Can anyone tell me how much they pay per term? Ds is hoping to take up a musical instrument next year Y2 and am concerned this is going to stretch us too much.

OP - your DC should still be able to play in school groups/orchestras even if they learn out of school. Of course your DC would have to make the music teacher aware that they played an instrument, so s(he) would know to include them. At primary level, my DC were also encouraged to bring their instrument to normal school music lessons.

£110 per term (meant to be 10 lessons of 20 minutes, but they often get more). State school.
My niece and nephew go to a private school and their lessons are twice the price!

Learning a music instrument is definitely not cheap! Schemes such as those mentioned by the PP sound great - it is very noticeable at DC's school that only the DC from well off middle class families learn instruments.

Hello... if you are in London and your child happens to attend one of the schools currently taught by London Music Masters, music tuition is 'free' (to all families) for year 2 and year 1. That is a 30 min paired lesson, and 2 X 30 min group lessons per week. From year 3- families pay- but the rates are reasonable and heavily discounted to ensure all children have access. (and include orchestra). It is an amazing charity scheme and one which gives every child the opportunity to shine. They teach violin and cello. This is state school. Quality of teaching is excellent. Instruments provided.

Lessons at Primary school,
Piano, group for 20 minutes: 4 quid/lesson. About 8 lessons/term?
Group Violin, 10-20 mins: hire + lessons = 50-55quid/term (about 11 lessons).

State school we pay £40 per term for guitar lessons and DS1 shares his lesson with another pupil although he has said from September he will have the lesson to himself.

We also pay for him to be privately tutored which costs &10 for 30 mins.

£12 a lesson (meant to be half an hour but the teacher is lovely and usually it's 45 mins), privately. I had a piano teacher who charged £11 per half hour, it was usually 45 mins too, and she drove me home afterwards :) She also lent me loads of books and things. If you get a really involved teacher whose prices are reasonable like that, you're very lucky! A tip- get one who's keen on theory from the beginning. School teachers (IME) usually just focus on the fun stuff. I had lessons from 8 to 12 with the same teacher at school, and when I switched to a private teacher she was the first to introduce the concept of a treble clef to me.

Here, that's pretty cheap (in the North, not even in London). Private lessons are much better than school ones (at least if you're not naturally musical and need more individual help), even if the school ones are private- half an hour ones are too short, they always get interrupted by bells, you lose your break or a few minutes finding the room, you play on keyboards or out of tune pianos...generalisations, but private is usually better.

Thanks for all the info. One of the parents at school said that though the cost is high, they play their instrument 3 times a week in school and have the opportunity to play in groups/orchestra etc. Will probably consider going down that route as a local private lesson once a week wouldn't be able to provide that.

At my DC's state primary it costs £75 a year to have music lessons through the school. You also have the cost of the instrument, but you can hire one for about £20 a term. They are group lessons though and they don't progress that quickly. They offer violin or trumpet.

DS1 (and soon also DS2) has private piano lessons, which cost £10 for a half hour lesson. Books, exam fees etc are on top of that, plus of course you have to have a piano!

DD1 has been doing trumpet since yr 3. There are a group of 3-4 brass players. She has a free instrument. Its costs £30/term which IMo is excellent value. She loves it and is just about to do Grd 1 in July :)

Should have also said the £36/term included instrument hire. Though after a year we were encouraged to buy our son his own trombone through the school with a 25% discount. Bargain really.

For DS1 we paid £36/term for trombone lessons in state primary and secondary.

DS2 does piano privately and we currently pay £9.50/half an hour every week during term time.

The lessons are free at DS's school, but are limited to a choice of four instruments. We had to pay to hire the instrument for a year, which was £69 iirc, but otherwise no costs to us. Sounds like we've got a bargain!

£60 per term for weekly 30 mins lesson (though DD says it's never 30 mins and always considerably less). Violin at state.

Timetowaste · 21/05/2011 13:04

State - £196 per academic year (20minsx10 per term)
Private (1) - £155 per term (30mins x 12 per term)
Private (2) - £80 per lesson (30mins x 10 per term)

Personally it has been a real case you get what you pay for - Private 1 is by far the best.
