Feeling more nervous than DS2!

He's 'borderline', particularly in Literacy. He'll be so happy if he gets a 4 (as will I!) so off he went just now with me offering my last minute bon mots ('Read carefully! Most of the answers are in the text! If it doesn't make sense, you've not read it properly' etc).

DD has had the same issues in the test again. The teacher has given her signs to rub stuff out and redo things. She also asked for clarification on a question (the venn diagram) and the teacher has told her that the question hasn't said that you can't put numbers in twice. DD thought this meant that he wanted her to put numbers in twice and so presumably has got the venn diagram wrong.

I really wish he would stop speaking to her in the tests. It is both distracting and confusing. Now I have had a dispute with DD because I have said she should do what she thinks is right and focus on what she can do on her own, and now she has stormed off upstairs.

I think I am just going to have to not talk to her about it anymore because it is just making things worse.

littlelegsmum · 16/05/2012 16:58

Seahouses. Sorry if you've already done this but have you not reported them yet . . I'm amazed it's so blatant Shock

littlelegsmum · 16/05/2012 17:00

Ripsishere . . I'd have a good read of the thread, it's on eye opener and schools that are using these readers on a 1-2-1 basis, for these children who do not get the same level of support in the classroom are actually cheating :(

SeaHouses · 16/05/2012 17:04

LLM, I don't feel that I can report them. If I went to the school to complain about the teacher, that would cause massive disruption to DD. We are in a small community and it would make my life difficult if I reported them as well.

EllenJaneisnotmyname · 16/05/2012 17:05

The Venn diagram question was also nasty. Instead of two intersecting circles there was one large one entirely enclosing another smaller one. One was multiples of 2, the other, multiples of 4. None of our children had ever seen a Venn diagram like that before.

ampere · 16/05/2012 17:07

DS had a small cry as I was 'explaining' how the 'quarter boys/8 girls' question worked- I asked him why he was crying, and he said 'Because William said 'FAIL' at me at the end of the test' (Wm is in the same Maths set as DS..).

God, is there a SATS in resilience??

Can I get a private tutor for 'Cutting retorts'?

DS is quite young for his age, by far the smallest boy in Y6 and it utterly wysiwyg. No guile whatsoever.

Anyway, he came good almost immediately and is currently devising his own word search... 'Muuum, how do you spell....?' etc.

Blush sorry.
Your DS sounds like a star ampere BTW.

bigTillyMint · 16/05/2012 17:09

Yes, we thought the venn diagram was nasty too.
And that piechart one.

KOKOagainandagain · 16/05/2012 17:10

ripsishere
There are rules governing access that make clear the requirements. Any child can ask for individual words or phrases to be read but a reader is for children that already receive reading support in the classroom on a day to day basis. Given that obtaining support is incredibly difficult it would be necessary for the child to be on Action/Action+ or statement and to have a reading age signficantly below that of their peers to have a reader in the classroom. It is not the absolute number of readers but whether or not the criteria are met that determines whether the school is cheating or not.

Merrylegs · 16/05/2012 17:12

Well DD said she blubbed her way through the whole test today. And yesterday in spellings - her tip top subject - she spelt 'suddenly' wrong. Even though she knows how to spell it! She is having a complete exam melt-down. Let's hope she gets it out of her system before GCSEs....

EllenJaneisnotmyname · 16/05/2012 17:14

We had 4 out of 60 with readers. One has a statement. The other 3 are on school action + with reading ages under 9. They also had extra time, as they all have large discrepancies with their non-verbal reasoning and verbal reasoning, over 30 points difference. The SENCo has applied for this and had it agreed.

KOKOagainandagain · 16/05/2012 17:20

Excellent Ellen - that is exactly how it is supposed to be..... but how can parents who use SATs results to make an informed choice tell which school is playing by the rules?

littlelegsmum · 16/05/2012 17:23

I understand. It's horrible that this is going on and knowing you can't really do anything! :(

littlelegsmum · 16/05/2012 17:25

Ellen. Now that is one question my dd got right on a previous paper. Just hope she remembered!

VivaLeBeaver · 16/05/2012 17:49

DD says she had to put one figure in both parts of the Ven diagram as its in the 2x and 4x tables. Does that sound right? I think she said it was 12.

Blu · 16/05/2012 17:52

Sad for Merrylegs dd.
It sounds as if she is very anxious about it all.
I hope she gets through tomorrow OK.

HauntedLittleLunatic · 16/05/2012 17:56

One of my Dds has been given a reader at the last minute. She did have some extra support earlier in the term - but with her maths not literacy and is top set so I think the support was targetted at borderline level 3/4 pupils to try and secure the 4 rather than the 4.

She has suffered a recent bereavement and has been noticeably unfocussed since which I would agree with and I think this has contributed towards the reader. I don't know if this an above board reason or not but it seems to have frustrated her immensley as 'i don't need someone to read the questions, I can read them myself and she won't let me answer until she has finished reading it'...which I think is the point....

SeaHouses · 16/05/2012 17:57

Viva, DD put 12 in both parts of the venn diagram. I would think that was the wrong answer, but I haven't seen the paper.

SeaHouses · 16/05/2012 17:58

And it may be that the venn question was worth more than one mark, and they may get a mark for putting the other numbers correctly.

littlelegsmum · 16/05/2012 18:00

Haunted. I'm sure that's classed as a valid reason for having a last minute reader.

(((hugs))) to her :(

DiaryOfASingleMum · 16/05/2012 18:05

@ ChickensHaveNoLips: Aren't the level six tests next week Monday and Tuesday, or do I have that wrong?

ps: Gr8 name btw:)

HauntedLittleLunatic · 16/05/2012 18:10

But her twin didn't get a reader although to be fair it appears to have had less impact on her school-work.

I think dtd2 is frustrated as she doesn't need a reader to read the question but I would agree that helping her maintain focus (if a reader contributes towards that) is useful.

littlelegsmum · 16/05/2012 18:16

((( hugs))) to her twin too :(

seeker · 16/05/2012 18:18

Ell, ds reckons there were 24 in the class, and it was 300g and 20% in the birdseed one. And "even George" said that was right. George is super bright!

Feenie · 16/05/2012 18:25

No, it's not a valid reason.

But (((((hugs))))) to her. Sad
