What could have happened to DS's bag? And hats?

DS started a new school this week and in five days, has managed to misplace three hats, a pair of gloves and his school bag. He's only 5, so they are watched quite closely, and he says he hangs things on his peg and then when he comes back from lunch or whatever, they are gone. His new teacher is searching high and low for them with no success, particularly his bag which is quite distinctive. Where could they have gone? Suggestions or ideas of what to do next welcome.

I think one problem is that in all the joy of getting out of the door in morning one doesn't realistically check the name tape of each fleeece or coat to make sure that DC hasn't come home with someone elses' in addition to his own. I help smooth this by chain-stitching his name in red silk onto the front of his gym fleece and wooly hat, and machining giant name tapes on to the front of school bags. Helps immeasurably.

I find it easier to put a distinctive row of stitches on the outside of DD1s school cardigans as well as several nametapes inside. I can easily spot if someone's wearing it who shouldn't be.
She lost two cardigans before I did this, since then none at all.
But if someone's sitting on them at home, no chance.

{The state that her blouses end up in they'd have to be desperate to want them...:)}
