"enjoy your food", "talk to me" - imperatives, right?

Not according to dd's teacher - she keeps going on about "imperative verbs" to which group talk and enjoy apparently do not belong. I am german so just to make sure I got this is not a difference in the languages I'm unaware of - every verb can be put into the imperative mood yes? No such thing as imperative verbs? And how do I tell the teacher?

tinuviel could you share the title/author of your grammar book please?

First Language Lessons for the Well Trained Mind. There are 4 books in the series aimed at grades 1-4 in US system (years 2-5 here). We do have to watch the US spelling in it but the grammar is great! However, the grammar definitions and lists are revised/reintroduced in each book, so if you buy book 4, you will still have all the stuff you need!

I also use Better Sentence Structure Through Diagraming books 1 and 2 for the older ones. Diagramming a sentence really shows how it is put together (although book 2 gets very complicated!) Diagramming is introduced in grade 3 of First Language Lessons at a fairly basic level.

I use diagramming occasionally in German classes at school and it has helped to clarify things for some pupils, particularly subject and direct object.

God, first time I have read this thread, and my head was in my hands when the class teacher said 'enjoy is not a verb'. Jeez.

Thank you Tinuviel- I love it already just from its title!

I still dip into the (old) New First Aid in English Hmm

Ooh, I love mine - mainly for obscure collective nouns Smile
