Teachers wearing Ugg/simlar boots at school?

And yes I can't beleive that I think it's too casual to the classroom. It seems wrong to me, I would not wear them to work (but then again I work from home!).

I am another irregular choice shoe wearing teacher.

Kellogg · 20/12/2011 23:21

Maybe irregular choice has become the new per una

Bunnyjo · 21/12/2011 08:40

Well, so long as my child is happy and thriving in school, I couldn't give a damn what the teachers are wearing! Though, I do hope that DD's teacher is dressed in the most dowdy clothes at parents evening as she is 23, a slip of a wee thing and absolutely gorgeous to boot and I am 33, not such a slim thing anymore after 2 children, surviving on 3hrs sleep a night and permanently covered in sick or snot... Usually both! far too glamorous for her own good Xmas Envy Xmas Grin Xmas Envy

Uggs sound fine. The one thing I hate is seeing teachers in high heels. I always imagine them accidentally treading on some poor infant's toes. Plus, they look like 'silly barbies' as the little boys say and in this instance I think the little boys are right - teaching ought involve common sense and comfort, not glamour. I would like to wear what my old teachers did, those navy fishermen's smocks and a pen round the neck! Can't imagine women teachers in the 1970s got up like they seem to have to be now.

mrz · 21/12/2011 11:35

I had some very glamorous teachers in the 70s ... all the boys lusted after them

mrz · 21/12/2011 11:35

and all the girls wanted to be them Xmas Envy

Theas18 · 21/12/2011 15:29

Why not? Dress appropriately for the age group you teach and the work you do surely- so uggs and leggings/skinny trousers for playground duty and small kids. "business dress" in 6th form if you expect the kids to wear suits, or jeans if at 6th form college.

redpanda13 · 21/12/2011 17:27

I had a very glamorous classics teacher in the early 80's.She had a sort of Ann Bancroft look . There were rumours she had once been an underwear model for catalogues. The longest legs I have ever seen. She wore stillettos and pencil skirts. Story is that she once crossed her legs in class and the split in her pencil skirt flashed a bit of suspender and a 12 year old boy came over all unnecessary!
Last year when my DD was in P1 (Scottish reception age group) a teacher stood on her hand at circle time. The heel tip left a nasty cut. Uggs would never have done that!

Henwelly · 21/12/2011 17:30

If its cold the teachers could change into the Uggs when they go out.

Children have a uniform and have to be suitably smart for school, I think teachers should also have to do this.

FizzyChristmasFairyDust · 21/12/2011 18:48

Uggs are not practical, you need steel toe cap boots for the moment when a child is tilting their chair and puts it down on your foot, oh the pain!

snowball3 · 21/12/2011 19:14

Well, OFSTED are already on the case so expect to see reception teachers in pin-stripe suits soon!

I got told off many years ago for wearing trousers, by a deputy head who was very old school and believed women should wear skirts or dresses.
So I wore a suit for the rest of the half term. Borrowed two from a male friend, very smart too.
A compromise was reached, she backed down and I wore smart trousers and the occasional frock. My friend got his suits back.

mrz · 21/12/2011 22:11

As a student I remember being told off for being too smart. The head said it intimidated parents.

Dustinthewind · 21/12/2011 22:20

Grin Now that I can believe, Mid eighties? Less affluent area?
I was in trouble for talking too posh at my third school, no Standard English here if you please.
My shoes usually passed muster though.

Feenie · 21/12/2011 22:39
Grin

Too posh here as a student aswell. Smile

acsec · 21/12/2011 23:03

I saw this title and thought "Hahaha this is about me, I have recently started wearing a pair of Uggs to school." As a reception teacher I spend alot of time outside, I have really bad circulation and when my feet get cold they don't warm up - Uggs have been fantastic! The children really like them too. Not really fussed about what the parents think of how I dress, I wear combats and hoodies most days, sometimes a dress/skirt with leggings. By the end of the day I have snot, paint, whiteboard marker, PVA glue, mud, cornflour, playdough on me. I always think the grubbier the children and I are, the better the day we've had!

Kellogg · 22/12/2011 09:33

I think it must be very different for primary teachers, I can't imagine ever turning up for school in combats or a hoodie. Even our art teachers come into school very smart.

I have taught in some very deprived schools and have always looked smart, I don't think it intimidates anyone , it says that you can be bothered to make the effort .

goingmadinthecountry · 22/12/2011 10:43

I often wear Converse in reception (I do supply but only at a couple of schools) so I don't tread on children and can still run around at the end of the day. I do hope it doesn't upset the parents too much. I dressed very differently when I worked in secondary schools.

Just came back from NY where sparkly Uggs were everywhere - perhaps OP would be happier if teachers wore those?

mrz · 22/12/2011 11:34

It must only be my children who have scruffy teachers in secondary

Kellogg · 22/12/2011 18:28

I work with a few scruffy teachers and of course they exist. They are not the norm and it is commented on

mrz · 22/12/2011 18:46

definitely the scruffy out number the smart at both my children's secondary schools one or two smelly too

skybluepearl · 22/12/2011 23:34

does it really matter what food wear they are wearing as long as they do a good job?

Kellogg · 22/12/2011 23:40

I think it does matter.

goingmadinthecountry · 23/12/2011 01:25

It never occurred to me before, but now I think of it, dd3's y1 teacher wore Uggs. I shall definitely complain. Of, course, she did teach them to read, work as a team, learn a few times tables, she organised science week, eco club, theatre trips ......... Just think how well she could have done in sensible court shoes.

ravenAK · 23/12/2011 01:56

These are my winter boots (secondary English).

Another Irregular Choice fan, but I keep my gorgeous Miaow boots for nights out...the heels are too high for the classroom!
