Cost of music lessons in private / state schools

Can anyone tell me how much they pay per term? Ds is hoping to take up a musical instrument next year Y2 and am concerned this is going to stretch us too much.

My daughter is learning the piano. We pay £10 for half an hour. This isn't through school....

that's do-able. I thought it might be £30.

DS has guitar lessons in a group of 4 at school. Think it is £62 this term (although diffferent charges for different terms I think). Although will stop being done through the council from September so not sure how much it will be then.

£36 a term in state primary, £155 a term in grammar gulp.

Depends on whether your child will be in a group lesson or a single, as others have pointed out. Most music teachers offer 20 and 30 mn options (20 mn is better for younger children anyway as concentration wanes when they're young).

The most important thing to remember is that the lesson is only for learning a new thing. The thing is acquired properly and remembered through practice at home, which is free. So you could do only one every fortnight as long as your DC is practising every day, and see how it goes.

Surrey Arts give the lessons in Surrey state schools. They offer different options depending on lesson length and size of the group. Most expensive is 30 mins individual, which is about £160 a term (for 10 lessons) which is comparable with the average cost of private lessons. Cheapest is a group of 6, which is about £44. There are various other options inbetween these two.

DD has flute lessons 50 pounds per term for group lessons, piano lessons outside school are 17 pounds for individual lesson (half hour).

Just entered dd for grade one exam, it cost £31..

ds2 did guitar in a group at primary, that was free.
At secondary his lessons cost £75/term for 10x 25min lessons. I think that's very reasonable. (Much cheaper than when he had private piano lessons, we don't have the hassle of transporting him to/fro and he's making good progress.)

I think it might be subsidised to some extent though, and with budgets being slashed there may be big price rises coming in areas like this.

Got exam fees on top of that as well.

This is beginning to sound like big amounts of money. One of ds godmothers plays 2 musical instruments really well and has taught. She's now living on the other side of the world . stanhousemuir can I ask what instrument your dc is learning? and if this is a private school?

£154 for 10 lessons 30 mins at state school, expensive and my son forgets to go sometimes. grrrrr

wow that's alot for a state school. This should be included in the curriculum ffs !

State - £196 per academic year (20minsx10 per term)
Private (1) - £155 per term (30mins x 12 per term)
Private (2) - £80 per lesson (30mins x 10 per term)

Personally it has been a real case you get what you pay for - Private 1 is by far the best.

£60 per term for weekly 30 mins lesson (though DD says it's never 30 mins and always considerably less). Violin at state.

The lessons are free at DS's school, but are limited to a choice of four instruments. We had to pay to hire the instrument for a year, which was £69 iirc, but otherwise no costs to us. Sounds like we've got a bargain!

For DS1 we paid £36/term for trombone lessons in state primary and secondary.

DS2 does piano privately and we currently pay £9.50/half an hour every week during term time.

Should have also said the £36/term included instrument hire. Though after a year we were encouraged to buy our son his own trombone through the school with a 25% discount. Bargain really.

DD1 has been doing trumpet since yr 3. There are a group of 3-4 brass players. She has a free instrument. Its costs £30/term which IMo is excellent value. She loves it and is just about to do Grd 1 in July :)

At my DC's state primary it costs £75 a year to have music lessons through the school. You also have the cost of the instrument, but you can hire one for about £20 a term. They are group lessons though and they don't progress that quickly. They offer violin or trumpet.

DS1 (and soon also DS2) has private piano lessons, which cost £10 for a half hour lesson. Books, exam fees etc are on top of that, plus of course you have to have a piano!
