Teachers, do you notice "the summer slide" effect in September?

Following on from the doing stuff during the holidays thread I am interested to know from teachers if you have experienced this in children coming back to school after a long break? And in a particular subject? BTW DH is a Head and he thinks it definitely happens.

Any thoughts?

or it is evidence of what some secondary teachers are trying to contain within the classroom day to day and perhaps explains the increase in the number of assaults on teachers.

Considering that all the Brixton riots started in term time, I am not sure what we actually learn from this particular line of reasoning. Except that this is the generation that thinks it has invented rioting.

This post is pretty insignificant given that we've started to discuss the riots but, having read some of this thread earlier, I decided to do a little experiement tonight with my DS, about to go into Yr2.

In his class, they are given a set of 20 spellings at a time, in alpha order. He was at set M by the end of Yr1. I've tested him tonight. He managed to get all of sets A, B, C about half of D and about 5 out of 20 in set E. He then couldn't spell anything from set E onwards Shock. So, my little experiment seems to suggest he's forgotten how to spell 175 words that he knew how to spell 6 weeks ago Confused.

Am now regretting my lax approach to his learning over the summer and hoping that all the threads that say it comes back after a few weeks are right otherwise we have a lot of foundating re-building to tackle [embarrassed].

He's done well to remember sets A-C most children are unable to recall spellings they learnt for a spelling test by the next day ... which is why many schools don't do tests

Thanks mrz Smile

So, at roughly one week in for most, any new thoughts to add here?
