I'd live with three. Cheap plain ones then 3 x 2 pack is the way to go!

TheRachel · 24/07/2015 09:05

Wow - I think you have too much stuff!

Dc3 starts rec in September. I have bought:
4 polo tops
2 skirts
1 dress
2 cardigans
1 pe shorts
1 pe top
1 pumps
Socks
Tights

My Ds (8) has:
4 polo tops
2 trousers
1 fleece
Pe items same as above

TheRachel · 24/07/2015 09:10

Does your dd prefer a jumper or cardigan? My dd1 wouldn't have worn a jumper, so I only bought cardigans. They are so quick to wash and dry that I can manage easily with 2. Same applies to skirts / dresses, so I don't think you need as many. My dc only have one set of PE kit and I only usually wash it every half term (they're only in it for a short time each week) unless it come home in between. You can easily buy more in the year if you need to.

bigkidsdidit · 24/07/2015 09:14

Oh god you've all got so much Confused I got ds five polos but only one jumper. Bugger. Also one pe kit, two trousers and one shorts. Eek.

mrsnoon · 24/07/2015 09:23

Aldi - 5 jumpers, 5 trousers, 6 polo shirts, 2 PE tops, 1 pair of shorts. £20.
Thank God for the school colour being navy blue. Going to wash it all on Friday but anything that can be worn again will be aired and put straight back in the cupboard.

TiedUpWithString · 24/07/2015 09:59

Thank you for this thread OP- I have nothing yet and am looking! DD's uniform is a bit random:

Maroon cardi or jumper in the sweatshirt style that leaves the inside all over the shirt underneath. Its got to ordered specially as its got a logo.

Blue polo shirts (I really want to find smart ones as i think polo shirts can look so naff compared to blouses/shirts)

Black dress, skirt or trousers (good tip about getting some trousers even if DD hates them)

White socks/tights.

I am having trouble finding slim fit stuff for DD.

Bunnyjo · 24/07/2015 10:19

redskyatnight makes a good point; if your school polo shirts are darker, you will get away with fewer.

Our school has red polo shirts and royal blue sweatshirts - to be honest, with my DC, the sweatshirts often end up more grubby than the polo shirts!

Bottoms wise, our school has a massive playfield than often ends up like a quagmire quite wet and, even with waterproof spares and wellies on, they do tend to end up looking like they have spent the day rolling around in the mud. Hence a daily change is necessary.

MilkRunningOutAgain · 24/07/2015 10:39

My DCs got muddy pe kits from the start of yr r and definitely needed more than 1 set, washed at least weekly. But by the looks of this thread this is unusual, school has huge playing field and uses it. Agree need more than 3 polos. Think you have too many jumpers / cardies but my DCs only tend to wear them if it's freezing, so always managed with 2 in ks1, now down to 1 at a time. Summer dresses and tights quite common here!

WearingPinkPyjamas · 24/07/2015 10:52

our polo shirts are white - they can have a logo or not. the three I have ordered have a logo so I am also going to buy an extra pack of cheap ones from asda for reserves and also a couple of winter dresses (hadn't thought of those but collared a parent with a kid in an older year who told me they wear those too). We're new to the area so I have only seen the kids and the school in summer so hadn't ever seen them in winter dresses or thought about those. I love a pinafore!

OP posts:
Cedar03 · 24/07/2015 11:19

My daughter has worn her summer dress with tights on cool days in the spring and the autumn.

I'd recommend investing in more pinafore style winter dresses as dirt doesn't show up as much on a dark coloured pinafore as on a light coloured polo shirt. (As they will throw everything down themselves - or that might just be my messy child!).

We had 4 jumpers/cardigans for my daughter in reception. This was useful because she had school dinners every day and apparently used her jumper/cardigan as a napkin. They rarely managed two days clean. I won't wash clothes every day and don't have a dryer so having 4 got us through this. If your child is having packed lunches they probably won't get quite so messy.

Our PE kits also come home every week (don't get washed every week by me though). We've lost one pair of shorts this year so having a second was useful. (They came in a pack of two anyway).

LibrariesGaveUsPower · 24/07/2015 11:55

Just bear in mind pinafores are tougher on pe days!
