And yes I can't beleive that I think it's too casual to the classroom. It seems wrong to me, I would not wear them to work (but then again I work from home!).

Half the teachers at our all girls secondary had the same M&S dress or skirt. They used to go in there together to find something 'appropriate' as basicaslly they didn't give a shoot what they wore, they were far too clever/nice/interested in their subject to bother. But I think they had been told to wear something formal.

It was hilarious. All that polyester. Nothing's changed re M&S has it. This was 1986.

etJeviensEntretesReindeers · 20/12/2011 16:20

and I mean I SAW them flocking in there in little groups and pairs.

'Oh this is where we're meant to get something is it? Look at that, that's shocking. Oh I suppose this will do Yes? Right. Let's get out of here'.

Looking back I love them to bits for it

MagicMountain · 20/12/2011 16:23

They can wear what they like. Why would it matter?

Dustinthewind · 20/12/2011 17:04

Our school is a symphony to Per Una, suitably boring for you, ladies?
Low heeled shoes and nothing individual or interesting for staff, lest we effect a mass attack of the vapours amongst the parents.
I wear my hippy stuff and bells and studs out of uniform.
Or my combat gear and Doc Martins.
Or my designer wardrobe and emeralds.

Lordy, you lot do fret about the strangest things. I'd be more worried about the quality of the contents than the wrapping.

I'm a primary school teacher and haven't yet worn my Ugg type boots into school, but I might as I'm pregnant and comfort is becoming more important.

I err on the side of feeling too scruffy in them, but some of the younger teachers war Uggs, leggings and little tunics abs they look fab Envy It's all in what you wear with the Uggs and the general grooming, I think.

Agree that the obsession with teachers clothes is weird though. And yes, anyone who is moaning about it should try doing a playground duty in 2 degrees.

Kardashianw · 20/12/2011 17:36

I wore my uggs when I did TP far too cold when it came down to playground duty!!! I was dressed smart an thought my uggs finished my outfit off :) dont think there is anything wrong with it at all!! I did have my "shoes" in class as they were uncomfy when I'd be sitting on the carpet or floor!

Collision · 20/12/2011 17:40

There was a big hoo-haa at our school this year with regards to leggings.

Leggings worn as tights I think are perfectly acceptable however, leggings worn as trousers are not.

Anyway they got banned.

Then a new teacher joined and started wearing crocs! White crocs!! Just wrong but so far nothing has been said.

Uggs is fine as far as I know for our school.

Well OTOH the kids get judged massively on their appearance so maybe that's why people get annoyed when teachers appear to be breaking their own rules, a bit.

I wouldn't care a jot if it worked both ways. And I actually don't care a jot what teachers wear. Not a jot. I just wish they would afford the kids the same respect for their intelligence/individuality/common sense when it came to uniform.

mrz · 20/12/2011 17:50

Teachers personally don't care a jot what children wear either but if the school has rules they have to uphold them whether it is a rule about uniform or about their own appearance.

EvilTwins · 20/12/2011 17:51

I wear these for school, and sometimes these

Secondary though. The teenage girls look at me like this Xmas Envy

Dustinthewind · 20/12/2011 17:52

I'd wear lovely gear, business suits and posh shoes. I would, honestly.
Except for the glue and the dirt and the dust and the kneeling and bending, the snot and vomit and cleaning up and the general wear and tear.
It does my Jimmy Choos and (insert Top Designer name) no good whatsoever.
I'd have to sit at a desk and make pupils keep their distance with a barge pole or something similar.

yousankmybattleship · 20/12/2011 17:54

Uggs are hideous things so on those grounds I would be offended, but otherwise I couldn't care less what my children's teachers wear on thier feet.

etJeviensEntretesReindeers · 20/12/2011 17:58

Oh Mrz. I know, I just wish sometimes that they would leave the kids alone about it.

It's such a waste of energy, as long as the kid is clothed, warm, fed and AT SCHOOL then really everything else should be immaterial. imo of course.

mrz · 20/12/2011 18:04

I'd be so happy if all our pupils came to school is warm clothes and had eaten a good breakfast before school.

Dotty342kids · 20/12/2011 18:05

Eviltwins, those shoes are gorgeous! Tell me though, are you an art / textiles teacher?!

EvilTwins · 20/12/2011 18:05

Drama. So I get away with it... Xmas Grin

tethersjinglebellend · 20/12/2011 18:07

Uggs may make me want to scratch out my own eyes just so I don't have to look at them, but I'm fairly sure that they don't stop children learning.

Although as a teacher, I would be delighted to be proved wrong.

thinkofthemoney · 20/12/2011 18:07

My GP wears them, nice to be comfy I think.

PurplePidjInAPearTree · 20/12/2011 18:08

I used to love my purple doc martens for playground duty - under wide legged trousers!

openerofjars · 20/12/2011 18:08

A manager at my college wanted to ban sandals on grounds of taste. I mean, really.

It was shouted down by the entire Birkenstock-wearing staff team.

Sandals, further education. What was she thinking?
